Reilly Smith and Theodore were trades as well. They happened around the expansion draft (and inarguably because of the expansion draft) but they weren't actually drafted.

Should leafs get compensation?
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>fangm</b></div><div>I saw this discussion on a Leafs forum but feel it would be better here with people from all backgrounds.
With Rodion passing away earlier today the Leafs lost a 1st round pick.
If Rodion hadn't been signed to an ELC then the Leafs would have got a 2025 1st round pick as compensation (last pick of the 1st round #33).
Since Dubas singed him and had him on the NHL roster so that his family could collect an NHL paycheck (Leafs have paid him over $1M despite him never playing an AHL or NHL game) the Leafs don't qualify for compensation.
Do you think the league should make an exception given the circumstances and compensate the Leafs?</div></div>
No.

The Knights ran through the Jets, the Oilers, and the Stars before stacking up against the best the east had to offer. A bit odd that the division that was trashed all year as being "garbage" takes the cup home.
I'm not a fan of the knights, but the schadenfreude from all the super teams loosing to Florida, only for Florida to get completely exposed by a Pacific division team in the finals, is delectable.
Well done knights, you got over the hill. Watch out for CBJ next season, I think theyre following the same recipe.</div></div>
Not sure about "best the east has to offer". Florida got the last playoff spot by a single point. They were the hottest team in the east meaning they were the best *at the time*, but it also meant they had some pretty big deficiencies that could be exploited as well. Make of that what you will.

Both players were severely injured at the time and needed surgery.
3) Praising those that traded you away is exactly what you'd say as a means of lip service.
4) Which 5 teams do you think are on Tuch's no-trade list?</div></div>
1) Who are you to say what players "should" have done. The point was that players are willing to re-sign with teams that have traded them. Happens all the time.
2) I'm not sure what your point is here.
3) You're just wrong on this. PR spin is one thing; it doesn't necessitate going as far as Tuch went.
4) I have no idea and neither do you. Probably the teams he doesn't want to play for and the places he doesn't want to be in.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>sensonfire</b></div><div>1. Players generally don't want to go back to the team that traded them away.
Because if they did, they might be traded away yet again.
2. Being traded is one of the most miserable experiences for any athlete in professional sport.
It means they aren't wanted by their former team anymore.
3. What you just quoted from Alex Tuch is lip service and he was coached to say the things he said.
It's public relations 101 and every professional athlete from every major league sports team does it.</div></div>
1) Players re-sign with teams that have traded them all the time.
2) Being traded away <em>can </em>mean you aren't wanted. That's clearly not the case with Tuch. In both situations he was moved specifically because he was such a valuable asset.
3) There's a difference between lip service to the fans and going out of your way to praise management of an organization. (the management that made the trade, mind you)

Why Minny and Vegas? I know those organizations owned his rights previously but he didn't leave on bad terms and neither team wanted to see him go. Minnesota traded him for expansion protection considerations and Vegas traded him as the big prize in a swap for a superstar they were chasing.

Which team has the best U24 Defensive Corps?
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>A_Habs_fan</b></div><div>Well my problem with Buffalo was that I had no idea why Lyckasen and Komarov are and I’m not sure if Johnson signs, as a Sabres fan, I’m sure you know a lot more about that than I do, I do love Mattias Samuelsson and of course Power and Dahlin are both amazing though. For CBJ, I think Boqvist, Jiricek both can become elite, I think Mateychuk is a future 1st pair D, Ceulemans is a future very good 2nd pair guy, Svozil can be a decent 2nd pair guy and Knazko can become a #4. CBJ has just happened to assemble a good group of D prospects who I all liked and know a lot about.</div></div>
I don't have much first-hand knowledge of Komarov and Lyckasen either, tbh. I think Euro-based prospects tend to fall under the radar a lot unless they're the truly ELITE. But from what I've heard/read they're probably B-prospects: Top 4 potential but possibility they may never make it to the NHL.
Johnson is a tough one: I haven't seen any rumors one way or the other about whether he'll sign, but I think the prevailing thought is that it's not a good sign that he hasn't put ink to paper yet.
I agree that there is a lot of potential in the Blue Jacket's ranks, but I think people tend to put too much weight behind potential and don't account for the fact that a lot of guys just simply never hit their ceiling. I also learned that the hard way as a Sabres fan.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>A_Habs_fan</b></div><div>I'm 100% in the minority but I'm a huge Mateychuk, Svozil, Ceulemans, Boqvist fan and Jiricek looks amazing, Knazko's decent so I'm going CBJ</div></div>
There's a lot of potential in CBJ, but Buffalo has an established franchise defenseman (Dahlin), a budding elite star (Power), a hugely underrated T4D stalwart (Samuelsson), a former 1st rounder on the bottom pair (Jokiharju), and some high ceiling prospects as well.
Granted Dahlin and Power were placed in their lap with 1st overall picks. And we'll see if Johnson signs. But I don't know how you could put any other stable in the same conversation as Buffalo right now.
And even if we're giving such huge weight to potential, New Jersey has it in bunches. I'd give them the nod over Columbus.

About half are working looking at. A couple of legit good prospects
<strong>1st round</strong>
Jay O'Brien (PHI) -- will not be signed by Flyers
Ryan Johnson (BUF) -- Has been talking to Sabres (am guessing they are trying to find a trade)
<strong>2nd round</strong>
Robert Mastrosimone (DET) -- has said he will test free agency
<strong>3rd round</strong>
John Farinacci (ARI) -- will not be signing in Arizona
<strong>4th round</strong>
Tyler Weiss (COL) -- used fifth year, still unsigned
Jack Gorniak (MTL) -- used fifth year, still unsigned
<strong>5th round</strong>
Harrison Blaisdell (WPG) -- ??
Owen Lindmark (FLA) -- probably returns to Wisconsin
<strong>6th round</strong>
Simon Kjellberg (NYR) -- ??
Ben Brinkman (DAL) -- used fifth year, still unsigned
Gavin Hain (PHI) -- used fifth year, still unsigned
Kevin Wall (CAR) -- expects to go pro but is still unsigned
<strong>7th round</strong>
Nick Leivermann (COL) -- used fifth year, still unsigned
Bryce Brodzinski (PHI) -- ??
Ryan O'Connell (TOR) -- used fifth year, still unsigned
Austin Wong (WPG) -- hasn't entered transfer portal and is from conference that doesn't allow 5th year
If they all made it to Aug 15th, these would be the guys likely getting pro deals
1. Ryan Johnson (BUF)
2. Robert Mastrosimone (DET)
3. John Farinacci (ARI)
4. Nick Leivermann (COL)
5. Jay O'Brien (PHI)

Ben Brinkman (DAL)
Tyler Weiss (COL)
Owen Lindmark (FLA)</div></div>
Thanks. This is great!
Is Weiss' rights still owned by Colorado? I know he's tied to them on Capfriendly but I've seen some articles from earlier the start of the year talking about him as a college free agent (maybe it was known or assumed he wouldn't be signing with the Avs).
Others not listed that I'm unsure of their status: Thiessen (VAN), Demin (CHI), Adams (DET), McCarthy (NJD), Romano (ARI), McFaul (BOS), Moe (WPG), Loheit (OTT).

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Cody_Eakin</b></div><div>What is the cutoff for the modern NHL? Orpik was on the cup team 5 years ago...
Plenty of active guys on recent good teams. Adam Pelech, Brandon Carlo, Ryan Lindgren, Siegenthaler, Brodin, Tanev, . Defensive d men are definitely not a dying breed lol.
Samuelsson has 15 points in 80 games for his career. 10-20 points a year is pretty much where he's at. Again we're paying him to be a shutdown partner for Dahlin not so he can rack up secondary assists on the PP.</div></div>
He's also really good at finding and placing outlet passes once the Sabres win back possession as well; which is a small/specific skill to have, but an important one.
For footy fans, think of a role like Makelele and how criminally underrated he was in his day.
