Billus: IMO, Tavares would prefer to go to a contender (no cap room for the Leafs). If he prefers to play for a fringe NHL playoff team, I imagine he will resign with the Isles, not to to make the move to Montrealsmile

Poor John Tavares he's the only decent Centerman on the Habs the rest are Meh. And Montreal is hardly considered a contender.

Well, you said that but we finished first in our division last year, two years before that, three years ago. THIS without a #1 center! imagine what we could do with JT -> we would become a contender with JT.

we are far from a fringe NHL playoff team.

I welcome the thought of Montreal signing Tavares to a 7-year, $10.5M contract, as it (combined with the Weber and Price contracts) will take them out of contention for many, many years.

Montreal has won 1 playoff round in the past three years - yay!!

I agree that Tavares would make the team more competitive in the short-term, but those contracts (Weber, Price) will quickly become a drag and take the team out of contention for many years. Just look at the Blackhawks (who actually won Cups recently) - since they started paying Kane and Toews $10.5M each, they've won just 3 playoff games.

well, we didn't get the chance to sink for 5 year straight then draft a Mcdavid, a Laine, a Matthews, MArner, Nylander, Dubois... (might be because we have a shitty draft team)

Remember that the Cap will increase soon (it has too... there is a lockout in the air)

If JT didn't care about money he could sign with TO for 5M a year but there's no way he is doing that. (Im pretty sure the NHLPA would be all over him for it) He wants 10-11M like he should and MTL is one of the only teams that can give it to him. As for a contender, what else would the Habs be missing at that point? Best goalie in the league that wins game son his own in Price. An elite calibre Dman in Weber, an elite Center now in Tavares, an elite LW'er and the 4th highest goal scorer in the NHL since 2011-12 in Pacioretty, young solid winger/forwards in Drouin and Galchenyuk.

Adding Tavares in free agency makes MTL an absolute contender. Anyone who says otherwise clearly is being bias. The Habs have been a really good team the past 5 years but can't score goals. Adding Drouin and JT can absolutely fix that.

Would they be a lock to win it? Absolutely not but they would be a contender. If Nashville can make it to the finals, so could MTL with help from JT.

Marco is correct when he Nashville can make it to the finals, anyone can. Nashville finished eighth in the Conference. Kings won a Cup finishing eight. What I wrote, was kinda tongue in cheek. But Montreal has a tremendous start last year and then played very ordinary from the new year on. I don't see how they how they have improved their talent this year. My prediction is all seriousness is they finish out of playoffs. But hey, that's why they play the 82 game schedule.
CD282. You're right about those contracts, though that seems to be the way teams are paying their top three guys. Is Price, JT.Weber worth almost 29m long term? Can't think of another team that pays so much for their top three guys.

Fair enough but we're talking about next year with a JT in the fold. That can make a world of difference. Whats the one thing everyone keeps saying about MTL? They need a #1 center! JT fits that bill. Thats where the contention comes into play. We're already a playoff team as is and adding JT only fixes the one thing that stops us from taking the next step.
