Campbell cap dump Blues can help
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>mokumboi</b></div><div>What you've proposed is rather a fleece for the Blues, but we're not chasing deferred picks right now. Easy pass.</div></div>
A few stories I've read online have quotes saying it would take "multiple firsts" for Edmonton to rid themselves of Campbell's contract scott-free so that's where the idea came from.
I agree I don't think Edmonton does it but Blues could theoretically stand to benefit.
Army has wrecked this team. As far as "pressing needs" there are none. Dump assets, weaponize cap space, get more picks and prospects. That should be the only plan IMO.
Ownership can't and Army won't weaponize any cap space we have anyway so this is something that'll never happen but, again IMO, should.
I'd buy out Krug and Hayes if ownership could afford it and Army wasn't steadfastly against such things. I look forward to another mediocre finish next season!

Boring offseason commence
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>HolyJumpin81</b></div><div>I'm ok with a boring offseason. This likely is the last season that the krug and faulk contracts are unmovable, as the full NTC's end after this coming season. Stillman has never been fond of retaining bad contracts, so that seems unlikely. Keep in mind the blues are a rather small market team so retaining salary via buyout or long term contracts is rather unusual. An in house development focused offseason is for the best. It's nice to hear they have a plan and are sticking to it. I'd personally love to see if the can snag DP57 for a year or two as well. I think once these prospects start to produce, this team will see even more improvement. Realistically the only thing thats gonna hold this team back going forward are those awful deals given to krug, faulk, and schenn</div></div>
It might be as simple as incorporating kids as the older/longer term bad deals drop off one by one. This offseason Scandella/Kapanen/Vrana. Next summer Buchnevich (I love him but c'mon, we need to get assets and trade him at the deadline) and then 1 year left for Saad and Leddy, with their contracts switching from full NTC's to partials. Also 2 years left for Krug and Faulk and their contracts switch over to partials as well.
It's going to take time. This sucks. There's no 2 ways around it. I hope we stockpile enough picks and prospects that the team will be more than average once the kids get up and in.

Kapanen was 26 at $3.2 AAV and had "flamed out" on two teams. Vrana was 27 at $2.625 AAV and had "flamed out" on two teams as well. Young*ish. It's the age range Army is targeting for immediate-injection type players.

Why would he sign in SJ?
Why would he sign for less to play in SJ?
Why are any of these other teams making these trades?</div></div>
I could maybe see the Blues doing it. Army has shown in the past a willingness to take flyers on young, underachieving players (see, e.g. Kapanen, Vrana) for low acquisition costs. I don't know enough about how Kunin and Zadina have played this year to know if a 3rd and a 7th are too much or good, or not enough (I think it's a little rich but that's just me). But this is the kind of moves Army has been making lately with the forward group. Just depends what he thinks of Kunin & Zadina.

Reunited and It Feels So Good
I think Army is going to try to get two 1sts out of him if he can. That failing, this is probably as good as any deal he'd have on the table. I get the suspicion that Army could get more for a retained, bargain deal on a high impact 29 year old winger in high demand.

Keeping the D-men
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>mokumboi</b></div><div>"wouldn't it be nice"</div></div>
It would... very much.
Hindsight is easy, anyone can do it... but there were criticisms, at the time, of every trade Army made on that blueline. Unforced errors.
Even if we assume Seattle still yanks Dunn in the expansion draft this defense would STILL be better, IMO, with Edmundson still on there with Walman and Mikkola than it is now. At least we'd be younger with less cap restraints, if absolutely nothing else.

Thread:
(PHI/STL) - Hayes for 2024 6th (STL)
For the Blues: Actually I think I really like it. Hayes and Schenn can rotate in the 2C / 3C spots depending on who's playing better/chemistry at any given point in time. It's like signing him to a 3 year deal at $3.5 AAV, which I would do all day every day.
For the Flyers: They're rebuilding, it didn't matter if it was a "loss" trade. They gained: (1) cap flexibility for other moves or salary retentions that could return them even MORE draft/prospect capital, (2) a 6th round draft pick. It is a massive return? No. Did Briere at least get SOMETHING? Yes he did. There's one more asset in the rebuild pipeline for a player who was not part of the future. It's SOMEthing; and infinitely better than a buyout.

And Jim Benning wasn't fired as Canucks GM until months later. I stand by what I said. </div></div>
It's all good. For some at the time it was a close trade. I thought OEL was a diminishing asset and I couldn't believe the price Vancouver paid even if you thought he could bounce back considering he had a full NMC and Vancouver was rumored to be just about the only destination he would accept a trade to. Even if you thought OEL had something left to give, Arizona had zero leverage in the trade negotiations.
Credit to Benning for swinging hard I guess.

(ARI/VAN) - Ekman-Larsson, Garland for Beagle, Eriksson, Roussel, 1st, 2nd, 7th
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>jr400</b></div><div>This has to go down as one of the worst trades ever. Of course, hindsight is 20/20, but looking back, it seems that they should have known better. When I broke down the trade in 2021, I figured it made sense for Vancouver only if OEL at 12% retained was a neutral or positive asset, but if you look at the comments made at the time of the trade, most people thought he was a negative asset even then. Even if Vancouver thought he might return to form with a change of scenery, they should have realized that it was a huge gamble to take at his age and cap hit. I know they were desperate to get rid of the $12M 1-year cap hit, but they actually would have been better off just buying those three guys out.</div></div>
I certainly was one of the "negative asset" people. I certainly also could not fathom the price Vancouver paid. If the internet chatter was to be believed at the time, Vancouver was one of the very very few destinations that OEL would accept a trade to. Arizona had zero leverage and they walked away from this trade with the 9th overall pick? Insanity. Utter insanity, even then without the benefit of hindsight and it's even worse now.
Teams constantly letting other teams off the hook for their horrendous deals. We just saw a team lift the cup where other teams let them out of their cap dilemmas by trading with them for cap dumps, not making Vegas pay nearly enough to do so.
I was one of the ones who thought the trade was insane the moment I heard about it, I did not think OEL had much of anything left. Jim Benning was the worst.

Simply draft Michkov
Why do NHL fans consistently seem to think that quantity equals quality in these draft pick trades?
They don't. Not even close. You could have three late 1st round picks and Flyers probably don't do it. They'd rather have the one stud than three "maybe's" (at best).
There's a reason we haven't seen a team deal a top 10 pick in, what, decades? They're just way, way too valuable. Teams aren't doing it, much less for crappy "quantity" returns.

Something's gotta give. I agree the Pens might be a trade partner for our defensive woes, as Parayko, Krug, Leddy and/or Scandella would probably waive their NTC's to go there. The issue is going to be the structure of the deal and what's coming back.
Both teams want to shake things up, a Pens/Blues trade could definitely happen. Not sure if this is it (haha) but it's a good trade partner.

I voted "No" not a good signing.
Regardless of value this team should be endeavoring to stay youthful, not older. The playoffs are only getting faster and faster and whatever effectiveness Ryan had last year could fall off a cliff at a moment's notice. For a team counting every cap dollar I don't know about this one.

Shoot, I'd be tempted. It depends how much of a rebound you think Krug has or what other moves Army would do after this but the trade DOES get them out of Krug's contract. Just depends how badly Army wants to do that I guess.
There'd have to be another move after this. Petry dumped for someone else or other moves made to create room for a younger D-man... something. It wouldn't be JUST this, no way.
Not saying I'd do it, saying I don't think it's an immediately obvious "NO." For me.
I'm also extraordinarily pessimistic on Krug's future in this league too, so...

This could end up as "fair trade." But man oh man, look at you Philly. A 1st, two 2nd's, two reclamation projects and a prospect for a guy who'd stagnated on your blueline anyway?
"Kick start the rebuild" indeed. What a direct injection of prospect capital!

How cheaply can they do this
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ecupirate07</b></div><div>They could get cheaper.
Get a small pick for Seabrook and Myers post signing bonus. That would be 3.4 million real dollars for 8.275 million in cap. They can trade Schmaltz for a good futures trade saving 7.5 million in real money (or 3.1 million aggregate) for an additional 3 million of cap.</div></div>
The Weber deal was a no brainer for them. $7.8 cap hit for $1 million bucks? Couldn't script it better.
Yea Seabrook maybe. The funny thing is they still have to put a team on the ice and even just as it is just re-signing their RFA's almost gets them to the floor. They don't "need" to acquire more dead money LTIR deals. Good point on Schmaltz though. One of the few/only cash-heavy contracts they still have.

Caps 202324
I'd say no for the Blues. Army might listen but I wouldn't.
First, it'd push us over the cap (we only have $6.7 in space this offseason) so a corresponding move would have to happen somewhere and Army traditionally has wanted to allow a little wiggle room at the ceiling.
Second, it seems the Blues are content trying out Buch or someone else in the 2nd or 3rd line center role so they may be trying to fill that void from within.
Although Army is all about reclamation projects, they've been cheap and young that he's brought on. Kuznetsov is turning 31 this May and Army is on record he wants 26-28 year olds in a perfect world, and he's making too much.
I think the Blues pass. But Army would listen I think.
