Zegras
Right now, Laine for Zegras is a laughable trade, but I really am curious as to what Laine's value is.
He's a 0.80 P/GP player, but he also hasn't played a full 82 game season since 18-19, and counts a significant $8.7M against the cap.
I believe in him and think he's a good player, but am I wrong to think that right now a trade for him caps at a 3rd round pick because of the contract and recent play (lack of play)?

Zegras
It makes more sense to trade them all separately. Fair value right now seems to be:
Henrique with retention = at least 1st and 3rd/4th in this market
Vatrano with retention = 1st and 2nd/3rd
Zegras = at least Top prospect + 1st/2nd (better or similar to the Gauthier package)
For Henrique, Vatrano and Zegras that would be <strong>AT LEAST</strong> 2024 1st, 2025 1st, 2026 1st, 2026 3rd, 2024 4th and Perreault/Othmann.
Even then, I still think the Rangers may have to add (as all those 1sts would be late) without taking the bad contract of Goodrow.

If everything goes right, I see Holtz's ceiling as a 2nd line RW. Foote's ceiling as a 3rd line LW. Willman is a career AHLer. Don't know how much a 25' 2nd gives.
The Ducks prospect pipeline has plenty of middle-six players. At this point it's about quality, not quantity.

DUCKS GM
The most interesting part of this is how many people are vehemently opposed to give up anything in order to get rid of players that score at a 0.3 P/GP pace who are signed to awful contracts for at least 1 or more seasons.
Goodrow, Johansen and Faksa have negative value. It takes assets to get rid of players who have negative value.

Because that bottom six forward plays a critical position at center and is slated to finish the season with 40 more points than Kakko.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>GolfBall</b></div><div>Not in addition to Nylander to Sharks or Murray to Ducks or whoever has value.</div></div>
Sorry to break it to you, but Murray doesn't have much value. It would actually <strong>cost</strong> Toronto to get rid of his $4.6M.
But if you expect a 3rd party team to retain $4M for 4 years, you would be looking at Toronto having to give them multiple 1st round picks.

Popped this in your other ACGM, but look at Marleau's cap dump trade from Toronto to Carolina where $6.25M for 1 year cost a 1st and a 7th.
I think $16M of retention on Karlsson would cost at least 2 1st round picks.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>GolfBall</b></div><div>I could see adding 1 1st, beyond that no.</div></div>
The question of how much it costs to dump salary made me look for comparables.
One relevant trade I found was when Marleau was traded from Toronto to Carolina before the 2019 season. He was subsequently bought out by Carolina.
To get rid of Marleau's 6.25M cap hit for 1 year, it cost a 1st and a 7th. So for any team to retain $4Mx4 (16M total), I think the equivalent value is ~2.5 1st round picks.

I'm not exactly sure the draft pick value of $4M retained over 4 years is, but I'm fairly certain that it's going to be significantly more than a 3rd and a 7th. Has anyone done calculations for this sort of thing?

My thoughts on a Gibson trade
I think it will serve the team best if Verbeek puts a hold then revisits a trade at or near the trade deadline.
He's going to have a new coach, new system and revamped defense. It wasn't long ago that he was an all-star that carried a flawed team to near the top of the Pacific standings in 2022.
Come the trade deadline, if he's doing well there may be a team desperate for an upgrade in net. If Gibson falters again, then Verbeek can look to sell low after Dostal develops with more reps.

32 points in 69 games at a $5.5M cap hit with a M-NTC for the next 4 years.
That's the kind of contract and production that definitely would require retention and adding assets to trade.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>GiggywithGibby</b></div><div>The 7.5m real salary is kind of a downer TBH.</div></div>
I had to double check and wow, they really structured Brodie's contract to make him less tradeable (Modified NTC but a high salary).
But two things I hope Verbeek is paying attention to:
Fowler showed last season that he's a goddamn versatile horse and he put up the most points of his career being paired with like 10 different people. All he needs is someone half reliable to do really well (Brodie is great, Myers is good).
After last season, Drysdale needs to get his development back on track and the 2nd pairing would be the best place for that. But I have a feeling Verbeek might bring in a rental instead of a UFA for his partner (Dillon, Forbort, etc.). Graves would be good, but damn if the team has too many middle LHD and LW on the roster and in the pipeline.

Goodrow may be overpaid by $2 million, but it's a manageable cap hit.

Best part about that first line is that any other team could just roll out a bunch of 200+ lb dudes and knock all the floppy hair off their heads.
They're all great players, but they're better off teaming up to watch F1.
