2023-2024 NHL Discussion Thread #2: Early Overreactions
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Bobcat205</b></div><div>I've noticed a lot of good character development surrounding this CBJ team in the weeks gone by, the most prevalent and stabilizing of which being that we're not immediately keeling over and dying when we give up 2 early goals (or a goal within the first minute)
Under Larsen (and to a lesser extent in the last year under Torts) if we gave up two goals in 7 minutes like we did against Ottawa last Friday, everything would have just shut down and we'd lose 5-1 or something, but we fought back and won. We're actually making some progress, as much as those in the HFBoards community don't think so.</div></div>
I've tried to catch a few of the CBJ games when I can to watch Fantilli. What I do see that would give me hope as a fan is that Werenski, Lowry, and Jenner seem to be "lead from the front" type of leaders that refuse to backdown for anything or anyone; or allow themselves to make excuses. There are times where you can clearly see that the Jackets are outclassed skill-wise but they fight hard. With Gaudreau playing better and the Russian line providing a nice change of pace; they just need someone else on the blueline to step up. If the D can activate regularly without committing blunders then they could be more consistent. It seems like their transition game is the part that is choppy and a solid 2nd pair will help with that. Not sold on Provorov unless he has a real steady partner (same MO as in Philly).

Maybe Columbus should have never got Provorov or Severson
columbus went and acquired good players to fix a bad position group, and now people are like "uhhhhhh why would they do that? now they have to move players who are less good than the ones they just got, sounds like a big mistake!!!!!!"
like, yeah, they absolutely should have made those trades. it makes the defense better. even if they only get like a third round pick for peeke that'll offset the cost they paid to get severson and they will have essentially upgraded from peeke to severson for free.

Both excited and not optimistic. Glad motorsport games is gone, but i worry the game will attract the sweatiest, most toxic members of Iracing who take it far too seriously and will make online no fun. If they have a solid offline mode though, I'll be happy.

Much more national, and it makes some semblance of sense on a map. Starting in mid-March in Florida, and ending in the fall in California.</div></div>
Roval would be a chaotic but enjoyable mess.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Bobcat205</b></div><div>Yeah, that sucks, the race last year was really good, but apparently the dates couldn't match between IndyCar and TMS's management.
I'm surprised they couldn't agree on one of the off weeks:
- May 5th, between Barber and the Indy GP
- July 28th or August 4th, between Toronto and Gateway
- September 5th, between Milwaukee and Nashville
It's a shame.</div></div>
Don't think they'd be able to justify a non-indy race or event in the month of may but the other dates would have been perfectly fine, i agree. The map of where races are occurring is also disappointing to see, barely branching out from a straight line north-south of Indy and a couple races on the west coast. I'd have hoped they would find places to go that would make it more national and more interesting.

I was there last night. Yes, tehy scored that grimy goal early, but Texier didn't really look comfortable til the second and third. They were humming by the end of the game. I hope Vincent keeps the three of them together.
My other observation is that Mateychuk is going to make it very hard for them to send him back to Moose Jaw. He was probably the best defenseman on the ice last night, including Werenski. Also caught a few flashes of Severson's passing ability that made me think, "Ah, yep, I get it now."

I've loved watching some old stuff from like 2009-2011 with the Sprint commercials boasting about 4G internet. Y'all remember when that was novel technology?
It's not yet a full archive of every broadcasted race (we're still missing most of the 2008 season) and some broadcasts are edited (see: 2007 Sonoma, where we don't hear Kyle Petty yelling "WHAT THE F*CK WAS THAT" on live TV), but it's still an amazing asset to my NASCAR fandom.</div></div>

Browns-Bengals was fun to listen to on the radio. Between Jim Donovan for the Browns, Tom Hamilton for the Guardians and Bob McElligott for the Jackets, i'm pretty damn spoiled for radio options.
If the Bengals felt the same way my dad and i do, they would <em>never</em> let Joe Burrow play in the rain again. He was <em>awful</em>, and Zac Taylor's playcalling (especially on that 4th down with 10 minutes left) didn't really help much.
I didn't know much about this Jerome Ford guy coming into this year, but based on his play from this Sunday, he's a totally adequate backup for Nick. Not bad for a rookie in his first game.
Deshaun... was still Deshaun. Overthrows and underthrows abound, but he got it done on his feet. At what point do we bring in DTR?</div></div>

I think it's long enough now, i can talk about what happened here.
Everyone blaming this on the underbody of the Next Gen car has no idea what they're talking about. You could throw anything sideways at 200 mph and it'll catch air. It's just physics.
With that being said, this is the most Hot Wheels-*ss wreck i've seen in a long time. Glad to hear Ryan's okay.
(what is it with guys named Ryan and wrecking horrifically at Daytona in recent years)</div></div>
Next Gen car may be completely terrible when it comes to driver safety but I'd agree it's not at fault for Preece's crash. We've seen cars do crazy things the moment they dig into that infield dirt (see Buescher's Rocket League looking crash at Charlotte), thankfully the safety mechanisms did what they were supposed to do. What somehow is being overlooked in all the chaos of Blaney's crash, Preece's flip, and Keselowski's donuts, is that RFK had an absolute masterclass in teamwork to win. Keselowski and Buescher did everything perfectly to make sure no one could get enough of a run to split the two or get around them, and those RFK boys look good going into the playoffs.
