This trade works since Barrie is an RHD with a decent contract. He would slot with Rielly to make our defense look like:

Gardiner-Zaitsev
Carrick-Hainsey

barrie isn't that good. sure he is rhd but so what. a big 5.5m cap hit. in your trade you're not giving up much in nhl value, but that returning cap hit for a marginal defencemen

People said much of the same thing about Justin Schultz before Penguins got him with 2 Cups as their punishment ... Barrie can be really good playing on the PP or generating points from a right handed shot... A team like the Kings would be better off with the Barrie Defense than say what they got now behind Drew currently in NHL... Or doing the dumb pair of Martinez and Muzzin... I've seen more over paid D-men like Kris Russel or whatever is making over 4M, Garrison was like 4.6 sitting in the minors on a buried contract... Sbisa is close to 4M, Sekera I think is around 5.5M, lots of D-men who are over paid while a few under paid like Nashville's top right shot was last year who is currently hurt . Playing on a team like Avalanche its hard for Barrie to shine getting points or doing what he is best at anyways. Subban is like 9M who was playing on the second pair D for Predators so its not that crazy if he is 2nd pair PP specialist for some team...
