<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MelonVK</b></div><div>Put yourself in Edmonton's shoes. What do you do with those pieces? Why would Montreals spare parts have more value in Edmonton? Why would you give up actual useful players for them? Also nothing to replace either RNH or Talbot with. That's an awful trade with the pens aswell. Patches is probably a top 10 winger in this league making 4.5 mil, Määttä isn't even worth his contract, I wouldn't trade Juulsen alone for him if I was MTL. Why would Dallas pay a first for Paul Byron, a forward you can hardly fit in your own lineup, while they are better at forward? To get rid of Spezza so they can sign.. Oh wait there are no free agents left this year and his contract expires after this season.

You can't, for one second, have put yourself in the shoes of the other team in any of the trades. Except possibly the Pittsburgh one, but again - why would you ever.. I can't handle **** like this</div></div>

Thank you so much for the kind words!

I'm not going to argue with you or make melodramatic statements. I'll simply give you the thoughts behind my post.

Maatta is a talented young player that could benefit form playing with Shea Weber. Juulsen is more expendable to Montreal being on the right side.

Believe it or not, Paul Byron is tied for 32nd spot among all forwards in goal scoring when excluding power play goals the past two seasons. He has 40 and only 31 forwards have more non-PP goals in a 31 team league. That makes him a guy who can easily play on the top two lines of a playoff team (48 top line forwards on 16 playoff teams). His renowned speed breaks games from time to time. Montreal had no problem fitting him in the lineup, he never sat out once. It's just that he is so versatile that his role would change depending on the club's needs, but whatever was asked of him, he did super-well. GMs know this. A Byron re-signed for 2 years with production like his, at under $3M, is a valuable contract. And Spezza has negative trade value. Getting rid of his contract allows Dallas to move on Karlsson or do other things with their space.

Edmonton is getting more than spare parts. Lernout has made steady progress and can be a reliable bottom pairing guy very soon. Scherbak is a first-round pick, still on ELC, with offensive talent and his potential is well known to GMs. Talbot is way more expensive than Niemi, while Lindgren is more NHL ready than Skinner, so when the year is over, Edmonton has a guy who can play in the league, while the Habs take on the bigger salaries in this deal BY FAR.
