Mittelstadt likely goes nowhere if he continues with another strong season. He's a stabilizing force on nearly any line we play him, he's one of our best guys along the boards, and he can fill in at 1C and not look a step out of place. He'd pretty much be a lock for 50-60 pts, can play wing or center, and a grindy game or a skilled one, whatever is needed. You don't give those kinda guys up. If he doesn't, if he can't find a consistent rhythm, then maybe.

I can get why Carolina wants that package for Pesce. I think Buffalo will do whatever possible to avoid trading any of Peterka, Quinn, Kulich, Savoie, or Levi.

If there's a deal to be made, it'd be somewhere in the middle. Jokiharju, (Olofsson @ 50% OR Isak Rosen), 2nd rd pick. Carolina gets a serviceable young RHD, a skill winger either fully developed or only needing one more year in the AHL, and a better pick.

Jokiharju can't handle 20+ mins a night, nor play PK/shutdown defense. I'm not saying Murphy is THE guy we should go for, but in terms of skillset/contract he outlines what we need at 2RHD. Swap in for Demelo or Fabbro or Borgen, it isn't a huge deal

I would take something similar to this from BUFs perspective. We have a ridiculous stable of forward prospects and <em>maybe</em> two long-term spots in our forward group.

We'd need to move Jacob Bryson first, and probably send Kale Clague down. But otherwise it'd be nice to bolster our group. Jokiharju has really improved his play recently, but that 4-5 slot could definitely use an upgrade

Enlighten me how we'd keep Chychrun when it came time to resign? The guy can't stay healthy and still would've asked for 8m.

Between Dahlin, Power, and Chychrun, you'd have close to 30m tied up. Even at a ridiculous 87m cap, that's ~35% of your cap spent between THREE defensemen. With Samuelsson, that means your top-4 dmen take up over 40% of your cap. Yiiiiiiiiiikes, that's like a reverse Toronto.

Weird. Sam Ventura & his numbers team must see something they like here. Our 3LHD defenitely needed an upgrade but idk if this is one compared to Bryson/Clague.

Bloom was like 10-15th on our prospect chart, but still he seemed like a decent chance at being a strong bottom-sixer that can kill pks and still chip in points. A bit too much to give up imo

As some necessary context, Laaksonen has been a healthy scratch for most of the AHL season. Rochester isn't good at defense, and yet his D game is so leaky that he wasn't getting game time. We were playing guys on PTOs over him.

I hope the change of scenery helps. He has some offensive talent, hopefully a new org and new coaches can take a fresh approach with him. Meanwhile, Rochester desperately needs steady defensemen, so I'm hoping this is done to address that and give our boys some support.

1. 5th or 6th, likely in the conversation for a playoff spot until March-ish is my guess.

2. PP1 will likely change all year. We have a lot of offensive weapons and offensive prospects that need experience, so my guess is Granato won't shy away from swapping things around to get guys like Cozens, Mitts, Krebs, hell even Quinn or Peterka PP1 time. Expect Dahlin, Thompson, and Olofsson to be mainstays though--having guys who specialize in one-timers on both dots is very nice.

3. Cozens is probably the most obvious choice. He played a very good game last year and only picked up steam as the season went on. He just needs to be willing to shoot more, and that's something he seems to be working on. With better wingers to play with too, I think he should see a sizeable jump from his 40pts last season. Mittelstadt is another, he just needs to prove he can be consistent (both production- and health-wise) as his flashes of talent have been very good over the past two years. He was our best player coming out of camp last year, and seemed destined to be our 1st line C, but got injured in the first game of the season.

4. Okposo is my guess. He was shooting almost too well last season, and I think he'll come back down to a 12G + 18A year. Outside of that, I think the NHL world is expecting Power to put up Makar rookie-esque number which is unfair. He won't be getting top-pairing nor PP1 minutes anytime soon, so I can see him having a "good" rookie season and not a "great" one.

5. Like the rest, Comrie gets 40-45 games, and the rest end up being a split between Andy and UPL. I don't see it being an even divide either, I think UPL gets those games through injuries elsewhere, or he earns a spot later in the season and takes over 1B duties.

lmao kindly keep quiet when it's clear you don't know what you're talking about. UPL was injured in late April after he got checked into his own post and thus Dell played out the rest of the season+playoffs. Otherwise whenever the two were both in Rochester at the same time, Luukkonen had the majority of the starts.

Good stuff, I can see why it took later into the summer to hammer out first year 2-way, second year one-way. Honestly he just needs to prove he can stay healthy this year and I think he'll have no problem taking the 1B position next season.

Rochester's defense has been an absolute sieve for the past couple years and probably again this year, so it's no wonder his stats look wildly different from the AHL to NHL. He played very well with Buffalo last season and should get another 10-15 games this year, maybe more depending on Anderson.

Man I was expecting this comment section to be like every other Buffalo thread and CapFriendly doesn't disappoint.

It's wild that Norris, Suzuki, and Thomas had more expensive contracts signed after one big year, and I can hardly find the same condescending comments on those signings. Tage signs for less money and term, and yet this is getting blasted by people who haven't watched a second of Sabres hockey in the last decade. It's a calculated risk, not the ghost of Chiarelli at the reins.

There are some key differences between those each of those three and Thompson, and yeah that's why Tage has gotten less, but as always context really doesn't matter here.

Cozens should get that if he continues to improve, and that'd be great.

Tage at 5.75? Either you think he's in for a sharp regression, or that goals don't factor into $$$? He nearly potted 40, and unless he plummets back to a 30pt guy, I don't see why his agent takes that contract. All other centermen who exceeded 35 goals last season are making 8m+, except for Hintz who's the same age, and Lindholm + Nelson who are on daylight-robbery contracts.

To put it better from BUF's perspective:

I don't think that's a bad offer in a vacuum. The problem is, Buffalo has so many kids needing roster spots. We're at the spot in our rebuild where we need to give out serious chances to our younger players.

Dahlin, Samuelsson, Power, Jokiharju, Bryson, Fitzgerald--All under 25, and then Lyubushkin already signed. There's seven D, and I don't think a 4th, 5th, and 7th is worth one of those young guys not getting NHL chances.

Couture's combo of age and contract length is an immediate non-starter for Buffalo. At 33 with 5 more years at $8m, he will more than likely:

- Regress sooner than later
- Be an expensive contract to move once that happens
- Tie up cap space when we have so many young, talented players to pay in the upcoming years

The momentary short-term improvement is not worth all these downsides. And that isn't even considering losing a 2nd in a deep draft and a great playmaking center prospect.
