The idea is SJ rebuilding and bad goaltending will help with that rebuild, a 100pt defensemen will not. If EDM had to change Lavoie for Bourgault so be it. I don’t think there will be a lot of teams that will offer more then what I’ve proposed. Plan B would be is hopefully Campbell finds his game with having less pressure from the media and maybe SJ can flip him for a team looking for a goalie in a year, by that time the cap should have gone up significantly and 5 million won’t be so bad. It’s a gamble for both sides really.

I wouldn’t say that it’s a lateral move. Laughton is a centre (pretty good on the draws) and kills penalties.

Van city
Benning is also 25yo and would save Vancouver about $400000 in cap. Benning and Stecher both have similar stat lines. You are right Baertschi could score 20 goals if he is healthy, he is also 26yo and injury prone. His cap hit is also $3.366 million, where pool party may turn into a 20 goal scorer and his contract would probably be between $1-$1.25 million against the cap. Saving Vancouver around $2 million of cap. Everyone knows the story with Lucic and Eriksson. So in total Vancouver should save around $2.5 million on the cap and with boeser still needing a contract that would be very valuable.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Ajp_18</b></div><div>2 cap dumps a second and a third=Wennberg(not a cap dump) and Savard? Who kid napped Jarmo?
Wennberg isn’t a cap dump unless you really think he isn’t going to put up more then 25 points on a different team, plus he’s only 24. Someone would be willing to bet on him and send Columbus a 3rd to see if he can regain his form from 2 years ago when he had 50+ points and was looked at as a future number 1 center. Savard is a good top 4 RHD and never gets enough credit for how good he really is. He’s probably worth decent prospect and a 2nd (not a top prospect like Yamamoto or Bouchard, someone in the next tier of prospects). Sekera isn’t really needed in Columbus with how young our d is going to be and would be a cap dump of a player with little value. Ganger is overpaid and a cap dump.</div></div>
2 years ago Lucic had 50 points......

What do you think
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>BootBoi</b></div><div>Having quoted that, all trades look reasonable.
Doubt Ehlers comes so cheap!
Additions of Hagelin&Kinkaid are detriments.
Thoughtfully done..-~</div></div>
I think Larsson, is a fair return maybe have to through in a 3rd round pick. As for Hagelin signing, I believe he could contribute to this team in a very positive way, he is speedy, has playoff exp, is good on the PK. Kinkaid also filled in fairly well last year for the devils when Schnieder was not on his game. I too would perfer better options but unfortunately to have to get what you can take to fit under the cap.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Grievous</b></div><div>Interesting moves, but Koskinen is such a streaky/shaky goaltender I would look for a back-up with a better track record.
That Right side D is pretty shaky, Ristolainen needs to play 2nd pair or lower (trading Nuge for him is a really bad idea). He is not a good defender vs elites. Russell is much better on the left side and ideally plays 3rd pair. Persson is a complete unknown at this point, might not be better than Bouchard and likely needs a season in the AHL to acclimatize to smaller rinks.</div></div>
It’s going to be pretty tough to fill the winger voids and find a better backup option and fit under the cap. I agree that Risto is not a top pairing Dman, but IMO he is better than Larsson, also with the cap restrictions you have to take what you can get. I would perfer Persson over Bouchard next year because Persson, although over seas, has pro exp. Bouchard needs to ripen in the minors next year.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>csick</b></div><div>Buffalo deal depends how highly they view RNH.
I don't see a reason for Ottawa to make this deal unless they send back Smith and/or Boedker.
Winnipeg in no way pulls this trade off. Maybe Nurse for Ehlers if Edmonton is lucky.
Toronto accepts.</div></div>
The Senators will save millions of dollars, and receive 2 NHL competent players, Gagner and Benning. I’m sure Melnyk doesn’t want to pay out 11 million in salary over the next 2 years to two guys that aren’t ever going to play again. As for the Jets trade, they probably won’t have the money to resign Myers so they will need to replace a RHD. Larsson is RH and comes for the next 2 years at a reasonable cap hit. Nurse is LH and is only signed through next year and will get a nice pay raise I would think. Like I said up top, the Oilers may have to through in a middle round pick with Larsson.

If your trading for TVR you need to move out a RHD. Chances of moving Russell without retaining salary would be tough IMO. TVR is a better defender than Benning and the Oilers are terrible in their defensive zone.
As for the bottom six being terrible, you could let Chiasson, Reider and Rattie walk and with that money sign someone like Donskoi, and a cheap vet, shuffle the lines around so you have McDavid, Nuge, and Kadri down the middle. Spread the wealth. Maybe that works.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Smokingun71</b></div><div>I like the Leafs trade but not sure that they would do it. I would rather keep Nurse over Pesce, I think his ceiling is way higher</div></div>
I agree that I don’t think Larsson and two mid round picks get you Kadri and Brown. Would have to anti up a bit. Also Kadri would have to waive his no trade to come to a struggling Oilers team, which would probably impose a problem.
I would agree, Nurse has the higher ceiling. Problem being if you are going to trade Larsson you need to replace him with a RHD. Pesce is also signed long term to a cap friendly salary. Oilers are also getting an upgrade on Benning with TVR.

Dig Deep N Bleed Blue
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>DigDeepNBleedBlue</b></div><div>I wrote a lil’ verbiage to explain. Not sure if that shows up but here is that mouth full:
This is my EARLY two year plan to get out of Chiarelli’s cluster puck.
First: I like Lucic. A lot. My type of player but his scoring decline at his price point is beyond problematic. My solution: trade him to Ottawa for Ryan. If done after both player’s signing bonuses are paid Ottawa will save 4 and a half mil. During a rebuild and for an owner who, it would seem, likes to save money this would be a welcome addition for him.
Lucic provides leadership and protection during the rebuild and Ryan potentially 15-20 goals as a 2nd liner with RNH and only 3 years of contract left instead of four. I’d try and get a draft pick from Ottawa too. Is a 3rd worth 4 and a half mil? I’d say.
2nd: a third line center with skill who can also play wing if needed. My first look is Johansson but that’s not set in stone. But somebody similar who can be signed for around 3.75-4mil at one year.
3rd: I go with, basically, the same D-core and goalies (or someone under a mill for backup tender) for a year. The following year, I upgrade goal and hope the young D can step up and steal ice time and/or sign a top 4 righty.
I think this team could push for a playoff spot next season but the key for me is the cap space created for the following year.
My forward lines:
Draisaitl-McD-Kassian
Ryan-RNH-Puljujarvi
Kharia-Johansson-Chaisson
Rattie-Cave-Gagner
Of course training camp will help here but this is my first look. And, for different games Drai can be moved to 2nd line etc, etc
The only long term signing I might contemplate would be NYI’s Nelson or Lee at 6mil x 7yrs.
I’d also try to bring back Slepyshev but I believe he signed for 2 in the KHL.
The baby blue (farm team) stay stacked with potentially positive in-season fill-ins.
But around 20 mil in cap space the following season after Nurse is resigned long term. That’s good sh*t.
Also, I go after Quenneville for coach.
Anyhoo, work the problem they say...</div></div>
I like most of this, I’d look at trading Brodziak, Kassian and Benning for anything. Replacing them with Brassard in that 2.5-3 mill range for 3rd line center, move johansson to the wing, bring Marody and Jones up. Also don’t think Rattie costs you a mill and I thing Khaira costs you a little more than a mill.

I think if you told Melnyk how much money you could save him by taking the 3 other contracts back it may tickle his fancy. I don’t think Lucic would accept the trade if he had to stay in Ottawa. By all accounts it seems like MacArthur and Gaborik are done as far as playing hockey goes.

Oilers 19-20 Take 2
I like this if the other teams were game, in a perfect world you sign a cheap veteran to play where you have Yamamoto (keep him developing) and trade sekera while retaining 2 to 3 mill and trade russell retaining 1 mill or so. That way you could maybe get later round picks and have their cap hits off the books in a couple years vs 4.

In that case you could bring Marody in Yamamoto’s spot, gives you a bit more maturity. Trade Kassian for cap savings and sign a 3rd line LW, or trade Kassian for equal value LW to take Bensens spot, Rattie draws in Kassian’s spot.
