Carolina trade I would do. NYI I wouldn't. We got Pickard in the minors. No need for Halak.

Better back up goalie? Gee, Mcilerney has 1 and 1 record this year. Last year win % wise, he had a better record Andersen. Can anyone explain why improving the backup goalie position leads to more wins. Leafs would be carrying over over 3m in performance bonuses money having Halak over McIllerney. Sparks is the top rated goalie in the AHL this year, maybe he or Pickard gets the shot to can get 10 more wins this yearshakes head
Yea having Hanifan would help short term, but just adds to the congestion at LHD. Better ways to use a trade asset like Marner.

i agree with Pal on the back up scenario. . . .Leafs not likely to throw more money at it. Will make do from within! I do think Sparks has earned a shot, but would Leafs lose McIlleney should they waive him? I have long felt that there is a deal with Carolina for a top 4 Dman, but wouldn't put up Marner (straight up)! Both off to slow starts but the upside of Marner is likely higher than Hanifins.

Laynious: Since you asked, about Faulk. Certainly I can see the logic in a Faulk/Marner deal. Why I wouldn't do it, Faulk is a UFA in summer of 2020. Marner summer 2023. And while the Leafs certainly use immediately help at defence, it's not super urgent. IMO fans think other teams Dmen are so much better than the Leafs. Hainsey would go to 3rd LHD, so getting Faulk probably replaces Borgman in the lineup. Do the Leafs want to go the way of not developing cheap players with control.....Borgman or Carrick in obtaining someone like Faulk, at the expense of Marner?
Marner has to playing better to get his true trade value. And Leafs have to confident they have NHL replacements when JVR, and Komarov aren't here next year. And Marner would be one more winger gone.

Marner has higher upside than Hanifin indeed. But d-men have higher market value than wingers. This is why I made the trade straight up. So, I still think I'm right in my trade value.

As for Halak, I'm based on Mac season beginning. If he plays better till TD, then the trade will be unnecessary.

Pickard has no playoff experience. This is the reason that I would trade for Halak. But I admit that's an arguable trade and maybe Leafs should give Pickard a chance to be their backup in playoffs, depending of his performance on the regular season. So, they wouldn't have to trade Sparks.
