DET- 2023 contenders- Thoughts
I don’t see why Pens would have to add draft capital for a rental.
Ask 32 GM’s and ask wether they would want a late 1st round pick. Or a 25 year old, LHD, signed long term to a 4M per contract, plays 17-20 minutes a night on a winning team and has play--off experience. Stay at home D-man, long stick, long reach, moves the puck well too. Good hockey IQ.
They would take the 25 year old, NHL D-man.

He's working fine there tonight.
We don't look like we're in the same class with you guys. A ferocious forecheck, super penalty killing, excellent power play . . . I underestimated you guys. When tonight's game is over, you'll be 16-3-1 in the last 20 with Malkin playing only one of those games but scoring two goals in one period.

ZAR signed
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Blynasty</b></div><div>With any luck Carter and Zucker stay healthy while Geno is out and form some chemistry that can remain together for the rest of the reason in a scoring threat 3rd line. Keep Malkin with Kapanen and try every option possible on left wing (I'd say including Jake). I think there's good cases to be made for McGinn, Heinen and Rodriquez to all step into that role depending on whoever performs best. Run Blueger with ZAR and the 4th line shakes itself out.
I think people are a little bit too dramatic about all the necessary changes needed to the roster. If you aren't improving upon Pettersson or Zucker without giving up massive assets then what's the point? They had bad years, they can bounce back. Jarry had a bad year, he can bounce back. Pettersson will likely have a new everyday partner, could make a big difference.</div></div>
Part of the problem with this fanbase is that it thinks the end of the world over a few bad games. I mean honestly, that’s why everyone wants to trade Jarry. He had a couple bad games while dealing with a rib injury in his first year as starter. Tbh Pettersson and Marino honestly looked way better when they got paired together again. I think if they are paired together next season, it will make it much easier to trade Pettersson next offseason when POJ should be totally ready for a top 4 role. I’m not going to be too pessimistic until after preseason/start of the season to see if Hallander/Poulin/or Legare can make an impact and if Angello/Lafferty can finally make that next leap. My biggest concern (and only concern) is the 3rd RD spot.
I think McGinn and Heinen can/will battle it out for a top 6 role. Which it wouldn’t be bad for McGinn to be on Crosby’s line and maybe move Jake down to Malkin’s line.

Honestly MP has been better than Sprong.
Horny had to go. It is what it is.
That Zucker trade, I'd undo that in a minute.
I still don't get the Kahun trade. Was it a cap issue with bonus......my god that was a cluster F of a trade.
Glad JR is gone. If only he took Sully with him.

Trading Guentzel to Set Up A Rebuild Offseason
Love how all you Pens fans are ready to jump off the Jarry bandwagon soooo quickly... He struggled at the beginning of the season and in playoffs but the in between he was sorting it out, and you're all quick to forget how good he was last season pre-pandemic... Kid is still young on a team friendly deal and will be coming back with a purpose next season, while coming into his prime years.. Settle down Pens fans, you're gonna be fine, tweaks here and there and the team still has a window to winning(a lot longer than Washington's that's for sure!!!)...

Malkin and Crosby on the same line? That is suicide. Look how well that worked for Edmonton with two starts who are a decade younger. I would flip Rust and Tanev to get Crosby a bit of a break. The Islanders have perfect match up players and they are just pushing the Penguins around. You need a guy on Crosby's line like Tanev who can free up space for him to work.
I would go with:
McCann-Crosby-Tanev
Guentzel-Carter-Kapanen
Zucker-Malkin-Rust
Aston-Reese-Blueger-Gaudreau (or Rodrigues)

I protect Pettersson and leave Matheson available. Give Seattle the choice between Zucker or Matheson, either one frees up cap space and if Mats gets picked, then you don't need to trade to open room for POJ.

If I’m Chicago I don’t mess with the retool. Young guys are developing great. Don’t rush it and sell off good secondary pieces for a top line guy. This isn’t the team to do that with.

The rest can kind of shake around as needed. What you have above I think makes the most sense, and it became obvious that Sceviour was going to be the odd man odd when Tanev came back it made sense to have that Teddy/ZAR/Tanev line come back together.
I'm not a huge fan of Zucker on the Malkin line, I think Rust could do well there, I think McCann could do well there, but unless there is a need no reason to shake up.</div></div>
Rust is better on the RW than LW. And Kap is a RW.
This is the hold up there.
The real solution to this is to put Zucker with Crosby and Jake with Geno.
Everyone knows this.
There are multiple people on here saying this over and over again. But he just refuses to do it.
Jake can play with Geno, there will be no drop in production there. We know this, he's done this already.
You hope to get more out of Zucker with Crosby.
Which he did when he first got here.
Yet Sully can't seem to figure out that it deserves a chance to see what it can do. It's not like he couldn't have done this in season. Now if they do it they have to hope for some chemistry being instant.

Re-signing RFAs
I think ZAR is on his way out.
There are only so many roster spots. Someone has to go so someone else can come in. That's all there is to that.
You got guys like Poulin and OConnor who will probably be fighting for spots next year. OConnor is too good of a player to sit in the AHL. He's a PPG player down there. Given he was a rookie this year, but his inexperience and nerves is really the only thing that held him back. He's going to be a good bottom 6 player in the NHL. He also adds a bit more size.
Even if they lose one of McCann or Zucker, they still don't really have room due to Poulin.
You got issues on the bottom of this roster where you got a lot of guys chomping at the bit and at some point they are gonna get ice time.
ZAR has been a good player, but sell high. They already have the replacement.

His agents are looking for a 12 mil contract, this is more of a realistic option of what i think he will take. Obviously i dont want him to take that much but it seem the contract will be in the 11-12 million dollar range

Playoff Lines
I would say move McCann to 2nd line, Zucker to his natural wing on the 3rd line, and ERod to 3RW. But the lines are fine and I love the depth.
