buddy, im a die hard habs fan, but even i know Marner can fetch way more. marner is comparable to a hanifin type d man

Other than the offensive numbers Ekholm is better than Josi who is widely regarded as NSH's best D. He's on a steal of a deal for the next 4+ years (if it happened during the season). Sure you could get a Hanifin. But Ekholm is criminally underrated .

Top pairing D are hard to come by. You get a lesser D for better winger, look at the Hall for Larsson trade...

I agree they could get Hanifin as that's fair value wise, but CAR is in need of a top line C. Another Marner trade I could see is for Trouba as he would fit in nicely with Reilly, only issue being Trouba wants to play in the States.
