Possible Lines
I don’t think Robertson has shown enough to be an NHL regular yet, let alone throwing him into the top 6. Rather see him play on a more sheltered scoring line with Spezza. They should look to add Tatar and Ritchie by acquiring Kesler’s contract from the Ducks. Let Robertson develop more on the Marlies until he forces Leafs to call him up

The idea of Toronto being able to run just a 20 man roster through a full 82 game schedule is asinine.

And your defense got worse too</div></div>
Yes eliminating their most overrated defenseman that only looks okay when propped up with their best defenseman makes them worse. Muzzin can just as easily prop up Dermott, Sandin, even Liljegren as much as he did Holl. Forward lines can easily change,
Danault>Kerfoot, Goodrow>Engvall, Noesen and Nylander are a wash with Galchenyuk and Simmonds. Play Goodrow with Matthews and Marner as they just need a good forechecker to retrieve pucks and score some greasy goals around the net. Tavares and Nylander line up with little Nylander, see if he gets more confidence playing with big brother, no less a gamble than Vesey or Galchenyuk were, shut down third line of Danault, Hyman, & Mikheyev that could play against any top line in the league. Four player 4th line rotation of Spezza, Brooks, Thornton, & Noesen. Better team than last year and they were pretty good last year

Retool this offseason and comeback with a fresh start
I wouldn’t target Graves if looking for offensive defenseman. If can get Hall to come back for a little less, skip signing Palmieri and target Danault for somewhere in the 7-8 range. A 1/2 punch of Bergeron and Danault would be real tough on opposing teams to try and get scoring chances

Amirov and Robertson both look at least a year away from being ready for NHL. Think resigning Noesen or Simmonds would make more sense than Vesey at that price

Yeah I don’t think Dubas will move him as i don’t know if there is a way for them to actually win any Marner trade, unless they fooled the Pegulas and GM Adams to trade Eichel for him straight up on the basis of how little actual money left on Marners deal and them not wanting to completely start over again. But that to me seems unrealistic

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>A_K</b></div><div>I know some people will complain about marner's cap hit and poor playoffs but this would be an absolute no-brainer for stl if it were offered. Marner takes over for tarasenko who is a huge question mark; Walman or Perunovich take over for Dunn who is probably getting run out of town anyway (unwarranted); kostin takes over for sanford, brings more jam. IMO Leafs would be silly to give up an elite winger based on a few bad games. And if they need to trade him I'm sure they could do better than this.</div></div>
I debated on how much to try and get back without going overboard and my biggest reason for shedding Marners cap hit is to try and sign Hamilton.

What are you talking about cap minimum at 84? Caps staying flat for next few years at least which means the minimum is 60.2 and the ceiling is 81.5

You should just root for Buffalo then if you want to blow it up with new management, coaches, and players every 3 years. Reality is the first two years of this 5 year run of first round exits they overachieved, year 3 they pushed Boston to 7 without Kadri lost and Boston cruised to the finals before they were challenged by another team, last year they were bad and made coaching change mid season then covid flipped everything. This year they underachieved majorly by losing to Montreal but it still wasn’t a normal year or situation. It’s way too early to give up on this core group of forwards, unless someone comes with a can’t pass up offer.

Better part of a decade then since you want to argue semantics. It’s not like the Leafs core hasn’t changed over the last five seasons. Current core only been together for three seasons and two have been shortened by covid, Current coaching staff has never had one single full training camp. No one is denying they underperformed expectations but only reason to move one of the big 4 would be to move Marner out because covid screwed up that cap continuing to rise and that’s not that great of a reason just yet

Tavares has been with the club three years, two of them shortened with covid and wasn’t there for all but 10 minutes of this series. Muzzin has been there for less than 3 seasons.
Young Ovi played with Backstrom, Semin, Mike Green, and Fedorov. They weren’t exactly devoid of talented players

Holtby was there for 7 years when they won, Orlov 6, Carlson 9, Backstrom 11, Ovechkin 12. Kuznetsov and Wilson were both in there 5th. 6 current Leafs have been here for these 5 years and 4 of them were rookies that first surprise year they squeaked in to play the Caps, so it’s still very much a fair comparison

The front office has pretty much already cam out and said they big 4 are staying put. Obviously something could change their mind before next year though. Think they should see what teams expansion protection lists are and look to trade Rielly to Seattle for a couple guys they like and have them pick in the draft for them.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Dekes</b></div><div>Such a bad comparison washington did not have 5, 1st round/ play in series loses in a row. Tampa, Washington, Boston all those teams trusted their core and made deep playoff runs way faster then maple leafs. and even when they didnt go far their stars still perfomed. Marner has not scored in 18 consecutive playoff games, and matthews is not scoring at nearly the pace he should be, they need to switch their core up you will not find any success by making the little tweaks they do every year. The bottom 9 is different almost ever year yet they dont go any further in playoffs so maybe theres a problem in the top 6. Just because management does want to make changes doesnt mean the players wont wanna leave. Matthews and marner outta be tired of losing and with big stars like eichel, gaudreau, Seth jones, matthew tkachuk, etc being available for trade this would be the year for those guys to be traded because teams actually have assests to use towards aquiring one of those 2.</div></div>
How is it a bad comparison? It’s fairly apt one in my opinion. Washington may have got further than Toronto has so far but they failed to get past the second round for 10 years before they got to the final and on multiple occasions were the seeded higher and few times won presidents trophy as best in league. So unless you’re calling winning a single round a “deep run” Caps never went on a deep run before finally breaking through and winning.

You miss trading second round picks for 4 C’s? Since Kyle Dubas has been in charge the Leafs have drafted 7 defensemen in the 16 total picks the Leafs have made in that time. So he clearly has been drafting defensemen, maybe it’s possible that it just takes time for most defensemen to develop and mature

Focus on the D
Besides the fact Dubas said they aren’t moving Marner, adding Pietrangelo and Ekblad is overkill. Unless there was some sort of handshake agreement to have Leafs pay Panthers Ekblads bonus money for this season that he already had been given, the deal doesn’t have the cash vs cap difference to really the kind of savings they’re owner has been rumoured to want. Even then it’s basically a wash, with the exception to how much Marner gets paid out rest of this season

No trades and also didn’t sign any free agents. Paid Dermott and Mikheyev too much. D is thin, any injury back there would create massive problems, and would need more consistency from Dermott and hope Lehtonen is a stud right off the bat

Engvall played centre when he lined up with Spezza more often than not and I think Manny can help guys like Engvall, Kerfoot and in this case Barbashev improve in the faceoff department. Nobody really knows what Barabanov is going to be able to do in the NHL yet but idea with extra forwards is to rotate the 4th line depending on the team they’re playing. D core is far from perfect but banking on some internal growth from the younger guys and have space to change if need be. When healthy Muzzin and Holl were the go to shutdown pair so don’t see a reason to not pair them together again. I don’t really give a damn about handedness, didn’t seem to slow down Dallas or Vegas this year and Tampa’s left side is ridiculously better than their right side was.

Is Know there’s no guarantee Lily is ready but Lehtonen can play right side and bring Sandin up instead and use Ortuzzo to play against the more physical teams. Dermott has shown enough flashes to at least be given a shot next to Rielly and I think their styles of play match up well. And if all of that fails, there’s cap space accruing to make an upgrade
