Caps 82mil
<a href="/users/netminder71" target="_blank">@netminder71</a> Vrana isn't getting a 4 year deal. Stop suggesting it everywhere. A 4 year deal will walk him right to UFA.
He'll get a 2 or 3 year (tops) bridge. If he's getting any term - itll be 6 or 7 years, but that won't happen with the cap.

So you traded for Honka, then didn't qualify or sign him. Then on top of that signed Lovejoy, so even if you DID sign Honka, he realistically would have to pass through waivers and play in the AHL.

Caps 20-21
Caps are not signing Vrana to a 4 year deal. It will either be 2 or 6/7. 4 will walk him right to being a UFA at 27. They'll either buy UFA years, or sign a bridge where his contract will expire while he's still a RFA.

0% chance the Caps sign Vrana for 4 years. That walks him right to being a UFA at 27. He'll either get a 2 year $3.5mm or 6 or 7 at ~$5mm.

Adding young talent and staying competitive
You can get more out of Dallas. See my Arm-GM.
RE Priskie: The Hurricanes and Fox had leverage, as Fox was a junior with a year of college eligibility remaining. Priskie has no benefit to telling the Caps where he would sign, as he's a graduated senior who will be a UFA in less than 3 months. Fox is also more talented.
You're also over the cap considering the Caps overage penalties.

Roster on the cheap
Problem is you're a $1mm over the cap with the overages from this year. And that's including only having one extra forward.

Caps
Biggest problem is that you're about $1mm over the cap when you include the overages, and don't have a backup forward at all. So essentially $2mm over (aka Carl Hagelin) in this scenario.

Really like the premise of it all. Just a few notes.
I don't think GMBM will go over $3.5mm for Connolly. I agree that the 4x5 is about what he'll probably get offered on the open market, but I don't think he'll get that in DC.
Stars trade - I'd rather upgrade the picks from Dallas to a 2nd + 3rd or 4th (similar to the Johansson deal) and no Nishushkin and keep Andre at the QO figure or offer him a more realistic 1 x 2.5mm deal. The team has the space to do it, and Riley Barber can get a shot at 3rd line RW. Maybe sign a Thomas Vanek type (not saying necessarily him) but someone of that ilk to compete for a depth scoring role.

He plays against the other teams top PP, which is the group that typically scores. So your #1 PK unit usually gives up more because they are not facing the #2 PP unit. That doesn't make them "worse" than the #2 PK unit.</div></div>
Wrong. PK units, while there is a "top unit" are generally more interchangeable than top PP to second PP. For instance since (I assume) you're a caps fan.

No interest in Simmonds here. Wouldn't get any time on the PP and can't PK. Would basically just be used for 11 minutes of 5v5 a game in WSH. Not a good fit here.

Simmonds and Gudas For The Win Plus Boyle
Simmonds is a terrible fit in WSH. Would never get PP time, doesn't PK. So you'd solely have him for 5v5 where he's, at this point in his career, average. Giving up two 1sts, Andre, Geisser and Bowey? You're shipping out value that would be more than enough to get a Matt Duchene. This is awful.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Eli</b></div><div>That's a relief. Now subtract Jay Beagle's salary, and adjust for inflation, to get Vrana's actual value.... unless Vrana becomes a top ten faceoff guy who chips in on both special teams and has 200 career points, in what's left of this season. I'm not putting anything past him, of course. :)
Can Burakovsky for Goldobin wait until after the playoffs?
I like signing MJ back at 2.5. That's reasonable.</div></div>
What does Jay Beagle have to do with anything? Vrána is comperable to Elias Lindholm circa last summer, hence the long term extension for the young RFA.

Carlson Sign & Trade + (LAK, NYI, OTT, EDM)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Claesson4Norris</b></div><div>I'm aware they can't sign for 8 years otherwise. What I said was UFA's 'DON'T' Sign somewhere so they can be traded. And why would a team give up assets for one more year of an old John Carlson? It does not happen. part of being a cup contender is having to accept that good players sometimes leave.</div></div>
Jesus. This is going to be difficult to explain but i'll try to simplify it for you.
John Carlson signs with Washington so that he receives a contract with a length of 8 years. 8x8.25 = $66mm. EDM, to give John that amount of money on the market would have to give him a 7x$9.4mm contract to also equal $66mm. That extra year provides EDM wtih an extra $1.2mm in cap space for 7 years.
I understand winning a Stanley means we have good players. In all honesty, I would love for John to stay in Washington. However, if he is going to leave, making an attempt to monetize his departure is how you maintain long term chances at winning multiple Cups.
Got it?
