San Jose Sharks signed Joe Thornton (1 Year / $2,000,000 AAV)
Wish they'd sign Marleau too, but at least they have this. That's where he belongs.
Contract's quite reasonable too. He's lost a step (like any player at 40), but still produces solid numbers.

Arizona Coyotes signed Clayton Keller (8 Years / $7,150,000 AAV)
This could end up being quite good in the latter half of the contract, but I think it's very risky. Very small sample size that's decent, but not great so far.
You'd think taking a step back in your sophomore season before becoming a RFA would reduce the amount you get...

Carolina Hurricanes signed Chase Priskie (2 Years / $1,775,000 AAV)
Good for the Canes, of course, but can't imagine why he would agree to this if he doesn't think they'll trade a RD.
They certainly could, but I wouldn't think any of them would garner as much value as they already have for this organization.

St. Louis Blues signed Joel Edmundson (1 Year / $3,100,000 AAV)
Definitely got awarded more than he's earned from last season. Much prefer Gunnarsson's 1.75M over this, as he's far more responsible with the puck.

New Jersey Devils signed Will Butcher (3 Years / $3,733,333 AAV)
I'm also glad that, if they had to sign a contract that brings him into UFA to get a fair AAV, that they didn't sign him to too many years. I've liked his game so far, but he's a 2nd/3rd pairing guy with only 2 years under his belt so far.

Would've preferred 2 years, but the AAV is decent. He likely slots in the 3rd pairing for now, but he could slot into the 2nd sometime (especially depending on what they do with Vatanen next year).
Now looks like they've got their D all sorted. Might look something like:
Greene - Subban
Vatanen - Severson
Butcher - Carrick
Smith - Mueller - Smith may end up slotting into the 3rd over Carrick, depending on his development.

(TBL/OTT) - Callahan and 2020 5th for Condon and 2020 6th round pick
This has Big Melnyk Energy all over it.
I marked this as a Fair Deal in that I don't think either team really wins? Ottawa should have asked for more than moving from high 6th to low 5th, and Tampa Bay really doesn't need another goalie of Condon's caliber right now.
I guess Tampa wins if they flip Condon?

New Jersey Devils signed Nikita Gusev (2 Years / $4,500,000 AAV)
Excellent deal overall. Minimal risk for a team with their cap space, and this is yet another step toward proving to Hall they intend to be contenders sooner rather than later.
The AAV may look high for a guy who hasn't played in the NHL, but he's been one of the more dominant players in the next-best league for a few years now.
If he plays up to the hype, this'll be fantastic. If he doesn't, it's a short term contract that isn't won't interfere with resigning their important players. Low risk, high reward, pretty good!

(TOR/STL) - Borgman for Schmaltz
Kind of feels like Toronto just made a swap to trade a depth LD for a depth RD, where they had fewer options, giving up a little bit of upside to do so.
St. Louis therefore wins, but I'd guess Toronto knew that when they made the trade.

Washington Capitals signed Christian Djoos (1 Year / $1,250,000 AAV)
So did the arbitrator know you don't necessarily have to choose one of the two figures presented? Can't imagine Djoos' side asked for more than this.
Still, they'll revisit things next year.

Poor word choice on my part, should have used "selection" rather than usage. He was put into some pretty good situations, but got scratched too often (besides '16-'17) for some arguably less effective choices.

Nashville Predators signed Colton Sissons (7 Years / $2,857,143 AAV)
I'm not so sure about this one. The AAV is nice for a guy they can play anywhere on the 3rd/4th, but 7 years for a bottom half guy is a bit puzzling. If he loses a step 2-3 years into the contract, they're on the hook for a while for a guy who may be a liability. If they'd signed him to 3-4, and then resigned him after, I don't think the AAV would be all that much higher if he's still playing bottom half. Feels like unnecessary risk for a guy who's not crucial to the team's success. That said, wouldn't be surprised if they get good years out of him for most of his prime.
As far as the Tanev contract comparison goes, yeah, it's clearly better, but Tanev's is one of the worst this free agency, so the bar is pretty low.
Also, the way the salary is divided up per year is so oddly specific, which is pretty fun.

Not a big overpay considering the arbitration. It'll look quite good if he can play year-round like he did in the playoffs.

31.7M for the Rangers D before even signing DeAngelo... This team really struggles with signing D to good contracts.

Kind of agree, though as far as I see it, it'll depend on their plans with Mueller. Either way, Carrick's fitting in at the 6-7 spot.

Low risk, I think they'll give him a shot as their RD on the 3rd pairing. Hopefully he'll benefit from some more favourable usage than he got in Toronto.

Decent price for some solid supplementary scoring. The short term makes this good, not great.
