Believe it or not, and I believe Doughty to be a top 3 Dman in the league and I would find a way to keep him forever, but I think this is too rich a package to grab a guy that only has 2 years left on his contract and has essentially stated that he doesn't want to hang around under a rebuild scenario! I'll likely get slammed more than you will but. . . .I wouldn't make the offer if I was the Leafs!

No way do i see the Leafs being able to afford Doughty long term, Doughty on his next contract is going to get 7 years $70 million both Nylander and Marner will probably get around 8 years $60 million each and Matthews probably gets around 8 years $96 million. That's like $37 million combined for 4 players about half of the current salary cap.

The affordability of Doughty long term is not at issue here! You have him for 2 years, and 2 runs, without any issues with the cap! After the 18/19 season you reassess the Leafs lineup, and make determinations as to who becomes the ultimate core long term. Gardiner, Reilly, Zaitsev, Doughty, Marner, Nylander, Matthiews, Kadri, . . . . cut and/or paste. . . .(oh yeah there's that Tavares guy too that could go into the mix)!

And Lark: If we don't resign Matthiews, we probably have room for 10 of Detroits "BEST" prospects. . . . .oh right. . . they don't have 10!

The issue is the Kings laugh and block the Leafs number.

For a team that hasn't won a cup in over 50 years, I wouldn't be putting down our prospects maybe they're not as good as the Leafs. But they will do fine. And as far as a JVR centered deal for arguably one of the best top 5 D men in the league. Yeah that's not happening. Kings laugh at this deal and block Lou's number

What nonsense. Please, please just tell me, IF the Kings were to trade Doughty...obviously for futures, put together a offer from another team that would offer more than this post. Maybe Some team might , but comments like yours are so nonsensical.. Please but together an offer from another team. Any deals for the Doughty, seems to always include Marner or Nylander and a lot more. No team offers so much.

Yea, I could see the Kings not wanting this deal, but would any team offer more? I guess the Kings will be happy finishing out of the playoffs again and have Doughty for one more year.

JVR, a depth player, and a conditional pick doesn’t even get you Vatanen, let alone a top tier defenseman. If I’m the Kings the ask is Nylander or Marner or Reilly + Kapanen.

H ockeyNM1510: OK Kings can ask for that, but they aren't getting it from the Leafs. Nor what they get the same type of package from any other team. So if the Kings were to trade Doughty I would like to see some trades to other teams. Of course we don't see these, cause all Doughty trades are to the Leafs. Too much thought would have to go into for another trading partner. And then the naysayers would always says it's too little.

But thanks for not answering my question. What teams would offer more? But it's the same blah blah nonsense. Kings ask for Nylander and more for Doughty.

I love these trade debates over Doughty with my morning coffee. smile

My thoughts:
+ The next two years is the big window for the Leafs so Doughty fits that and he could be the difference in a playoff run.
+ Doug, I would make that trade if I were the Leafs, JVR going opens room for Kapanen. They lose some sweet production this year from JVR but it's worth Doughty for these two years. Nothing they are giving up is critical to their future. +
- I don't see LA trading Doughty since he is a franchise defensemen and they haven't given up hope that they can win another Cup with Kopitar, Doughty, Quick, and Carter. Why should they blow up their chances? JVR, Bracco, and Dermott can't replace Doughty in the playoffs.

Overall, there's a lot that is tempting here for the Leafs because realistically Leafs without Doughty are a good team but with Doughty they become a GREAT team.

I could see the Leafs making the deal though there is no way he signs long term with the Leafs. But LA (almost like the Isles and Tavares) would have trouble trading the face of franchise. Sorta is telling their fans, the team has given up on this year. The Kings finished out of the playoffs last year and a good chance this year too. Just strictly from a hockey view....maybe he should be traded.
