2023-24 Season Thread
Anyone else nervous for the final games? I know the Caps weren't supposed to be in this position so we should all just enjoy the ride, but I REALLY want to see / care about some playoff hockey this year...
9 games left - any predictions on how the Caps will finish?

The VAN trades seems a bit too much. Hronek looks good but his numbers away from Hughes aren't great. I'd still like him but not at that price.</div></div>
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ClockReads2113</b></div><div>Jensen is a legit top 4 defensive defensemen. On his own he's probably getting a 2nd, especially with money eaten. I like Robertson but he's looking like a middle 6 winger. Caps have plenty of those. They need legit top 6 guys.</div></div>
Agreed - Caps should not be retaining and should certainly not be adding if retention is there for Jensen. Also, I am just not a fan of Robertson so I would prefer the caps stay away in general.
Also agree with the Hronek trade - I like the idea and I really like Hronek, but the Caps are in no position to trade away 1st round picks. Make it a 2nd and I would take that all day.

they have no need for him</div></div>
In this example trade, Iorio would be gone, Bear is in player assistance (which I doubt will go into next year, but my point is there are question marks. Plus he has not played much and when he has, it has not been good), Carlson is staying but getting old, and I expect the Caps to trade 1/2 between Jensen and TVR. So that leaves:
Carlson
Jensen or TVR
Bear (question mark)
Hronek is exactly what the Caps could use - a solid young RHD that will be Carlson's replacement when he retires (I don't see Iorio being that player, but please correct me if you think that is a wrong view). I see this trade very similar to the Sandin trade last year.

No that's a good point - I just don't see him getting a spot in the lineup. Everyone seems to be meshing well and when everyone is healthy, I don't see him fitting in

I actually think the Caps definitely consider this (and that's someone who really likes Iorio). Hronek (at ~7.25m AAV) would be exactly what the Caps need, especially with Carlson getting up there in age. Honestly, I am surprised you didn't add another pick (not a 1st as the Caps are in no position to be getting rid of their 1st round picks).
Regarding Iorio - I still think he has the potential to be a top 4 defender but hasn't progressed as well/fast as I thought he would. I think next year he still could be ready for full-time NHL, but definitely within 2 years. IMO he will be a very solid middle pair RHD.

I don't see Leonard signing for the playoffs, especially with the team rolling as it is now.
Would also keep Beck in the lineup

Selling too low on Jensen and Milano. Milano is a 0.5 PPG and is signed to a great contract. I wouldn't move him
Jensen should return more than a 4th, but I do agree - Caps should look to move him

Caps Next Season
I expect Oshie will retire at the end of this year.
This team above would probably be the best thing for the organization in the future, but...
I think the Caps should try to compete this upcoming offseason - this is probably the last season that Ovi could get one (cap rising, young guys developing nicely, Kuzy/Backy/Oshie off the books). I'd like them to go after a top 6 winger (ex. Reinhart) and then upgrade the defense (either a true top 4 RHD or a #1 LHD). I don't see Sandin / Fehevary as a true #1 LHD and the right side needs to be reevaluated with the disappointing seasons from Carlson, Jensen, and somewhat TVR (at times).

Wilson has been one of the biggest disappointments to me this year, consistently taking horrible penalties, not scoring enough, and his underlyings aren't great</div></div>
Trouba only had a phone hearing - IDK I am probably being bias but Trouba's slash was so absurd
But agreed regarding Wilson....that new contract could be very, very bad...

Yeah I can see that - he is getting 2nd line minutes now (around 17-19 min a game), but the Caps do play everyone pretty equally for the most part (or try to). If he gets anything above 4m (which I highly doubt), that would be too much

While I agree it seems like too much, he won't get less because Protas is getting 3.3m - he won't get paid less than him.
A lot of Caps fans really really like McM - I've never been too high on him...he is definitely a solid 3c though and with the cap raise, 5x3.5m for a younger, more offensively skilled Lars Eller, I'd take it

If that's the asking price, let him walk. Patches for that price maybe but would rather get a true top 6 forward

While I agree that the defense needs some work (both in point production and defensive ability), having only 2 20-goal scorers right now on roster is not good (3 with Mantha but he won't be back next year)...Caps desperately need to have a offensively skilled forward next year (along with a change on the right side (Jensen and/or TVR specifically)
