Is Tanev really the missing piece? It's a little early in the year to dump that kind of package of futures on a player that fits ...where? Carrick comes out?

Carrick could take Borgman's spot. I think TOR is one D away from being a legit cup threat IMO. They could go for a younger D with higher potential than what Tanev is but that might cost you a Marner.

too much to give up for Tanev. He gets hurt way to often and in fact right now is injured

you mentioned hamonic as the template. hamonic could have been traded to a few teams but the flames offered the most, why should the leafs offer the most in a similar deal. has hamonic really helped the flames.

They may be a D away from being a threat but I doubt Tanev is that D. This team is growing, "there will be pain", there is pain. Rielly has taken a big step forward this year playing with Hainsey, I didn't see that coming, so clearly management knows a thing or two. Gardiner and Zaitsev haven't been as good yet as they were last year and Carrick (who they got for nothing) is still just as solid in sheltered minutes. Add Borgman and they're doing alright...without having to package a bunch of futures for another solid player that isn't much better than what they already have.
They need a solid 3rd line centre, if Nylander isn't sliding into the middle, and ideally a Dman that is better than everything they currently have which is next to impossible to find. There is only one Seth Jones.

The real question is what are they going to do with their expiring contracts? Not the guys the have under control for years or the ones they've yet to draft.
