What you should be questioning is why you and others on here think they know the value of players better than actual NHL media members and insiders.</div></div>
he is no where comparable to savard. Chiarot has been so bad this year i wouldn't give a third for him. the only comparable is they're both defensemen

What's with it? Delusions. That's about it.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Habs4ever</b></div><div>I cannot speak for anybody but myself, but I will tell you why Chiarot will probably fetch a 1st. He isn't worth that, but this year UFA's on expiring contracts that can handle playoff minutes and hitting with a decent cap hit are not in abundance. Add to that six teams that have said they are going for it this year and teams will get into a bidding war which will greatly push up his stock, which will benefit Montreal.</div></div>
He probably won't because it's a buyers market loaded with LDs.

Well we don't know how many teams are actually interested in him versus speculation. Unfortunately the two get interchanged quite often. In his case, I can see if someone maybe wants him as a 3rd pair guy, but the Blues need a 2nd pair guy and he's not good enough on a championship team.

Whats with all the Chiarot hype
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>habs1289</b></div><div>Analytics have nothing to do with how a defensive player plays the gap on an opposing player or how efficient they are at wearing down opposing players in the corner or in front of the net which is worth something to actual nhl coaches and GMs come playoff time .. I’m not saying he’s worth a first and a prospect but he’s definitely worrh a first to a contending team or a 2nd and a B prospect</div></div>
Ok but my point is, if they don't play a good gap consistently, it isn't measured as a stat but it will show up in the form of goals against, expected goals against, penalty differential, etc. Not many guys can get away with poor play from the eye test and good analytics, the results add up over time. FWIW a 2nd round pick at the deadline would be pretty reasonable given the decisions we see NHL GMs make all the time. I hate all the 1st + chatter but it isn't going anywhere when you've got media guys pumping the tires.

While I agree with you, even the eye test doesn't pass here. His lateral step is lacking, he often loses focus in front of the net. He doesn't make a strong outlet pass. He really isn't that great. He's a glorified Bortuzzo.

You need the stats/analytics and the tape to tell the whole story. When you watch games, there are plenty of guys that look like they're doing a whole lot and in the grand scheme not much of it matters. For example, if Chiarot can't keep his gap on an entry, it doesn't matter how well he clears the crease. It's like falling into holes and then bragging about how good you are at climbing out of holes. So much defensive value lies in what <em>doesn't</em> happen, it can make it difficult to really assess performance without seeing the long-term results in the measurable stats.

His numbers from the playoffs aren't even good, he can just get away with more illegal stuff when they swallow the whistles. Habs were outscored 21-13 with him on the ice 5v5 in the playoffs.

Who It Should Be
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>mokumboi</b></div><div>Bozak is washed, I think. Pains me to say that, but the guy can't even win draws anymore.
As for Barby, he has already had seasons of 25% and 23.3%, and he's pretty selective about shooting, so it's not the craziest thing ever for him to be over 20%. All players go through this stuff at some point. Schenn slumped way harder for way longer last season. Frenchy has slumps most every season. Kyrou's heading there now.
But I am starting to think maybe our group needs a small shake up to wake the boys up. Their effort level has been wildly inconsistent lately. Maybe it's a lull, maybe we have some nags going around, maybe it's an issue to worry about. I'm not sure. I think I might be more inclined to try moving Schenn before moving cheaper, younger guys like Barby and Sunny. Just from a cap future standpoint, really. I've even wondered if the Jets would do a Copp swap built around him. The things that stop me with that idea is 1) he's so good in the group & 2) that contract ain't gonna easy to work with</div></div>
You might be right about Bozy, hard to say. He's not a great option for 4C and he's getting beat out anywhere else too. To be clear, Barby is good value and good fit no matter where you play him, but if some desperate team comes in with a big offer, you gotta listen to them. Could flip futures for more help on D while trusting Dak/Brown/Bozak to step into the forward hole.
You're spot on with Schenn, it hurts the room big time but escapes the potential albatross contract.

OMG I obviously want no part of that article. And I agree 100%. Soucy is probably the best choice of all, all things considered.
As for Barby, I'm far more concerned about Kyrou right now. He's been a shadow of himself since the ASG. I get the feeling he has a nagging injury.

True, Kyrou hasn't been great. Just more reason to mix things up. The Buch-Thomas-Vladi line has a natural feel to it, they should leave it alone. Kyrou can't seem to find his role when he is on the ROR line, and it makes more sense to put him on a line that gets easier matchups. I liked the way Brown played when he got a chance with ROR, maybe they should go back to that config.

So Barbashev won’t shoot 26% for a full season? I’m shocked. Sell HIGH.
