Trading Toffoli
Here’s some facts on the contract differences between Staal & Monahan for some civil dialogue.
Staal - 5.8M cap hit, 3.2M salary (NYR picked up SB)
Monahan - 6.375M, 6M salary
At the time Detroit needed bodies on defense so effectively take out a min replacement cost on Staal. Could the same be said about Monahan? Larkin, Suter, Veleno/Rasmussen, Stephens ehhh injuries do happen but at the same time it would be better to get a true 2C in FA for equivalent salary and push Suter to 3C.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>WhyWait</b></div><div>There is more done on the ice than point production. My statement is in no way a contradiction at all. Your narrow view of how to evaluate players and value shows a lot.
You'll have to show me where I even hinted that he was worth his contract. Go ahead, take all of the time that you need.
Marchand for Zucker, 2nd, 4th or go to some other team to try to get them to take him.</div></div>
What makes him worth the contract? I’ve pointed to offensive production and lack of pk duties so it’s not like he’s known to be in Selke contention. That is your contradiction, you say he’s worth it on the ice but he’s not been good offensively nor does he contribute with pk or is known to shutdown the other teams top guys.
Because evaluating a player based on what they bring offensively and defensively is a good evaluation method. I don’t care that he goes to church on the weekend or donated to the local dog park.
I’m not a Boston fan but rather pointing out your homerism of a comment & how illogical your arguments are. “He’s 34” & yet still hasn’t regressed so okay and it’s 2 seasons not 7-8. If you were to propose that trade I 100% guarantee people were to think you were trolling.

What does it Take
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Billy12Bob</b></div><div>As I said, I'm NOT talking about a QO. I'm talking about a player not wanting to accept a pay cut to sign a new contract.
Cirelli is being paid 7.2 million next season and I doubt very much that he'd be happy to extend that contract for less money. It's a factor that complicates the ability to get the player to sign long term with the team.
If you offer a player 6 million in salary it very much has a bearing on his willingness to accept that offer if his previous salary was higher or lower than that amount.</div></div>
I gave you a tangible example and what you’re arguing is illogical. Another basis which further solidified my point is that escrow clawback reduces over the course of his contract so if his contract was front loaded he’d see even less funds which explains the backloaded contract in addition to the QO as leverage. No one can argue against this from a CBA or business stand point.

Plus, the Penguins coaching staff really likes Zucker. In reality, not only do I not expect him to be traded, I don't believe that he has been, nor will be, shopped. He has had disappointing point production on the Pens, but they really like everything else about his game, on and off the ice.</div></div>
Provide one comparable trade with term returning significantly less since your offended by the offer.
Point production is on ice so your statement contradicts itself. It’s not like Zucker is playing PK but sure he can be a good locker room guy that doesn’t mean he’s worth the contract.

His current ranking doesn’t retroactively reflect his value from over 3 years ago. I’ve provided 2 listings from around that time that supports my initial statement.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>drambui</b></div><div>i also remember that stone was only willing to extend to a very limited amount of team, that might have reduced to possible return aswell. i think pasta's value is higher then strome, but i think a a very good propect and a first will be the price. Every high end player will only sign with a handful of teams for various reasons (eg family, location, taxes, etc). To assume Pasta will sign with every is a bit off to me. I’m just saying that some people are expecting an insane return in both directions (overpayment/underpayment) based on comparable trades without any support to their claim.

It doesn’t matter the last year of the actual cash flow on the contract but rather the AAV or amortized value. If you sign a contract tomorrow for 5 years that pays out 100k for the first 4 & 600k for the last year that doesn’t mean you’d expect 600k annually going forward. Further, it’s a non-negotiable as he’s an RFA and that QO is approved via CBA.

All good, that being said I think the whole ordeal with Stone was that Karlsson/Hoffman ordeal so acquiring assets for a faster rebuild. Would that apply with Boston in a deal involving shipping Pasta out? Probably, I’d be curious to see what he returns and I’d wager it’s closer to Stone’s return then some posts I’ve seen on here.

Cirelli has a salary of 7.2 millions this year. In order to extend him you'll have to offer more than that.
You want to give up 5 assets for him in Suter (our best defensive centre), Wallinder (a top prospect), two second round draft picks (in deep drafts), and a retention slot to boot (of which we only have two).
It would be much much cheaper to just sign Trocheck or Copp or someone else in the offseason.
I'll give you 100:1 odds on any bet over $10,000 that this trade doesn't happen.</div></div>
For players who are on expiring contracts that were signed after July 10, 2020:
The Qualifying Offer is limited to 120% of their previous contracts annual average (AAV)

No that 2018 draft included those defensive prospects and Brannstrom was traded in Feb 2019. I merely grabbed that link since it was the first in a search. Here’s probably the most accurate for timing & a reflection of an overall listing of top 50 after looking at the list (although I’m shocked @ Dobsons ranking since he carried his team in the playoffs).

He was rated in that 20-50 rankings during the time of trade. I followed him somewhat close since I’ve been a VGK fan (local) and I don’t ever recall any analyst calling him a blue chipper. He was a solid offensive defensemen but at the same the upcoming draft had guys like Hughes, Dobson, Bouchard, Boqvist, and Smith that immediately jumped him in any rankings.

When was the last time a player like Pasta was traded with one year left on their contract? Mark Stone comes to mind but that was at the TDL if I remember correctly & then immediately signed extension.
The return there was Brannstrom, 2nd rounder, & Oscar Lindberg.

Are you more on the side of traiding the guys who are 25 or older for high draft picks/prospects and then building around Seider, Raymond, Edvinsson...etc.
Or do you think Wings should really start to improve the team and go for it?
There seems to be 2 types of Wings fans:tearsofjoy</div></div>
I’m in between those. I don’t think you should have a team of youngster but at the same time only acquiring core guys that fit your window & trading assets in the final year if they don’t fit the criteria I just mentioned. We’re lacking LD & C in the top 4 & 6 respectively. I don’t want to put a bandaid in there but rather build organically. The problem is every team is improving to a certain extent so sometimes it isn’t a linear growth in the standings when rebuilding

That’s the only season he shot over 13% though. Prior to that he hovered in that 10-10.5% range with outliers like 13% or 5% which is why the aggregated total is a better indication. I wouldn’t bank on him having enough 13% season based on the prior samples but there’s always a possibility based on line mates, offensive scheme, etc. I could see his contract worth it if he defies Mother Nature and has linemates with some good/great chemistry. I think it’s also worth noting a contributing player being overpaid isn’t the worst thing if you’re not near the ceiling cap for the duration of that contract. Could that be problematic post Wright ELC sure.
