Chicago Blackhawks signed Nick Foligno (2 Years / $4,500,000 AAV)
No it's a bad deal. I get they have lots of cap room, but this is two years down the road. Cap room has value. Spending it on veteran leadership fine, but this is shortsighted.

Man treliving sucks at his job. How was this a negotiation? I can't imagine Nylander asked for more. He gave him a full NMC too. Treliving sucks

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Affectionate_Side_64</b></div><div>Savard is good though, especially in the areas we need to address. We also know what type of players Rielly pairs best with and Savard is that. Anderson is not super overpaid at all; you could argue he's overpaid based on his current production, but he also has incredible value as a physical forechecker with great speed and finishing ability, a skillset that I think would make him look great on this team, especially in the playoffs. Monahan is great both ways and always has been, he's an ideal 3C with the potential to play further up the lineup.
This team is undoubtedly better IMO, and we'd only be spending assets that are very questionable to be game changers come playoff time, in a year where I feel we have our best shot at winning a cup. Appreciate the feedback, but we'll need to agree to disagree I think.</div></div>
Anderson is 29 and on his 8th NHL season. He should NOT be paid on potential. He is what he is. He has cracked 20 goals twice and 35 points once.
He is a 15-20 goal/30-35 point physical winger who is good on the forecheck. That is an average 3rd line winger. That's worth maybe 3 million.
That's ignoring he is scoring like a 4th liner this season.
He's super overpaid

That last one is weird.
Savard is not good. He does give us a different look we can use but he's a third pairing defenseman. We're stuck with him for 2 years
Anderson is super overpaid and signed for term. I would like him without his contract again to get a physical middle six forward with decent hands. But otherwise he's bottom 6. Given his contract I'd consider him negative value. Others may pay for him with retention for his style of play, not me.
I'd like Monahan as a pick up for 3 c. But he is likely more of an offensive 3c then defensive one. Still beggars cant be choosers. He'll likely get a 2nd. But hard to say given his history
In exchange your trading
Sammy negative value but pending Ufa
Robertson: why? He's young with offensive upside. And cheap.
Timmins: 3rd pairing or #7 defenseman but young and cheap. Not much value but useful
Jarnkrok: has more value to the Leafs than to others as he is significantly better than his contract. He is no world beater but he's a good middle six player who can play any position and paid under 3 mil
And a 2nd and depth picks
So weird...

As a Leafs fan this is not nearly enough. If Nylander were signed it may work as a start. But the Leafs would still have to add quality pieces. Than the Oilers could send back some okay players just to fill the Leafs emptied line up

He was good in the dot and physical. The Leafs will not replace him with the same quality. In the end it isn't a big deal as he played in the bottom of the lineup, but it was a loss simply as the gm f***Ed up the cap.

It's a good trade for the acquiring team as he's a fairly paid player who is physical, good in the dot and can play all three forward positions. But Vancouver seems a truly odd location

Minnesota Wild signed Marcus Foligno (4 Years / $4,000,000 AAV)
This would be a fair deal maybe for 26-29 as he is quite good defensively and physically (plus leadership) and is an okay at best third liner offensively (closer to a fourth liner many years). Offensively, outside of one year, his career high would be 26 points. His per 82 game average for his career is 13 g/30 points.
So adding in that this was signed a year early and he is on the downward trend of his career (especially for a physical player). Terrible

I get that. But the fact that the gm put himself in that spot where the only option to not lose someone is to only have 11/7 as an option is a fail.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>RipNasty</b></div><div>Why? We did this last season and it very quickly sorted itself out. It truly is astounding to me how many people in this world go about their days forgetting about yesterday and acting like there is no tomorrow. I appreciate living in the now but you won't know where you are going without knowing where you came from and you certainly aren't going to get far if you have no plans for tomorrow.</div></div>
They decided to do 11/7 as a coaching decision while having other players. That is a massive difference. If the leafs can only have 11/7 on their team due to cap issues, with no way to accrue cap over time (can't accrue cap while on LTIR), then the GM really messed up. **** happens and IFthe GM ended up in this situation because of unforseen events, so be it. But here he came in at the draft and controlled free agency where HE created a cap situation where he is a couple hundred K shy of having a 21st player and thus can't have a normal 12 forward and 6 defenseman on his roster, then he messed up. He couldn't have convinced a few players to take a 1-2% pay cut so we aren't in this situation? Was he that short sighted? And for a new guy on the job its a fairly large mess up that does not build confidence.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>RipNasty</b></div><div>Why? They can run an 11/7 lineup and be compliant. When someone gets hurt, you get an emergency call up. The only time you don't is if a player gets hurt in warmups or the day of the game. If someone is hurt longer than 10 games they go on LTIR and you have more flexibility.
So why does TO "have" to throw away Brodie or Jarnkrok so we can run worse players and have guys sitting in the press box?</div></div>
I will be quite upset if they go 11/7. That is a terrible solution and I would put Treliving on mighty thin ice, as he put himself in this spot.

Thread:

Gregor is not "not that much of a downgrade", or in other words he IS that much of a downgrade
Offense
Jarnkrok:
10 or more goals every year since 2015/2016 and a career high 20 last year
Career high 39 pts last year and averages about half a point per game
Averaged over an 82 game season, he scores 16 goals and 36 pts
Gregor
26 goals total in his career of 178 games, career high 10 last year
Career high 23 points 2 years ago, 17 last year maybe 0.3 ppg
Averaged over an 82 game season, he scores 12 goals and 23 pts
Other:
Jarnkrok
Can play C (did so mostly early in his career, not much recently)
Is still quite good in the dot
Is good defensively (not elite, but good, can be the responsible guy on a sheltered scoring line)
Is not particularly physical
Gregor
cannot play C
Is terrible defensively
Is physical
So essentially Gregor is exactly what you would expect from a 25 year old signing a PTO in September: he is a borderline NHLer. He comes with one improvement over Jarnkrok (Gregor is more physical). Otherwise he is significantly worse in every way. Jarnkrok is frankly a bargain. He is middle six forward who can complement skilled players and score when in that situation (but can't drive his own offense), and can play all three forward positions and be defensively responsible. He can be put anywhere in the line up and be useful. He does that for 2.1 million.

That's way too much for hanifin as a rental and honestly still feels rich even not as a rental. I guess the retention costs some. But all signs report to him not wanting to sign in Canada so hard pass
I'd rather just keep jarnkrok
