I think if we want to keep our team together and keep Matthews/Marner, it would be best not to get him in my opinion. I love Alex, the way he plays and his leadership, but we can't afford him.

1. Zaitsev is a dump, Philly doesn't have a lot of defenseman and has lots of cap to take on his contract. They could turn him around playing top4 minutes.
2. Kapanen doesn't have to drive his line when he would have Aho and Teravainen.
3. Why do you think Carolina traded their best left handed D for a right handed one? PLUS already having Faulk... Helllllloooo Pesce ain't a top pair on Carolina.
I think your not understanding any points already mentioned be others and understand the value of Pesce.

Quoting: Caniac555

Nylander was very much in play for the Canes until money got involved. IMO - Leafs paid too much...they are going to have to move things now to make it all work. Likely Kapanen and taking a bath on that terrible Zaitsev contract.
Not arguing the fit for Kapanen, actually I’ve wanted that to happen for a long time. His dad was a Whaler/Cane too. He fits a need, just don’t think it’s Pesce.
Canes package TVR plus salary, picks, prospects is likely the best being offered

So your basically backing up my point. Carolina fans would be excited too have Kapanen, and I'm sure he would be a great forward and help them out greatly. They could sign him to a bridge contract for 3 years, and see how he does. I do see how I could have added a 2nd to the trade.
I even like TVR and a package for him.

@DomCholette Or the offer I made? Why would Carolina trade away a 2nd, which will be top 10 in the second round at least, and they get Toronto's 1st, which will be a late pick!! Also, Kapanen didn't play with Marner or Tavares this year!
I would suggest to do some research before commenting.

I heard John Scott was coming out of retirement and Philly was the front runners to sign him, but they would have to buyout Giroux's contract.

@Caniac555 I see where going, but Nylander wasn't going to be traded. If I can recall, I've seen Carolina have more interest in Kapanen then Nylander. Two young Finland players on your top line, I think the were/are looking to build chemistry and find a young forward and can score.
I think it makes logical sense to me given what is online and what Kapanen has to offer over Nylander.

@Larkinisking regardless of his team friendly contract, when your staked on defensemen for the future plus adding a right-handed young player that can score goals and play with their top players, id say it's a no brainer.

@Rooney11 THANK YOU! That's why I made two options, Johnsson could be a good top9/top6 forward for years to come and Bracco hopefully could play similar to Marner, OR Kapanen could grow and play with Aho for years.

@mikeyscav I fine he's playing okay with a decent contract, he just didn't live up to the hype we all thought he would be back in Russia. I feel with Pesce' contract, age and style of play, he would mesh better with Rielly whereas Zaitsev can't find his place with Rielly.

Trade Marleau for purposes of buyout and resign him
Never seen this thought process in a while, well done. It's always those 'what if' questions that makes you think that this could happen and it would be amazing for Toronto fans. Although, I think Gardiner would need a change in scenery. We don't always hate him, but we don't always love what he does on the ice either. Also, it would be a dream to trade and resign Marleau, but Brooks Orpik didnt have no clauses on his contract. Marleau signed that No Movement Clause for a reason. Good job tho.

@Juice I bet your the only one that read the description too hahaha! Thanks buddy. Just trying to find out what everyones thoughts on what we do to keep Gardiner. I have days where I like him, some theres some hate. Although if he has to go, it makes total sense. Same situation as JVR, there's no way he would have stayed.

Hahaha again @Jamiepo , trying to make something work xD. Matthews and marner will no way in hell take 75% of what they are worth, guarantee. I find Marner contract is fair, it's Matthews contract that puzzles people. I think 11.5 is the slowest it will go, I can possibly see him get upwards to 13.
On D, we need a veteran regardless. I don't have much confidence in Rosen, Liljegren and possibly Sandin or Marincin. I believe they have something to show, but they need to gradually get the feel to play in the NHL.

Quoting: littlejerryseinfeld

Let Gardiner go and sign a cheap vet defenseman to bridge to the young guys. It barely fits, but then Marleau will be done after 1 year
Still think Matthews gets more, but I know that is not a universal opinion

That's what I was thinking in the first place, let Gardiner go and bring in one of the veteran players I mentioned for a year. What do you think Matthews should get @littlejerryseinfeld ? I could see him get more then McDavid too because of the market he's in.
I guess peoples thoughts vary by subject lol... @palhal
I get reality, I can't see Gardiner as a Leaf after this season too, but it's the effort of trying to keep some chemistry and to make Gardiner better. Even if he takes a bigger cut, the team could work. Who do you thhink should be there?

Quoting: CaptainFlynnt

Hudon scored at a pace of 34 points last year, Kapanen scored at a pace of 19 pts. Kapanen broke out this year playing with Matthews while Nylander wasn't playing, Hudon would put up points playing with Matthews too. Yes, Kapanen is better than Hudon but I dont think Kapanen is a special player. Hudon would help replace Kapanens spot on Forward and Petry would solve TOR's defensive issues, it's a no brainer for Toronto.

I was gonna type out a big slur about comparing points, but Hudon will be on pace for 30 ponits if he keeps it up. I just find that Hudon will get a tad better then he is now and that's it. Toronto could sign Kapanen to a nice bridge contract and Kapanen could grow to a 60+ point player regardless if he plays with Matthews or not. I went to watch Toronto last year (they Boston and NY Islanders, they won both games and Matthews got hurt vs Boston), I found Kapanen was by far one of the best players on the ice alongside Marner. He had a bunch of chances and he plays very well defensively. You may not think he's special, but you can't tell say that Hudon can replace or would help replace Kapanen.
Hudon would be tossed on the third or fourth line, Petry would play very nicely with Rielly.

replacing Hudon for Kapanen... nice joke man, nice joke. But seriously, we have common ground for Petry. He would be valuable to us.
