state of the roster - my opinion
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>AudioCats</b></div><div>I like a lot of this, but a question I've had for people is ERod's contract. If you're bullish on him like I am, I think now is the ideal time to lock him up long-term. I'm thinking 5 years at 2.8 - 3. Is that a lot for what we saw last season? Sure. But when his usual linemates aren't Sobotka and Tage Thompson, I think he's be threatening around 35-40 points a season, not to mention the intangibles in his toolbox that are invaluable already.
I do agree with others, I think Larsson should be our 4C. He's excellent at the dot and even with a ridiculous 86% share in defensive starts, he did admirably considering just how dire most of the roster was. Will he get through arbitration is a fair point, but he's a positive known quantity and I think some stability is good with the rest of the roster being upended. Girgs is someone I'd really want as a 13th forward, filling in across the bottom six if an energy guy gets hurt (Larsson, Smith, Okposo, ERod maybe).</div></div>
I think it would be tough to get ERod to take that sort of deal. Low money long term contracts are rare because players tend to bet on themselves to improve and earn more money down the road. I like the idea though if he was willing to take something reasonable.

Following the Rumors
The main problem with this roster is you're in cap hell going forward. How are you going to give Reinhart and Montour new deals after this season with only Bogosian and Wilson coming off the books? Reinhart, Montour, Mittelstadt, Olofsson, Nelson, and Pilut will all need new deals and you will have about $17,200,000 in cap space (maybe $20 million if the cap goes up another $3 million) Reinhart is going to get at least $7 of it and Montour will get at least another $5 of it. So you're left with $8 million in cap space to sign your 4 RFA's that will likely eat around $5.5 million total, so you have $2.5 million in cap space but the next season Dahlin is due...even if the cap goes up another $3 million you only have $10 million in cap to work with as Perreault is coming off the books. Dahlin is going to get close to all of that if he is as good as advertised.
You didn't leave enough cap space to make any moves during the season and it's a very bleak outlook long term

Buffalo Buying for the future
IMO you did a very good job. Let me give you my take on the trades:
Hutton > Smith so let's take that 3rd to balance the trade
Skinner = Dubé, Dillon + Välimäki, Juuso + 2020 2nd round pick (CGY) (I could be in error but a player on track for 50 goals would bring back an "A" prospect (Välimäki), a "B" prospect (Dubé) and a pick (2nd) I do not think the 1st needs to be added to balance the trade.
Beaulieu for a third seems to be about correct.
Okposo => Lucic
Nulander < Puljujärvi, I cannot see Gretzky adding a 1st to this trade. On the other hand if Okposo is on permanent IR due to 3 concussions in 2 years, maybe the Sabres could get a 1st in return

5 Interesting Trade Deadline Landing Spots
The best case scenario for the Sabres is to trade Skinner at the TDL and then the Sabres sign him as a UFA. Tricky on all parts I know, but the fact that Skinner hasn't been extended so far makes me think that the long term Skinner/Buffalo relationship might not be happening.
Duchene and Stone would seem to the best pieces available and Ottawa HAS to trade both. Duchene to Winnipeg. Stone to Calgary.
