2023-2024 NHL Discussion Thread #5: The Final Stretch
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>KSIxSKULLS</b></div><div>That's definitely part of it. Where are they going to play? There's no development if you sign with Carolina. Such a bad situation.<strong> Owner is too cheap to fund an AHL team</strong>.</div></div>
That’s not true at all, Waddell tried to get the AHL to expand to 33 and the AHL said no. Now the Canes are left with buying an existing AHL team (The Canes have said they’re willing to pay much more than the previous AHL transaction) or finding a way to re-affiliate with the Wolves. Their options are limited and they aren’t in a position of power in any negotiations, it’s a tough place to get out of

“The Carolina Hurricanes are trying to sign Blake, a fourth round pick in 2021 draft. If Blake returns to UND, he could become free agent next summer. Carolina doesn’t want that to happen.”
Why is Carolina having such a tough time signing their NCAA prospects?</div></div>
No AHL team likely plays a part. I think the fact the Canes are pretty stacked might too

It's so interesting looking at the WC races. If you look at the East, only CBJ is mathematically eliminated while in the West 6 teams are mathematically eliminated

San Jose Sharks signed Collin Graf (3 Years / $1,283,333 AAV)
Most NCAA FA's don't do much past being a bottom of the lineup player. Will Graf break that, maybe, either way, good signing

But what if Bedard
I think Chicago would take that, Carolina wouldn't. Trades that are many high value pieces for a big name player usually don't go well (See Herschel Walker trade or Lindros trade). It's just better to get the plethora of pieces, especially with a hard cap

Restructuring the Wild Card Race.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>BDHockey</b></div><div>What if rather than each conference getting 2 WC teams what if there were just 4 League wide WC teams? Could result in 3 or even 4 teams from the same conference, but that is fine in my opinion and opens up some interesting possibilities.
- For starters it makes the race so much tighter. It makes games down the final stretch more interesting and some games more important.
- Results in less lame duck teams making the playoffs and fanbases complaining about how weak the other conference is and unfair it is.
- Could result in teams playing on the opposite side of the Bracket, which I think creates some interesting situations that seems really goofy on paper, but could be cool.
I understand this is very unrealistic, but what do we think?
In addition to this I think that you PWHL system to make the bottom feeder teams compete harder in the final stretch. I think that this makes April an even more mad stretch that is basically playoff hockey.</div></div>
I'm not sure that really makes a difference, the 2 WC spots for conferences already eliminate the bad division problem and I don't think there's really ever been a year with a bad conference

That’s also a dumb rule, let coaches run the risk, it makes for more interesting OT’s and higher stakes

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Hurricanes_WPG</b></div><div>Just a heads up, the teams making the finals only play a 4-day week, because the NHL season ends on April 11 (Thursday)
I cannot change the number of days per matchup to lengthen the finals at the expense of the second round, or anything like that.
I can, however, manually change scores, which lends itself to some extra possibilities.
Options (feel free to contribute other ideas):
Just play out the 4 day week and let the game decide who wins.
Double-count Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from the second round so that the finals still have 7 days.
Count fantasy points for each team's NHL Playoff Game 1 and add those to the total.
Any alternate options must be agreed upon by BOTH eventual finalists before the first puck drop on April 5, or else we just run with the 4-day finals.</div></div>
No, as far as I can tell, the finals in our league will be from April 8th to April 18th (which is the final regular season day)

Habs fans im sorry Part 2
What is that Philly trade, Montembault has been carrying us, why move him for pennies. I really don't get that Ottawa trade (for Ottawa), that seems like a lateral move on LD while giving up Korpi and a 1st. The Habs might do that Oilers trade if Guhle isn't there

Not really, Caufield has diversified his game, he's no longer only a shooting threat, he's really improved his passing game, he heads to the net, his defensive game has gotten better, he's a different player this year, I wouldn't necessarily say he's having a better or worse year, he's just been different hence peoples expectations being off

Just to put my season in perspective, week 1-7, I went 1-6 and averaged 77 points per week, then, from week 8-23, I went 6-10 and averaged 100.8 points per week (which includes 3 loses when scoring over 109 points in a week), truly a tale in 2 parts
