(WSH/CAR) - Kuznetsov for 2025 3rd (CAR)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>BCAPP</b></div><div>Can someone who follows Carolina explain the fit to me here? Ignoring all the uniqueness of the situation (I think it's a reasonable gamble for a mid pick for his upside if a team trusts its player leadership group to insulate from any such issues), but it seems an odd fit on the ice
I don't watch Carolina beyond when they play teams I do watch so I may just be missing something, but it seems to me they have a #1c in aho, then 3 top 9 C's already in Staal, Drury, and KK. Plus my understanding is Necas is at least comfortable at c and maybe Jarvis too. So why are they of all teams acquiring him?</div></div>
I can see the logic here for Carolina. They haven’t had a good #2 center since Trocheck left. They actually planned for that by acquiring Kotkaniemi and grooming him to step into that role when the time came, but he’s regressed after a strong start this season, and he’s back on the fourth line. Jack Drury is centering the second line now, but it’s his first full season and he’s still developing. Not ideal for a cup contender. Jordan Staal is more cut out for a third-line role at this stage in his career, and that’s where they want to keep him. Necas and Jarvis seem better suited to the wing.
I think Kuznetsov would be worth taking a chance on if he was a pending UFA. The idea of him setting up Guentzel so Svechnikov can stay with Aho sounds intriguing, but I don’t like the commitment to a full season at almost $4M cap hit with all the expiring contracts Carolina has. That’s money they might have been able to use to extend Skjei, Pesce or Teravainen. A buyout would save $1M of that and push another $1M out to 2025-26, but that’s when Slavin’s next contract would be kicking in. Even at 50% retained he seems more like a liability than an asset, so the draft pick was a gift to Washington. At best this should have been a “future considerations” trade, but losing the third-rounder isn’t going to hurt Carolina unless they want to give somebody an offer sheet this summer.
I’m not saying I expect him to fail. The fact that he realized he needed help and got it, and was humble enough to report to the minors after clearing waivers is a good sign. I’m just commenting on what I feel his trade value should have been today. I really hope he embraces the opportunity to get his life and career back on track. That would be a win for everybody.

Necas and Jarvis have never played center for them at the NHL level. It's possible Jarvis still might, at this point the ship has probably sailed on Necas at center for Rod.
The glass-half-empty view is that Drury/Staal/KK constitute 3 bottom-six centers rather than 3 top 9, as Drury/KK haven't proven offensive upside yet. The most successful offensive version using one of them was probably Svech/KK/Necas last year, but that line cratered when Svech got hurt - it wasn't being driven by the center.

What would these guys cost and are they available
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>BCAPP</b></div><div>Interesting. Why not? For the record I wanted him more than McCabe last year, but am happy enough with McCabe.
I'm surprised you say he's not available though. Seems like they'd appreciate assets as they are clearly rebuilding.</div></div>
The fire sale in Chicago is over. With the recent extensions given to Dickinson, Foligno and Mrazak, the Hawks are apparently looking to establish some continuity in the roster for the next two seasons with their veteran leadership group. Of which Murphy is a key guy. Hawks have accumulated a TON of prospects and draft capital already. Next season they need to start winning some games.
McCabe was expendable last year because of the depth the Hawks had at LD in their system. They had multiple ready-to-go replacements. The Hawks don't have that same depth at RD. If they trade Murphy, it leaves a hole they can't fill internally.
Add to that Murphy bought a new home in Chicago last summer, and he and his wife (who is from Chicago) just announced they are expecting their first child later this year.

I doubt Toronto would want to pay Seattle's asking price for their top pairing defenseman

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>futurehofer</b></div><div>First, he's at 19:57 with zero PP time so it's not like we're talking about someone getting 16 minutes. Second, he has another year left on a cheap contact when we still have one more year of cap hell left. We have no need to trade him so it will likely take somewhat of an overpayment to get him. To replace him in the lineup will likely cost us more so we would need a decent incentive to make our already complicated cap situation even worse.</div></div>
He also balances the top four very well, playing well with Faber so Brodin can anchor his own pairing. And he brings size and physicality on the back end, which is something we don't have much of. Overall solid, if unspectacular, top 4 guy signed cheap for one more year with very little reason to move him.

A top pairing RD for 7 years
One of Minten and Cowan definitely. I know Knies is untouchable but he'd be nice
A 1st and 2nd too
I would ask about Liligren and Timmins but neither have played a full 82 games so idk what there true value is

Anaheim Ducks signed Jamie Drysdale (3 Years / $2,300,000 AAV)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>tkecanuck341</b></div><div>Elliotte Friedman was on NHL radio a few days ago with an interesting take on the Jamie Drysdale situation in Anaheim.
Apparently Drysdale thought he was ready to go at the end of last season. The recovery from his injury was projected to be 4-6 months. Professional athletes generally come in on the lower end of that time frame since they're in such great physical shape. However, Verbeek told him that they were going to err on the side of caution and take the entire 6 months since the season was meaningless anyway. Drysdale was fine with it at the time.
However, what he didn't know (and more importantly wasn't told by Verbeek) was that since he played only 8 games last season and not 10, he doesn't qualify as a full-fledged RFA, but rather as a 10.2(c) player that is ineligible for offer sheets. Had he come back and played in the last two games of the season in April, he would have received the full RFA status.
Supposedly Drysdale wanted a 1-year small money "prove it" deal so he could ask for a bigger payday next season when the cap increases substantially and he had his full Group 2 RFA status. The Ducks used his limited 10.2(c) status against him in negotiations by not even putting a one-year deal on the table, and Drysdale (and other players) are apparently not very happy about it.</div></div>
If true, then Jamie should be "not very happy about" his agent.

Best team with certain criteria game
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>BCAPP</b></div><div>I guess I misunderstood your rules a bit. I tried to limit the number free agents but not none. Could probably flip 2 of beniers/power/Hayton/Necas for replacements and space I guess to sign the other 2?</div></div>
Yea I realized later on that in my post I didnt really lay out the rules all that well, the point was more to make a team that is good for next season but can also sustain the competitiveness for as long as possible.
Players like Slavin, Stephenson, Necas all make sense for this year, but all of them have huge pay bumps coming up making it unsustainable unless you're willing to lose cap elsewhere.
