Barry Trotz is under the influence of alcohol or perhaps codeine if he's gonna waste Saros last season on a friendly deal with the preds in their current state and not move onto Askarov. In fact, it would be far more sensible to capitalize on the Devils desperation and trade him at this deadline to get an even larger return considering this season is down the toilet

Definitely a cap dump. I just picked a random RFA for the Hawks. Smith isn't bad and could be helpful for the hawks growing their team. At best Pens add a late pick which they would be comfortable with

It's more about the value than the destination; can replace it with another team. I think getting a cheap/young goalie should be a good priority for them

I'm not an Oilers fan. Leafs don't pick up the performance bonuses. Both him and Gambrell make league min anyways. Brown has to clear waivers and Gambrell can be AHL assigned immediately

Dvorak is a much better defensive asset than Granlund is. Granlund's production (5v5) was on pace with Dvorak while he was on the Preds, but that was getting 60% OZs. When Granlund got traded to the pens, they used him in a more defensive role, and his metrics/produciton crashed a result. Dvorak has been consistently used as a defensive mid-6 center/wing for his career and his production hovers around 0.4-0.5 P/GP despite not always having great linemates. I think it's a clear upgrade and provides cap savings. Pens also get another first, moving to 31st. I think that pick swap is worth it for both teams

$27M in cap on IR making $14.25M in real money is a good deal for them. This team saves them a lot of money. having a lot of guys on 1 year deals also opens the door to many in-season transactions

If you had third grade reading comprehension you can see "Yotes retain 50% on Murray" and letting Murray take a load off of Binner is a lot better than Lindgren. Lindgren's full cap hit can be buried as well. You're basically paying an extra $1M to have a competant backup who can give positive results.

I think Tavares moves to the wing full time next year (save for PP and other specific opportunities). He'll be utilized in much more of a power forward/net front role instead. His skating which already wasn't great has started to really go downhill, I don't know if he should be trusted with center responsibilities next year. He should still be really effective and around a P/GP

They need to find a way to move on from the nurse deal if they can, but other than that, their cap table is actually much healthier than the Leafs.
Bouchard with another year to develop and moving some players like Yamamoto & Ceci for cheaper deals... Worst case they would be better off moving Hyman or buying him out that taking this deal.</div></div>
Meaningful step forward by... winning less games this year than last year? Having less cap flexibility? No meaningful prospects coming up? They regressed. McDavid had a really good regular season but at the end of the day no one cares. No one is taking Nurse and they have too much cap tied up for too long. Either they win next year with guys who care about winning or they've run their course as a core

This whole post is wonky... You are preaching cap relief... But you are asking the Oilers to trade one of their best cap value contracts.
I get that you are saying the renewal will be expensive, but this is for the player the best player in the world thinks is the best player in the world on many nights.
If you want him, you have to leave the Oilers in something they can sell to their fan base as a better financial position against the cap. You have not done that. Not even close.</div></div>
Leaving the whims of an organization to 2 players who have not produced the results you've wanted is what losers do. Good teams make hard choices when it matters most. Leon and Connor have gotten everything they've asked for but haven't been able to get out of the Western conference. For an organization with a history like theirs, regular season stats just simply don't matter.

Fraudsaitl scores on the PP in games 1-4. When the chips are down, does he step up, or does he go 4 games with one measly assist? How can you win if your biggest players aren't performing. He had 50%(!!!) of his playoff points this year on the PP. When will the soft Oilers learn that you just simply aren't going to get calls going your way in the playoffs

Blow it up commiting nearly 40M of cap to 4 players wont work
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>jonh514</b></div><div>Ok 2 questions:
1) with DeBrincat signed for 7.75 vs Draisaitl's 8.5, isn't that like trading 4 quarters for 50 cents?
2) Sanderson & the 1st are valuable, don't get me wrong, but the Oilers are going to have a hard enough time signing and retaining Bouchard, how does having more star players to sign help them when you only created 3.5M in cap relief?
If you wanted to make a deal for Draisaitl, I think you need to start with including Nurse in the deal. Nurse is the problem, not Draisaitl.</div></div>
1) DeBrincat, as a protégé of Kane and Toews, knows what it takes to win. A lower cap hit (plus more term) matters when cups are all that matters. DeBrincat also had a legendary season with Connor in 2014/15 so they reunite.
2) Only fraudulent teams care about the cap next season. Go all in. All the matters is the next chance to win the cup. Worry about paying for it later

Why? Leon Fraudsaitl can't score in the playoffs. Getting a couple younger assets and shoring up the D makes the team a lot more rounded to win when it matters most
