They'll only trade him if they know he's not going to re-sign.
But if they did trade - we can start with the closest comparison (in terms of value) from last years rental market = Kevin Shattenkirk. The trade was:

Kevin Shattenkirt
Minor League Goaly (25 years old / undrafted)

FOR

1st (2017)
2nd (2019)
2nd Round Prospect (22 years old / NHL 4th liner currently)
Borderline NHL Forward (28 years old / 4th Rounder Pick)

If the two non NHL players cancel each other out. Were left with:

Shattenkirk

FOR

1st
2nd
2nd

Tavares is more valuable & Montreal can't give up any of their impact players so I bet the Islanders ask for:

1st / Noah Juulsen
1st / Nikita Scherbak / Charles Hudon
2nd / Jacob De La Rose / Artturi Lehkonen

To be honest though none of these guys seem like studs (yet) so I bet they want the picks & are willing to throw in Kulemin + Chimera or some other depth players.

.....But then he probably signs with his hometown Leafs & Montreal ends up having to face Tavares for the next 7 years with a depleted prospect pool.

Tavares might be a good fit in Montreal as he upgrades the centre position, team has CAP room and team needs to try to win now while Price, Webber and Pacioretty are at their peaks.

Not sure what Montreal would need to send back to Islanders to make it happen but it is a possibilty.

Are you willing to give that up for a rental player?

That's basically four 1st round picks + for a rental !

And if you give up Galchenyuk then your offence will take a hit during the rental period & some of the benefit will be negated.

How does the game against Columbus have anything to do with JT?

Can't Montreal (or most teams) just wait a year and sign him as a UFA? Isles are trying to win too so they have no motivation to trade Tavares. By your logic that the Isles have to trade Tavares after their first game defeat, maybe the Crosby and Malkin are up for trade too.

Bergevin will never make a trade if resigning is not part of the process

Because the Isles as are most teams want to make a playoff run. Trading away your top player especially if your are in playoff rarely happens. Owners want paying customers, especially the Isles with an iffy fan base, Gee there has to at least 90 upcoming UFA this season. Do all 90 get traded.?

so ur saying to me that the isles will let a franchise center walk away, like its not a big deal. he would prob lose his the job the same day he lets Tavares walk away in free agency. if ur team does really bad, and he doesnt want to play there, u trade him for the best return. u dont let a franchise center walk in free agency. if matthews didn't want to play for the leafs 7 or 8 years from now, would u let him walk away in free agency? no u would trade him. u would be a complete ****** to let a franchise player walk in free agency

If Isles decide they can't re-sign Tavares, they will look for the best deal from probably 6-8 teams that would be serious bidders. Also, let's be realistic. Tavares can get $10M per year. So my guess would be Montreal would have to trade 2 1st round picks plus a top player or a third #1 pick. There aren't many choices - Pacioretty or Drouin, and one or both may have NYI as a place they won't agree to go to.

At the end of the day, are the Canadiens better off making such a trade? They might prefer to keep waiting until a top center UFA is available on July 1st, like Stamkos was a couple years ago.

Goat: Well you threw in the caveat that "if the Isles are doing bad" they would make the deal. Well I agree. But what happens if they are in playoff contention as I suggested. They certainly are less likely to make a deal for the reasons I suggested. And it always foolish talk when folks say teams "let a player walk". It's the definition of being a UFA. Teams don't let players walk, players have the right to walk.

Yeah, because MTL will get Tavares for free...

MTL would either have to get Tavares as a UFA, or they'll give up way too much for 1 player alone. I wouldn't go for Tavares unless it's a trade deadline offer that won't sabotage our future.
