Yeah, that sucks, the race last year was really good, but apparently the dates couldn't match between IndyCar and TMS's management.
I'm surprised they couldn't agree on one of the off weeks:
- May 5th, between Barber and the Indy GP
- July 28th or August 4th, between Toronto and Gateway
- September 5th, between Milwaukee and Nashville
It's a shame.

I'm excited for Milwaukee coming back. I hope this is the beginning of even more ovals on the schedule.

2023 NHL Offseason Discussion Thread #4 - The quiet period
Some brief notes about yesterday, starting with the matinee in Pittsburgh:
- Dmitri Voronkov's physicality is a great asset. I kinda wanna see a grit line of Vronk - Boone - Olivier at some point this season.
- Tim Berni looked bad out there. If he's still holding out for more money, then he's likely not getting it.
- Boqvist is stll Boqvist: his own-zone work is still suspect.
- I can confidently say Jiricek is still not NHL ready. He'll have to ball out in Cleveland again this year. I have a lot of faith in him.
Now, the evening game at home:
- Great to see Big Z and Tex back on the ice. Both of them had solid games, although we could see some improvement from Zach on the PP.
- Elvis had an up-and-down game. He's still scrambling/flailing and letting in softies, which sets some alarms off, but at the same time he's now making saves that last year's Elvis wasn't making. I hope it's just offseason rust.
- Jordan Dumais looks set for a big year in Cleveland. Good on him for ending it with authority.
I'm excited for tomorrow against St. Louis.

2023 NHL Offseason Discussion Thread #4 - The quiet period
Some news from the first day of Training Camp yesterday:
- Cole Sillinger is now wearing #4 instead of #34, citing Taylor Hall's time in Edmonton as his inspiration.
- Captain Boone took a puck up high and left early. Not expected to be serious, but Pazzi doesn't know the full story yet.
- Coby Maeir had some good things to say about Denton Mateychuk and James Malatesta, praising Matey's poise and Malatesta's work ethic (the kid's a f*cking animal). Neither of them are making the big team, but they're set for big years in the minors.
- Kent Johnson balled out on a line with JG and Hunter McKown, making David Jiricek look like he needed a map on one specific play (which is both a blessing and a curse).
Good work, all things considered

recently fallen in love with the new NASCAR Classics page, getting to live through some old memories is an amazing feeling
I've loved watching some old stuff from like 2009-2011 with the Sprint commercials boasting about 4G internet. Y'all remember when that was novel technology?
It's not yet a full archive of every broadcasted race (we're still missing most of the 2008 season) and some broadcasts are edited (see: 2007 Sonoma, where we don't hear Kyle Petty yelling "WHAT THE F*CK WAS THAT" on live TV), but it's still an amazing asset to my NASCAR fandom.

Babcock

Quoting: Wilson_W_Wilson_Jr

Do you mean the picture controversy?
Glad to see that this guy is gone, AGAIN. But, I still don't understand what goes through Columbus' head when they are trying to fill their head coaching vacancy, and they land on Babcock.
Whose decision was this, and who needs to be fired?
Do the Blue Jackets not have any internal hires or former players that they can consider for this role? Or maybe a former coach with a good track record?

I have no idea what the team (by "the team" i mean John Davidson) was thinking with the Babcock hire but the prevailing theory in my mind is that we needed a stopgap for a year or two before Trent Vogelhuber is ready for the head coach role in Columbus. He's done a solid job as the head honcho in Cleveland so far.
Pascal Vincent, in my opinion, should have been the play from the beginning if that's what they're actually doing.

I am ready to put all this Babs BS behind us and i've got some... medium-range expectations for Pascal Vincent.
We're still probably not making the playoffs but we won't be bottom-feeders if everything goes right (re: staying healthy).

The optimism has faded slightly but i still have a lot of faith in this squad. Pascal Vincent has proven to be a competent head coach in the AHL and QMJHL, so i would hope he gets the boys to rally around him.

As embarrassing as this is, i highly doubt Jarmo is on as hot of a seat as people think. Give it until the end of the year, and if we're still a lottery pick, then we'll talk.

there's a very slim chance this leads to a proper NHL contract since he was in the ECHL last season, but a chance nonetheless.

After looking into the whole Barstool-Babcock thing, I've come to the conlcusion that if this was a coach like Jon Cooper or Rod Brind'amour, this wouldn't be such a hot-button issue. It's because it's Mike Babcock that people are pissed.
At the end of the day, it's a nothing issue.

so uh, week 1 was cool
Browns-Bengals was fun to listen to on the radio. Between Jim Donovan for the Browns, Tom Hamilton for the Guardians and Bob McElligott for the Jackets, i'm pretty damn spoiled for radio options.
If the Bengals felt the same way my dad and i do, they would never let Joe Burrow play in the rain again. He was awful, and Zac Taylor's playcalling (especially on that 4th down with 10 minutes left) didn't really help much.
I didn't know much about this Jerome Ford guy coming into this year, but based on his play from this Sunday, he's a totally adequate backup for Nick. Not bad for a rookie in his first game.
Deshaun... was still Deshaun. Overthrows and underthrows abound, but he got it done on his feet. At what point do we bring in DTR?
