I know that. But it is technically possible.

Then Draistail and McDavid total 21m have off season injuries and will out for the whole year. This 10% rule would just allow the Oilers to spend about 8.3m in replacement for the season. No, the Oilers could spend 21m in replacement players.</div></div>
The could spend 21 million on replacements after they have submitted their start of the season roster to the NHL. They would start the year with both on the cap and they place them on LTIR after the "start" of the season and the sign/trade for their replacements.

Depends on a case by case basis, look at the Red Wings with Zetterberg and Franzen, ARI with Hossa, Tor with Clarkson, ect. all of the retired on LTIR from multiple years again there is no set procedure for it depends on each case and the medical review. Yes you do need league approval each season, and they have to go through a medical check each year.

There is no procedure for it. LTIR retirement is based on the health of the player in question. If they are too hurt to continue playing they will be placed on LTIR until the contract runs out if hurt playing hockey to allow access to medical care provided by the teams.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>Sure teams are supposed to be just 10% over the cap, but I'm guessing that is for active players. The had 5.25m Lupul and 5.25 on LTIR, that was 10.5m when the cap much lower. The Leafs still had signed players that played...andwherf very close to the cap for years.. Teams certainly aren't handcuffed by the cap if they have LTIR players
You're correct about the bonuses, when a team is able to pay them is affected by the usage of LTIR.
But here on CF. so many think short term LTIR or retirement is the fix to help a teams cap.</div></div>
That started for the Leafs in 16-17 and they only used 63,299 in LTIR they simply had a very cheap team that year. Then they used 5,763,198 in 17-18, so they never came close to the 10% LTIR cap.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CMcAvoy73</b></div><div>Spot on. Though didn’t it used to be 15%</div></div>
From CapFriendly's LTIR FAQ's :
Can LTIR be used in the off-season?
Yes, LTIR can be used in the off-season while the 10% off-season cushion is active. LTIR in the off-season is calculated using the basic equation outlined above, which permits a team to exceed the off-season salary cap. To use off-season LTIR the team must provide doctors proof that the player in question will continue to be injured at the beginning of the regular season for 10 NHL games and 24 calendar days.

Price and Weber Retire
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CMcAvoy73</b></div><div>The description makes it sound like you think they’re retiring, rather than going on LTIR.
0% chance that happens. I think that would cost Price 31.25M, and Weber, 6M. They aren’t doing that. There is a chance that neither play again and spend the next four years on LTIR, but LTIR doesn’t exactly equate to “free cap space.” It can be used, so it is very useful, but it isn’t exactly the same.</div></div>
LTIRetirement will also not work for the Habs with both or even just Price. Since you can only be over the cap by 10% in the offseason (8.25 this year) you would have a team cap of about 72 million not 82.5 million if both wound up on LTIR. And that is before accounting for any bonuses from this year that will roll over.

In truth? Future impact. Thats what any kind of cap dump would require to the wings or any team really. You have to give something that fits the opening of the competitive window. For the Red Wings 1 of two pieces come to mind either an impact center prospect (which TOR lacks) or top picks. How or what is added would depend on what other deals would be available to wings for their cap space and other teams willing to take on the leafs players.

Muzzin can not be moved before free agency shakes out. Ian Cole is a UFA will have a lower cap hit (more then likely), the same age, less injury concerns, and same type of physical presents on the back end. CAR is going to be hard pressed to resign him this offseason. Other names that come to mind if this is the impact you are looking for are Nutivaara, Zadorov, and Chiarot. Then there are the trade targets none are the same as Muzzin but offer some of the same things at a lot lower of a cost then this ask.

Another Idea
Again it comes down to what is Fiala's ask? What kind of contract does his camp want, is he willing to sign long term before testing UFA next year? If he wants market value it isnt worth giving up cost controlled players when winger isnt a pressing need in Detroit. Also if wont commit long term then we are shooting the moon next year without having the center position nor the left side of the defense rebuilt. So it comes down to something neither team controls what does Fiala want.

This would be highly dependent on what Fiala's ask is and if he is determined to seek UFA. If he is willing to talk a long term extension at a reasonable cap hit before the trade than its fair value. But if he wants top dollar or wants to walk in a year as a UFA then no.

I think this is less of an issue for the Red Wings, if the pieces were young players with top 6/top 4 LD upside they would think about it. But its more of the same of what they already had that's the problem.

Anything that would actually convince the Red Wings to part with the 2nd line center. None of the pieces you had in the package are players that add value to the red wings that they do not have already. Walker a RD on a team deep in the position, Andersson a center prospect that has struggled in the NHL sort of like M. Rasmussen, and Thomas a center prospect that is older in ahl (22 already) and would be behind Veleno. What are the wings getting in this deal other then weaker? Depth is not the wings problem its high end talent and this does nothing to solve that.

That is something we all do from time to time, its a persons inherent bias at play, we tend to focus on the part that impacts us and not the other side. We think good value and good trade are the same thing. A trade idea on here can be "fair value" for both teams but make no sense for one or the other or both.

Value wise it might be close, but look at the Red Wings organization, they are deep at both wing and defense and its biggest weakness is center depth and top end talent. In this trade you have them giving their only true top 6 center for pieces that add to their strength while also increasing the organizations biggest weakness.
If the Red Wings even consider a Larkin trade a true POTENTIAL top 6 center prospect is a must. Its the same problem I have looking at all the Ranger fans trades for Larkin, they maybe fair value wise, but they hurt the wings more by increasing the organizational weakness. The pick might turn into that but mid to late first is a bad bet to get a top notch center.

Honestly if this is the best that can be had, then the Red Wings are better off signing him to a 1 year deal and moving him at the deadline after he proves he is healthy, and if he is not then you offer him a short term contract in Jan and hope for the best. And I am not saying that your trade is bad, but its not what the Wings have stated that they want.

Come on, at least try and look up something to backup what you are saying. Top 4 dman, really? He averages the 6th most minutes on the Pens and is a whole two minutes behind the next closest. The Pens do not see him as a top 4 guy and neither does the rest of the league. Its an bad offer for Bert and you know it. If the wings trade Bertuzzi it will be for a far better return than this.
Also have you seen the Red Wings prospect pool for wingers? Its Centers that the wings need far more depth or more importantly impact with. The deal offers nothing of what the wings stated goal of the off season is, the building of long term sustainable success.

The Red Wings charged the Rangers a 2nd for a Staal a player they could use and cost a total of 5.7 against the cap this is almost 5 times that (buyout cap hit total is 26.8) amount and 8 times the term. They are going to ask a price that the Wild will not pay.

Have you looked at the buyout of Parise contract? I
21-22: 2.3 mil
22-23: 6.3 mil
23-24: 7.3 mil
24-25: 7.3 mil
Then 25-29 = 833,333
That's going to cost a lot more then a 1st and a 3rd to move. The cost would be so bad and painful that you would agree that its just better to keep him.

Not with the expansion draft around the corner. Just hold out until you get the best deal possible from the Rangers or let them lose him to the Kracken. That is the difference this year, expansion. No one is going to pay full price for something the Rangers are not going to be able to protect in the draft, same applies to Columbus.

I don't think these trades and signings are realistically going to make the team a contender. Also the wings deal will not be accepted by the wings there is no way the allow any kind of condition on a deal that is 3 drafts away as is. I think the value is fine, but you will lose the ability to lottery protect the pick by having it that far out.

No matter how good Nylander is, the Red Wings are in no position to trade multiple assets for one at this time. This is not an underpayment at all, its two players who in terms for production will outproduce Nylander alone along with an extra pick, while costing bit more cap. I don't think for a second the wings even think about this cause it runs counter to want Stevie Y wants which is a deep team with multiple options on offense vs a shallow team with high end talent.

Just a dumb random thought
If I'm recalling this correctly, the assumed value of draft picks takes years of data into consideration, not just that particular draft year. It changes year over year due to players producing at various levels. I think it's explained in the link itself.
I'm only operating on the pretense of a buyout for the sake of BStinson's math: I personally believe that Neal has enough value to warrant a middle-ground (ie: one year on the roster, two years bought out at $1.25M per) approach. Even over 4 years, $1.25M isn't that much, especially for the Wings, so I'm not sure what you mean by "too much for too long".[/quote]
Yes but it still based on past years, and unlike most years this years draft might be the ultimate crap shoot, with the lack of scouting that could be done, and the lack of playing time for the prospects. Dead money for the wings has to include Abby's hit as well.
