Leafs 2020-21 From Within Scenario
All excellent points. I chose a year for Mikky assuming the team and he would want to have a redo to see how he does post-injury but a longer term would be ideal if they are both ready.
You led into what I am writing - I am building up from committed, to from within, to trade scenarios (writing now) so I think we are in general agreement haha. Engvall can easily move to left side if AJ is traded, that leave's Korshkov as an option, as I think you suggested. Lily definitely needs more time imo.

Leafs 2020-21 From Within Scenario
"From Within" looks at a 2020-21 scenario where the Leafs don't make any trades or free agent acquisitions this offseason beyond those currently signed with the Leafs. Instead, it tries to picture what the roster might look like with signings of key players.
I chose $85M for the salary cap based on the 1% inflator the NHLPA went with last season. It can range from $84M (0% inflator) to 88.2M (5% inflator).
The biggest uncertainty for me is the signing of Dermott, he could cost more, he could get more than a bridge deal, or he could be included in a trade to bolster the right side. I have him playing the right side next season.
Clifford is another wild card for me because of what he might demand as a FA.
This also assumes Mikheyev can return to his level of play after a serious wrist injury.
I have left a small buffer to deal with some of the estimates.
Comments more than welcome. I'm a little rusty at CF.

If Muzzin accepted that contract I'd be happy but I don't think his agent would like it. He's probably going to get closer to 6.

I want to see what Mikheyev, Kerfoot and Kapanen will do. I think Kapanen will fit in better with them.</div></div>
I agree. I am posting what Babcock will start with but Kapanen has not had that great a preseason on Tavares left side. I have been very impressed with Mikheyev so far.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>The issue with Sandin isn't so much the slide ELC, it's whether it is good enough to play 14 minutes every game for 82 games. Preseason is just preseason. Leafs have other vets who might have to proof they aren't NHL good enough in order for then Leafs take a chance on Sandin at least October 1st.
Marincin looked good last game. I still say he might be OK if given regular time. Right now he's my choice as the 3rd right side Dman.</div></div>
He still has a lot to prove against NHL competition over the remainder of the preseason. I just wrote a blog on Medium where I suggested that the most likely scenario is that he will get a taste of the NHL (under 10 games) and then head back to develop more on the Marlies. I see that Babcock issued his main roster for Sept 25 and the third pair is Sandin - Marincin. Let's see how they do.

Next Years 2020-21 Leafs Under Cap
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Random2152</b></div><div>Keep muzzin and Hyman lose barrie.
People are saying we are screwed when it is very easy if you actually look at it. Thanks for proving otherwise!</div></div>
Thanks. That's definitely an option because Jake Muzzin is seriously underrated and brings size and defensive chops to the team. I opted for Barrie because the Leafs need a mobile offensive threat on the right side more than anything to balance off Rielly on the left. I believe a rental will be more easily found on the left side, in Muzzin's slot as well. Doing it this way protects the 7 key forwards and 3 D. (Hyman and 4th D would be exposed to the Seattle draft).

Haha yeah, we run the league from Toronto, they should just accept it. Look forward to seeing some realistic roster projections here over coming days.

Yes but they won't be able to accumulate any daily cap savings so once D and H are back, they have to fit under unless they make some sort of trade.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>NR1203</b></div><div>Send one more guy down. 1 extra player.</div></div>
They have to do a little better than that, I think they may have to run with a minimum 20 man roster, because you need a buffer for IR situations, other player movements, and LTIR top up not exactly filling available LTIR on day 1.

Thanks but it is not really feasible due to Cap $ needed to cover player movements, IR, andthe fact that LTIR will not be perfectly filled to the brim on day 1 of the season (any gap will persist all season)

I am just not buying the $11M figure for Marner. I still think he will be lucky to get $9.5M.
As for the lineup, I see Nick Shore taking the 4C job and I don't see Trevor Moore being bumped out of the lineup.

There is offseason LTIR which the Leafs reportedly used two years ago with Horton and Lupul. The 10%, to my understanding, is above that.

I'm not sure Mikheyev wins a spot beside Matthews, especially with Johnsson coming off a good rookie year.
I could see a third line centred by Shore, with Spezza on RW. That would allow Moore to move up on the left side at least temporarily in replacement of Hyman.

Theoretical Marner Offer Sheet Insurance Roster
I very much doubt the Leafs would match such an offer but the fact that they CAN match it is the insurance deterrent, along with the fact that the team paying over-market has to provide 4 firsts.
Add in the fact that a term over 5 years (eg 7) has to have the AAV inflated by Term/5 and Marner's camp has reportedly asked for no long term offers, and it's hard to imagine any team being interested.

Certainly moving Nylander solves a lot of Cap issues. It's a major decision for the team. I still haven't gotten to the point where the three RFA's would cost $16M but maybe you've had many discussions on that already.

What moves would you make to sign them under the Cap if you can't move Marleau and Zaitsev, assuming you have $12.2M to spend after keeping a $500k buffer?

Totally agree but I'm putting that D there because *Leafs have no choice* the way Zaitsev has been playing. He would be basically a vet third pair guy, much like Hainsey was.
