Montreal. 3-1.
Buffalo will finish with more shots due to Montreal's below average defense, but Price will start the season strong and carry his team to the win. Jack Eichel will score the first goal of the game with a wicked wrister on an early first period powerplay, leading some to believe that Price will not live up to his previous seasons. Later in the same period, Artturi Lehkonen will score the first Habs goal on the rush with an assist from the rookie Charles Hudon. The game will remain locked at 1 throughout the second period, with Price revitalized by the early goal. Shortly after the halfway point of the third, Ryan O'Reilly will take an uncharacteristic penalty, leaving Buffalo's PK weakened with O'Reilly in the box and Jake McCabe still not returned from injury. Weber tees up a slapper from the point, but it goes wide, causing the speedy Jonathan Drouin to pounce on the loose puck, skate it behind the net, and feed it to whoever Montreal's net-front presence guy is for the slam dunk go-ahead goal. With 2 minutes left and Montreal leading 2-1, Robin Lehner is pulled for the extra man. Buffalo bombards Price with shots, but the best goalie in the world stands tall and stops every shot. Tomas Plekanec hops on a loose puck and dishes it to the speedy Paul Byron streaking down the ice, who then puts it into the empty net to seal Montreal's first win of the season.
Also, Lehner suffers a high ankle sprain skating back to the bench and will be out for 4-6 months.
