Contenders - 2023 Offseason
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TheRealisticGuy</b></div><div>Anytime soon ... In my scenario Sorokin isn't extending this summer and every Isles fans would rather sign and trade him for the best return then waiting at the 2024 TDL</div></div>
Turcotte is heading towards bust status and the isles don’t need an RD. Petersen is basically a cap dump and the 2024 1st would be in the late first round if sorokin went to the kings. If sorokin was made available for trade there would be better offers. I’d rather savoie, a 1st, and like a 3rd from buffalo than this package

Kane to the islanders
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Db1899</b></div><div>The isles aren’t making the playoffs this season. They have about a 14% chance. Kane isn’t putting them over 50%. Isles haven’t had recent playoff success. Two years is a long time ago</div></div>
I’m personally not a huuuuge fan of dom lusczczczcczczczczcyn’s model, as I don’t think there is a way to quantify a team’s chance of making the playoffs. Yes the isles have played more games than other teams and have a difficult schedule for the final 30 games, but after acquiring Horvat, getting healthier, and getting a much needed break, maybe they could go on a run. With teams like Washington and Pittsburgh on the decline, it’s not too unrealistic to see the islanders snag one of the wildcard spots. We’ve made noise in the past with worse teams in the playoffs, so if we make it I like our chances regardless of our seed.

This is probably close. As much as i love wahlstrom, he’s pretty much out for the season and if the isles are gonna go all-in after the Horvat trade, might as well go all the way

And they’d still be a bottom 10 offensive team with ovechkin and Meier on top of Horvat?

I don’t like it either but I’m still gonna support the team even if I disagree with moves made by them. If this is the direction the team is gonna go, then I think these are the moves they should make to see the short-term success that is desired

I Guess They Buy Now
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Db1899</b></div><div>"the team isn't that awful right now" - thats the problem. The isles are constructing a team that will be 8th -12th for at least the next 3-4 years. You're not factoring in regression for the players that are approaching 30.
The teams that went to the Stanley cup finals had minimum 2 star defenseman. Eberle is better than horvat.</div></div>
What I am saying is that it’s not too hard to improve this team. The top-six is solid, the defense core is solid, and the goaltending is the best in hockey. All they have to do is find some cheap guys that can fill out the bottom-six better than bailey, martin, and Clutterbuck. I agreed with you in the past that tearing down the team and trying to get a top talent in this draft was the right move, but things have changed.
Eberle is not better than Horvat btw

what is his plan
The best move now is to target depth guys to fill out the bottom six. Bjugstad, Domi, athanasiou, bemstrom, and maybe even a guy like Anthony duclair come to mind. The isles teams that made runs in the past did so due to their depth, and not necessarily the top-six. While this team has a better top-six than past isles teams, the bottom-six is a far-cry from what it was. If this team is gonna try and make a run, those are the moves to make.

The sad part about this trade is the isles currently have the worst present and future in the NHL. ive never seen anything like it in my life</div></div>
The cap and prospect situation sure is ugly, but the team isn’t that awful right now. Solid top six with Barzal, Nelson, Horvat, lee, and Palmieri, decent center depth, solid defensemen, and a superstar goalie. Worse islanders teams have been one win away from the Stanley cup final. If this team can make it to the playoffs, who knows what can happen

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Db1899</b></div><div>Horvat doesn't make the isles a playoff team, Horvat leaving the isles after missing the playoffs would be an extremely bad look for Lou and it would ultimately force them in to a rebuild.
I can't root for the islanders at all costs. They just made a braindead trade, and the only way I will be content is if it blows up in their face.</div></div>
A rebuild for the islanders at this point (since we have no prospects) would go beyond trading Nelson, sorokin, parise, and Varlamov. At this point we’re talking about trading Pelech, pulock, Barzal, Dobson, and lee. So given that the Horvat trade is done, why not just root for some success now and not success in like 7-8 years after literally the entire team has been torn down and all the prospects accumulated from said tear down develop.

A logical take on the Horvat trade
It’s not so much the player than it is what we gave up to get the player. After losing 10 out of our last 13, it appeared that the writing was on the wall for this group. This trade feels like a case of the “sunk cost fallacy”

Raty wasn’t called “untouchable” because of his pure talent, but because the isles have very few young guys and it would be insane for them to trade Raty. He was untouchable simply because the isles should have never traded him, not because he is some transcendent talent
