<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>mikearky</b></div><div>You have two problems with your trade. One no goalies bring back a 1st round pick, even one that is a promising goalie. and you are no getting a top/10 pick for a goalie. So you have Burkakovsky for Svechnikov, which is the Wings favor slightly. But the biggest problem you are cap dumping two players that you need to get rid of too get your team under the cap ES is 2 years younger, makes less than a 3rd less and would have made he club if not for an injury before the seson. 2nd Grub is due a big raise and has not proven he can be a #1 goalie.

You state that Howard sucks, he is no Dryden but he needs players in front of him. He has a horrible defense and needs better defense which we hope to draft with the 6th pick. Thy are in a rebuild and trading a high pick for players not considered the teams best players when they have cap problems is not the the best road map to build a competitive team.</div></div>

where to start with this one. No goalie gets traded for a first. Well, ya couldn't be more wrong. The caps even recently traded one (Semyon Varlamov) precisely for a first round pick. Even more recently Stepan and Antti Raanta were traded for a very promising young defenseman (Anthony Deangelo) and the #7 overall pick. This trade is set up similarly, and I even think there is more value in the trade I have here than what the rangers sent the coyotes. First round picks for goalies happen all the time. 2nd: Burakovsky for Svechnikov is "slightly" favoring the wings? Ummmmm, Burakovsky is a .5 ppg player in the NHL. Svechnikov (as of late) is not even a .5 ppg player in the AHL. He's only registered 4 points in the NHL. Don't even try to say that Svechnikov is younger, and hence has increased value (he's only 1.5 years younger). To my tally, that's a big advantage to detroit. A top 6 player for a risky prospect who is trending downwards.

You say Grub is due for a big raise but say he has not proven he can be a #1 goalie. He'll get a raise because he's the 2nd string goalie that has shown he is most ready for a starting role. That's why he'll get a raise. He has been very good in the times he has shown and has had a career progression very similar to Raanta's.

It's also not a "cap dump" as you call it. Sending an RFA and a young player at a 3m cap hit is not a "cap dump." Maybe is burakovsky was 36 and make 6m a year, but he's not.

Your comment that DET needs defense is well received and I think that is fair. It works both ways tho. If you have great defense but your goalie is swiss cheese, that's just as problematic. So DET also needs a goalie just as badly. DET does not have any real goalies in the pipeline and will need a goalie at some point. Grub is available and an RFA which gives DET the advantage to get him on a cap friendly contract, so its right time right place for DET and Grubi.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Eli</b></div><div>Not sure which side you're saying has the chance, but I like the idea of trading a prospect more than a player, from a Caps fan. Burakovsky and Johansen for a great young goal scorer works better for Washington, because Orlov, Djoos, Kempny, Jerabek and Orpik are enough left defensemen to get through next season.

On the other hand, this Nylnder's career high in even strength goals is as many as Brett Connolly has so far this season, and four less than Burakovsky's career high in even strength goals. Nylander gets a lot more ice time than either, and way more power play time, so his totals come out higher, but he's playing 62% offensive zone starts, mostly with an elite playmaking center. I'm not really sure he's as good as Burakovsky, and his contract in this hypothetical scenario is as high as both of theirs next year, so that's bad for the Caps, unless they really think neither Burakovsky nor Wilson could score nine power play goals in a season on the top unit. I think they each could, and just have to earn a chance.

Yeah, the Oilers would love to get Madison Bowey, but is Puljujarvi really enough of a return? Hard to say until free agency shakes out, but I've got Bowey pencilled in on the Caps' top power play unit for the next seven years. I don't see Benning filling that role the same way. Puljujarvi was 4th overall pick, but he's too young to really judge yet. He has twelve goals this year. It's his career high. Give Bowey a spot on the Caps' top power play unit, and I think he matches that. Of course, Puljujrvi keeps improving, but... does he give the Caps better chance to win the Cup next year than having backup goalie better than some starters? Pass again.</div></div>

First off and above all: I really appreciate the well thought out response. So many people on here give short little comments like "no" or "lol" so I really appreciate you taking the time to make a coherent point(s).

1) I personally think trading a prospect is no bueno especially considering the caps current situation. We have an incredibly depleted prospect pool, while somewhat deep a defense, a first round prospect who is progressing well would not be good to trade at this point. The caps need to keep onto their prospect depth. Look at what Nylander has been able to do v what burakovsky has done. I see what ur saying about Nylander being with an elite center, but burakovsky has had chances again and again with elite centers like kuzy and backy. Yes, Burk has had injuries but even if he played full seasons he would be well short of Nylander's totals. Nylander is blossoming into an elite player in his own right. He has incredible chemistry with Backstrom (as displayed in the WC). Pairing Nylander with Backstroke would maximize his talent and balloon his point totals. This guy plays with so much poise and is well on his way to becoming a dominant player. Burakovsky is older and also further away from reaching the levels of dominance than Nylander is. Burky has been incredibly streaky ever since he got in the league. While he could turn it around and find some consistency, the younger Nylander is already just a better player. Furthermore, Tom Wilson might be playing at his ceiling and while I hope he doesn't decline, I just feel like a player like him will have a rough time adapting to the ever newer faster and less physical game. I feel like he might end up like a patrick maroon, whose game becomes obsolete even tho proven point producers on top lines. I just feel like we could trade wilson while his value is at its height.

2) And now to address your points on Madison Bowey. I don't think there is any scenario in the next 7 years where Bowey gets even a whiff of power play opportunities. Djoos is offensively superior in almost every way shape or form and will absolutely assume power play responsibilities in the near future. I actually think Bowey is pretty crappy as a player in general and think that trading him now could once again maximize value as teams might still see a young player who can be developed. I think Bowey def can improve, but let's be real, he's got a lot of work to do before he becomes a consistent top 4 (or even power play) guy. I don't think he will ever become a top defender, but hey, i'd love to be proved wrong. Bowey makes a ton of bonehead plays, even beyond just rookie growing pains. Some growing pains are healthy, but the frequency of Bowey's are all too noticeable. Watch any board battle he gets into with a guy. He loses the battle frequently because he either just rushes into the boards and allows the guy to squirm out or he just totally misplays it and the dude walks out the other side. He's been caught time and time again behind Holtby's net or just out of position for that matter. He plays like a rookie and I just have not seen that many flashes, besides the one dope stretch pass to stephenson on his breakaway goal, to warrant saying that he could be really good down the road. He does have a good slapshot but doesn't really do much with it (misses the net or shoots right into the goalie's logo). He's sorta consistently a non-factor every game. He hasn't gotten a goal and almost all his points are secondary assists where he gets a point solely for just being on the ice. He's not the most mobile guy and frequently plays the puck into open spaces within our own zone where the opposing team frequently gets the puck again and continues their onslaught. He has great physicality and size, but at some point that can only get you so far...

3) Puljuajarvi is 19 and has shown flashes of brilliance. Talbot has regressed incredibly and they are in need of a promising goalie. Gruby would provide that and we might be able to squeeze an incredibly promising talent like puljujarvi out of them. I think that trade would be incredible for the caps if they could get it done.

All that being said...I do appreciate you engaging in a dialogue as opposed to some people on here who are just cocky assholes.

I'd also welcome a response and any disagreement.

and anyone that thinks bowey isnt good doesnt watch the caps play................they pairing him w orlov for a few shifts and he looked amazing the kid can play he just is playing w the nhls worst player......look at schmidt orpik only looked good bc he was playing with a top pairing guy last season</div></div>
