Lindstrom/Demidov if they're available are the top realistic options but doubt they will be. If neither are available at 6 and Iginla too which I doubt, It'll be a dman. Seems like Parehk or Yakemchuk being the likely candidates.
I still think its Iginla though when it's all said and done.</div></div>
See my other replies in this thread about Iginla, I have concerns. I could be totally wrong, but I think the concerns are valid.
Listening to the end of season press conference from Hughes and Gorton, the priority will definitely be on selecting a forward. But I guess you can never rule out picking another dman.
I think your expectations of where Catton drops is wrong. If some teams buy into the Cooley comparisons, he's long gone by 10th overall.

Slaf was a late 1st, and became the rightful 1st OA pick. Cameron Allen was projected as the best D in the 2023 draft but fell to the 5th round.</div></div>
Also, players dropping in the draft is pretty common, it's players that climb in the draft that needs to be looked at. Slaf is a good example, Kotkaniemi is another, in both cases they were still considered 1st rd talent. It's almost unheard of that a player is barely making the 3rd rd one year, and is then considered a top 5 pick the next. Hence, my apprehension. Add the whole "his last name is Iginla" hype, and alarms are starting to go off.
Could very much be an extremely high risk, high reward pick. But when you have guys like Lindstrom and Catton posibily available, it's kind of hard to justify <strong>that much</strong> risk taking with Iginla.

They didn’t pick Michkov because of his attitude. He fought his teamate or ex-teamate twice (Miroshnichenko and Remezovsky). He kicked a teamates in the locker room because he was in his way. He’s getting loaned from SKA even if he is one of the best scorer in the KHL. There are a lot of off ice red flags.
I prefer Demidov as a prospect and as a human being.</div></div>
Nah, that's just a bunch of rumors. And if they were true, PHI probably wouldn't have picked him either.
Reason they didn't pick Michkov, imo, is because they didn't have access to him, to scout him in person, and to be able to develop him with their own staff, until his contract is up in a few years. Development seems to really be a focus with MTL. Even with Reinbacher, they had full control on if they wanted to send him to Kloten or keep him in Laval. And even in Switzerland, they were sending their own guys to work with him throughout the year (Ramage, Bouillon, etc.). Same will apply with Demidov, they have zero access to the player, until he would sign and come over.

True, and admittedly I've only watched the scouting videos of Iginla on youtube:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SWoc6PkCI7w
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JOw24rIvlLo&t=324s

From what I see, nothing (apart from his compete level and wrist shot) screams "elite" to me. And you can't deny, especially recently, that too many articles are hyping him up due to his last name. It definitely has me second guessing, which I don't have for Catton or Lindstrom.
I could totally be wrong though!

The most underrated player in this years draft is Trevor Connelly. Kid is a guaranteed top 10 talent, but due to his off-ice issues (He shared a picture of his friend making a Swastika out of books in their school library...) Lots of teams will pass on him, just to avoid the PR trouble. Habs are definitely not taking him, even if he falls into the 20s and Habs have WINs 1st rd pick lol They don't want another Mailloux situation.

Really not buying into the hype for Tij Iginla. Especially if we are comparing him to Lindstrom. He had a fantastic playoff run, no doubt. but this is a guy that was barely getting ranked in the 3rd round last year (Elite prospects had him 87th less than 12 months ago)... And I believe a lot of hype is getting added due to his last name... There are always late risers in draft rankings, but never to this extent. If there was ever an overrated prospect in this years draft, it's Iginla.
Lindstrom has been falling in the draft rankings, but it's mainly due to him being injured, and scouts being sour that he turned down going to the U18s...

Ah yes, I use examples such as the Monahan trade of you being a hater, and brought up Sakic's comments regarding your stance that both COL and MTL gave up on Barron, but sure let's go with anyone who disagrees with you must only be doing it from an emotional perspective...
Or it could just be that, every single Habs post that you engage with, you've disagreed and degraded Habs players and the Habs fans commenting on it.
Just own up to it, you're a hater, nothing wrong with that. It adds to the fun on here.

Value seems fine to me.....BUT since MTL is trading with the Leafs, there's that small internal part of me that wants to say no lol
Not to mention if Barron hits (which is still very much a possibility), it would be a very painful trade considering MTL just gets a late 1st and a meh prospect... If Barron were to hit with, let's say, a west coast team, not a big deal, congrats to Barron, MTL can move on. But with the Leafs.. habs would be reminded of it for the next decade.... no thanks to that.

Dude just stop, we get it. You're a Hab hater. The PLD shenanigans on here from Hab fans must have bothered you on some personal level or something. You kept calling Monahan a "4th line center on the Jets" for months, then got eerily quiet once WPG gave MTL their 1st rd pick for him, which looks to be a bargain at this point.
Barron most certainly has top 4 written all over him. He already has that skill offensively, and just needs to continue improving on his defensive game. Saying both COL and MTL gave up on him is just wrong, even Sakic said he didn't want to trade Barron when he acquired Lehkonen and continued by saying (I'm paraphrasing) you have to give quality to get quality. Habs simply have better prospects with higher all-around potential that makes Barron expendable.
As for this trade, MTL would be the ones refusing, they have too many bottom 6 forwards already, adding Kupari does nothing for them, and although MTLs 2nd is a nice asset, MTL have zero need to be adding more draft picks, unless they plan to flip it. but at that point, MTL could just use Barron to include in a package deal for what they are looking for.

The gap in quality players available at 5-6 overall vs 16th overall is huge, and definitely not worth moving down just to get rid of Anderson.
Habs don't have any cap issues, they could bury Anderson with no impact to their salary structure and happily keep 5-6 overall.

Well, he certainly had the opportunity to go if he wanted to. He just had to wait until August and he would have been free as a bird. Kent Hughes must have really laid out the sales pitch to convince him to sign.
That being said, considering the sales pitch it probably took to sign him, zero chance he gets traded for the next little while. Just for maintaining Hughes' reputation. Would look really bad if he traded him this offseason.

Necas and Zegras with comps
As other have mentioned, Debrincat is probably the closest comp for Zegras (slight edge in value going to Debrincat).
But I'll repeat this until pigs fly, ANA need players like Zegras in their lineup, it's a position (top 6 wingers) their own fans admit needs to improve. So if ANA is willing to move Zegras, from a positional weakness, there's something fishy going on... and something isn't adding up.
Habs should really look elsewhere if looking to add top 6 talent. Necas would be a good target.

In all seriousness, this story needs to die, from both sides (the idiots trying to defend his actions AND the morons virtue signaling by continuously trying to remind everyone how horrible he is). There are players, coaches, scouts all currently in the NHL that have shadier backgrounds (sexual harassment charges, some with DUIs that have actually killed people...), but because they aren't the flavor of today, nobody talks about them...

tbh, he didn't look any smaller than Harris, which surprised me.
No doubt he needs to fill in, but from his game last night, he looked great along the boards (edged out Fabbri on his back check in one instance, and boxed out Compher in the mid 3rd period), didn't look like he was getting out-muscled at all. Biggest thing he needed to work on by far was his positioning, you could tell that Savard was really working hard to cover for him and trying to coordinate where he needed to be.
Offensively though... you can tell he's something special:

Agreed, but it's very rare that it's the player that opts to NOT turn pro, it tends to be the other way around. Lane Hutson wanted to turn pro last year, but it was MTL that told him to return to BU (same happened to Caufield a few years back too with Wisconsin), Cutter Gauthier wanted to sign with PHI last year, but it was Philly that told him to return to BC and look how that turned out.
Only other instances of players, I can think of, opting to return to the NCAA on their own were Adam Fox (although in his case he made it very clear he wasn't signing with CGY, so not a good comparable), Jimmy Vesey was another case a while back with NSH (and he really strung the Preds along up until the very end...)
Again, it's a rare case, and WAY too early to think it means he doesn't want to sign.

75 goal differential offseason
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>jonh514</b></div><div>I appreciate your perspective. He's not Markov, I agree, Hopefully Hutson is!
As long as the Habs are adding 2 veteran forwards or 1 veteran forward and one Dach/Monahan style add of a forward like Lundell, I am happy.
<strong>I do not want to see Armia, Roy, Anderson, Gallagher, Evans, RHP in our top 6 unless there are injuries</strong>. Depending on camp I am on the fence about Newhook in the 2nd line LW spot, but either way we need to add 2 top 7 forwards.</div></div>
Agree with everyone except Roy, I'm willing to give him a look and see just how high a ceiling he has. Roy really excelled at being a complementary guy with elite players (perfect example being Roy with Bedard at the world juniors). If MTL can't get a Marchessault or Toffoli this offseason, I could totally see a top 6 with Roy on the wing with Suzuki and Newhook (who had great chemistry together before Newhook's ankle injury and subsequent move to center), and Caufield - Dach - Slafkovksy to round things out.
But yeah, if Habs can get Monahan back and add another vet (Marchessault or Toffoli), that would be the ideal situation. Also, Roy and Monahan played great during their short time together. Would be a solid 3rd line duo.
