3rd or 4th in conference depending on progression from Dobson/Romanov and staying relatively healthy

Some of the other teams around them (Sabres, Ottawa, Wings) should be better through development and the additions made. They still have a reasonably solid team, but their forward group doesn’t really scare anyone. I see around 11-12 in the conference being most likely.</div></div>
Hey birdbrain... they finished 7th in the conference last year and now have a full year of Horvat, Engvall, No bailey and a healthy Barzal...

I meant to tag the other idi0t with the Sabres comment you dimwit... Bo brought the Islanders to the playoffs last year. A full season of Bo and Barzal will be great and Engvall-nelson-palmeri line was literally one of the best lines in the NHL last season. I love Beau, but he is bad defensively and not nearly the player Bo is. You are a complete dimwit

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Juiceman</b></div><div>Wow you are so deluded that you resort to calling me a **** when you don’t even know what re-tool is. The Isles didn’t re-tool. They went all in with the limited assets and cap space they have and made a mediocre bubble team that will get carried by Sorokin until he eventually cannot carry them anymore. This team is one of the oldest in the league. You did not get younger, you did not gain any futures, and this team is still not competitive in the Metro</div></div>
I called you that because you are one… they were competitive enough to make the playoffs last year without Matthew Barzal. They added 2 top 6 forwards and are hoping for progression from their young Dmen.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Juiceman</b></div><div>I like Horvat a lot, but he is a career 2C that is good for 30 goals, 60 points. He is also NOT a 2 way forward. His defensive game is below average and only gets a good reputation because he is good at faceoffs and was forced into a shutdown role. Also, the Isles literally have one of the oldest rosters in the league. That doesn’t fit my narrative, that is a straight up fact. You conveniently left out all of the old players rotting away on your roster. Also wtf are you even talking about. I don’t even cheer for the Sabres 😂</div></div>
I left out cal Clutterbuck, Matt Martin, and Varlamov (the oldest players on the team) because they are not part of the core and are 4th line players/backups… the islanders core isn’t even old. I just listed the players that are signed to long term deals…

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Juiceman</b></div><div>3rd line wingers are not the guys you lock up for 7 years. Same with 30 year old 3rd pairing defensemen. You give those guys 4 years max. The Islanders are already old and did nothing to get younger. How do you even consider this a re-tool?</div></div>
Horvat would've signed for more as a UFA and is a phenomenal 2way forward/ goal scorer. Engvall was a top 6 forward with the islanders and played great last season with nelson and palmeri. If he grows on that which Lou is banking on that contract will be looked at as a steal. Mayfield while the term is too long signed for less AAV so it is what it is. Varlamov also got more term to get lower AAV. Additionally, The Islanders really arent very old-- its a false narrative that is skewed by their 4th line/role players/backup goalie. Islanders core and their ages:
Barzal 26, Horvat 28, Nelson 31, Pageau 30, Engvall 27, Pulock 28, Pelech 28, Dobson 23, Romanov 23, Aho 27, Mayfield 30, Wahlstrom 23, Lee 33, Fasching 27, Sorokin 27
That core doesn't look too old to me??? But, that wouldn't fit your narrative!!
Then again your team is the Sabres who are constantly the youngest team in the league and consistently underperform and miss the playoffs... Hey at least "Buffalo's Savior" Jack Eichel Won a cup!!! :tearsofjoy :tearsofjoy :tearsofjoy :tearsofjoy

Locked up Engvall to a deal at least $1 Million less in AAV, locked up a top tier 3rd pair defensman, and locked up a top 3 Goalie in the NHL for the next 8 years on a very fair deal. What are you laughing about??

I'm very happy in Lou turning this franchise around. Islanders were the joke of the league and were going to move to Kansas City he has turned the team into making the playoffs every year and competing. This is the best offensive forward group they have had in a long time

They literally made the playoffs last year in that same "division/conference" with Barzal out for 2 months and wahlstrom out for the year. Palmeri and pelech also missed a lot of the season... With them healthy and additions to Horvat, Engvall and progression from dobson and romonav the sky is the limit with this team

I think he did a great job this offseason... Islanders will be in contention by the trade deadline and at that point they will have accrued cap space and will make a move for either a LHD and/or another playmaker. This team is more than good enough to compete and probably the best forward group the Islanders have had in decades

Yeah no crap they lost on the deal... They got screwed over. They were hoping to sign Debrincat long term, instead he wanted to play for his hometown team and he was an RFA so he had a say in where he wanted to go. Ottawa made good out of a bad situation. It wasn't the best trade but at least they still got assets for him

Zadina isn't getting signed anywhere to play on the 1st line. He will be signed to fight for his spot and put him in a position to develop his untapped potential which Islanders can give him that opportunity.

He knows how to play, but Lane did his best to minimize the entire d cores effectiveness last season. Aho and Dobson weren’t great together because it limited the amount of time Dobson carried the puck. Romanov couldn’t play with Mayfield because neither player is a high end puck carrier.
It’s just not that complicated. Don’t blame the kids for being put in bad situations. Dobson and Romanov both benefited from new d partners in the playoffs. Meanwhile Aho was phenomenal with mayfield.</div></div>
You had me agreeing until the end... Dobson didn't benefit from anything in the playoffs. That was one of if not the worst playoff series performance I have ever witnessed. With that being said I do think Lane was terrible last year and did nobody any favors

We must've been watching different hockey games last year. Mayfield is a high end 3rd pair defensman who kills penalties and he got paid to be that (he didnt have a great season last year, part of that is due to having a bad d partner). Dobson gets top PP minutes and is expected to be a top 4 dman-- he is nothing of that sort- he's a developmental 3rd pair dman who belongs on PP2 playing about 15 minutes a game

Potential Moves
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>dannibalcorpse</b></div><div>I'll preface this by saying that Hanifin is a very good player who would make the Islanders better, BUT...I wouldn't do this. It's a decent bundle of assets to give up for a guy that almost definitely walks next summer, considering that the Isles have less than $5M in cap space for summer 2024 (and that's assuming a jump to $87.5M in the cap.)
At this point, the roster basically is what it is for this year and next. I think any deadline rental deals are going to be just that - rentals that you're fine with letting walk because the acquisition cost wasn't too high.</div></div>
I didn't realize they would have so little money next season still with cap increase. In reality I really think they need an upgrade over Aho. If we don't upgrade D at all I don't see the Islanders as serious contenders (unless Dobson has a complete 360 turnaround from last season). With that being said I think this is the best offensive lineup theyve had in decades.
