You know, what’s funny is when talking to my dad yesterday, I said there’s a real shot WC2 gets decided by a tie game empty net goal… and it did, Philly basically handed the Caps the spot (Tbf, the Detroit game went to overtime at about the same time, they couldn’t have know they were eliminated)

Pens aren’t out yet, they have tiebreaker over Detroit and Washington, if Detroit and Washington lose in OT, Pittsburgh could still make it

Though Caps are up 2-1 due to a tie game empty net goal (Philly needed a reg win to have a chance which is gone now that Detroit has a point)

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>A_Habs_fan</b></div><div>Well, Washington-Philly will decide a lot, Washington is win and in, Philly I believe would pass Washington off of 4th tiebreaker with a regulation win leaving the door open for Detroit, Pittsburgh and maybe Philly to get the spot</div></div>
Just to point out how close this could become
Washington 89 points- 2 points in any fashion gets them WC2, 1 point would mean they'd need to hope Detroit loses in any fashion and Pittsburgh loses in any fashion (Washington has tiebreaker over Detroit, Pittsburgh has tiebreaker over Washington), a regulation loss would mean Philly passes them and eliminates Washington
Detroit 89 points- Detroit must get at least a point to keep their hopes alive, however, Detroit would lose tiebreaker vs Philly, Pittsburgh and Washington. So they would either need a win and a Washington loss in any fashion, OR 1 point, a Washington regulation loss and a Pittsburgh loss in any fashion
Pittsburgh 88 points- Pittsburgh has the best RW (1st tiebreaker) so a win in any fashion and Detroit + Washington loss in any fashion gets them WC2, OR 1 point and a Washington + Detroit regulation loss would get them WC2
Philadelphia 87 points- Their only shot at the playoffs is beating Washington in regulation, Detroit losing in regulation and Pittsburgh losing in regulation

Lots of game with packed meaning tonight, Bruins-Caps (Bruins can clinch the Atlantic, Caps need the 2 points to stay at WC2), Pens-Preds (Pens need the 2 points to keep their chances up, Preds can be guaranteed to be WC1 in the west), NYI can clinch with 2 points/multiple other teams dropping points, Detroit needs a win, Rangers can clinch the Metro, East and President's, Canucks with an Oilers loss can clinch the Pacific

Why should our top 2 defenceman be outproducing PLD? There's more to hockey than offense. Anyways, the Habs wouldn't want 8.5 of PLD, we're very happy with our core. We also arguably have 5 better skaters than PLD. Suzuki, Caufield, Slafkovsky, Matheson. Then you add Newhook (8 less points than PLD and has played 27 less games), Dach (if he could stay healthy), Guhle has been very good too.

Montreal
1. Figure out the logjams. We have a lot of bottom 6 forwards, a lot of up and coming defenceman, KH will have to decide who stays, who goes and who plays in the minors
2. Add a short term top 6 forward
That's kind of it, I guess player growth could be the 3rd, not much else to do in my eyes

2023-2024 NHL Discussion Thread #5: The Final Stretch
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CantStopWontStop</b></div><div>Let’s just say: it’s fantasy land and in this place Mark Stone is cleared to play in the nhl prior to the final day of the season, and that he has to be activated off ltir because he is no longer injured. In this fantasy, the NHL office 100% believes that a ploy is in place so that Vegas can avoid cap compliance through manipulation of recovery times. (I acknowledge this is most likely not the case today).
Any guesses at:
What actual remedy would Vegas have to become cap compliant: Would they be forced to trade a player? Or is there something they could do roster wise to make this work?
What possible ways could the league render punishment? Just ding them a draft pick and move on? Let them play out the playoffs in the fantasy environment where they’ve failed to be cap complaint by like 8 milly?
We’ve seen punishments for negotiating with other teams players, and we’ve seen punishments for writing contracts that are cap circumvention, but I don’t think we’ve seen “team making player be LTIR when they are not” punishment. And it isn’t like there is a whole off season to consider these things: If this fantasy scenario occured, there’s like a week to make a decision.
I can think of a dozen times a player returned to play prior to estimated recovery times. I’d almost suggest that a player who has gone through numerous long recovery periods has become experienced at it, should be better than average.
Google says this, I haven’t read the source:
“NHL teams that violate the salary cap can face fines of up to $5 million, contract cancellations, loss of draft picks, loss of points, and/or forfeiture of games.“</div></div>
In this <strong>hypothetical</strong> scenario, Vegas would likely be forced to trade, if they don’t, I would expect them to lose their playoff spot to STL, lose draft picks and get a fine

It's very interesting to look at the WC race in the east
NYI 89 points, 3 games left ( NYR, Devils, Pens so 3 hard games)
Pittsburgh 86 points, 3 games left ( Boston, Nashville, NYI, again 3 hard games)
Washington 85 points, 3 games left ( Tampa, Boston, Philly, 3 hard games)
Detroit 85 points, 3 games left ( Toronto, Montreal, Montreal so 1 hard game, 2 easy games)
Philly 85 points, 2 games left ( NJ, Washington, 2 hard games)
I think NYI and Detroit are the 2 teams, Detroit has 2 easy games vs Montreal and NYI already has an inside track
Btw all 5 of those teams play on the 13th so that's going to be some probably good hockey as they all try to win their games and hope the others lose
