Stanley Cup Leafs
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>RC_82</b></div><div>I wouldn't touch that philly deal tho... Rasmus at 5x5? yuck... </div></div>
Yea, if we are going for big, RHD that will throw hits but struggle as a dman I would rather see if CLB wants out of the Gudbranson deal because he is all that BUT can fight if needed. They have him playing way more minutes then he should. 3 games ago against Dallas he played 24:58 in regulation after playing 24:01 the game before and 24:17 the game before that. In fact he hasn't played under 20 minutes since January.
Gudbranson is drowning with the 1st pairing minutes covering the leagues best forwards rather than the 3rd pairing minutes he played in Calgary. Dubas should offer them Holl who is a bit better defenseman that CLB can re-sign or let walk this summer for getting them out of the last 3 years of Gudbranson... so thay also have $1 MIL retained. Not quite the Zaitsev trade but....the Leafs could then offer the 2023 3rd round pick (TOR) used in the Ristolainen deal for a 3rd team to retain $1 MIL for the final 3 years of Gudbranson's contract. Oh...and I might include Joey Anderson for <a href="/users/Hammerwise" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">@Hammerwise</a> :)
Get Gudbrabson back on the 3rd pair with 3rd pair minutes:
Rielly / Brodie
Sandin / Liljegren
Giordano / Gudbranson
Scratch: Timmons, Benn
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>RC_82</b></div><div>I like the addition of jeannot but don't think that deal gets it done. yes he is having a bad year but hes an RFA which automatically means hes more valuable because the team has control next season</div></div>
Adding Jeannot would neutalize Frederic and Hathaway on Boston as well as Perry and Maroon on TBay. I had posted this last July 9th when somebody was mentioning Tanner Jeannot:
“I am probably one of the biggest Jeannot homers on this web site but I am not sure if you realize that he only had one point from April 1st to the end of the season on April 29th. That is 15 games...yup...15 games.
In the playoffs he only had 1 assist and was -4. “
I understand that he looks like a UNICORN but last season he had an insane 19.4 S% after riding a 21.7 S% the 15 games he played at the end of 20-21. Currently he has 5 goals and a 5.8 S% which is probably half of what it should be. If he had a 11.0 S% and 10-12 goals a season then he would be a solid 3rd liner that plays the pk and is a light-heavyweight fighter. That package *might* get him but I think it could require a better set of picks.

Stats-wise:
McCabe 29 years old @ $4 MIL/year
52 2 15 17 +2 25 pims 106 hits
Sandin 22 years old @ $1.4 MIL/year
50 4 14 18 +6 23 pims 113 hits
I would be EXTREMELY disappointed if Dubas added all that cap and old age of McCabe no matter what the Chicago faithful think.
Sandin has more offensive upside than McCabe has ever shown. Sandin is probably the Leafs hardest hitter as well.

I hear you. I guess IMO Murray's "Away" games have shown him as a solid goalie with slight struggles in the "Home" games. I have actually been pleasantly surprised by his play this season after watching him in Ottawa which were horrible.
The 2 questions Leaf fans (and I guess hockey fans in general) had were 1) could Murray show himself as a solid goalie again...which I believe he has... and 2) could he remain healthy...which I believe he has answered that question too...unfortunately.

Pursue a rental like Bernier or go back to OTT for Talbot after dumping Murray</div></div>
I think Leafs Asst GM Pridham might have considered the possibility of Murray's cap hit hurting the Leafs because his buyout this summer leaves the Leafs with only a $687,500 Cap Hit from his initial $4,687,500 Cap Hit. It's crazy but if the Leafs simply buy him out they would save $4 MIL on the Cap.

I really don't want to sound disrespectful as I am just trying to be honest but...
If we were trading Holl and a 3rd for a bottom pairing RHD with retention I would rather try CLB and $4 MIL man Gudbranson. I would see if they would retain $1 MIL for Holl and simply getting out of that horrible contract. I would then get a 3rd team retain $1 MIL for the 3rd pick.
They are about the same defensively (read: kind of bad) but Gudbranson plays tougher and is an under rated fighter if the need arises.

That pick could be close to Toronto's 2nd Round Pick but it is tempting. I think I would do that. I think I would rather trade Toronto's 2023 3rd Round or 2025 2nd Round but whatever. Let's make a deal
Edit:
Thinking about it I would say that an older 4th liner is probably worth a 5th or at most a 4th but that would require some retention. Ottawa's 3rd Round pick then have to retain 50% and a 6th Round pick

I would sign Samsonov to a reasonable 2-3 year contract ($3.5 MIL??) and buy out Murray. Murray's cap hit on a buy out would only be $687,500 next year. $2 MIL the following year but the cap will be going up anyway.

If they keep Meier I think they will need an ELC contract in their top 6 next year and after, maybe Robertson can fill in for next year though.</div></div>
I have been thinking the same thing. I wish we knew what he had in Knies. Is he Jimmy Vesey or Alex Galchenyuk?? Niederreiter or Barbeshev?? Maybe Knies is going to be a Meier....but at a huge savings.
I suspect he would have to be included in a Meier trade. You would probably have to choose between Nylander and Meier after next season. Both will probably get $8.5 MIL a season for 7-8 years on their next contracts.
The KEY to keeping the forwards together would be to sign Bunting to a $4 MIL contract, Meier to an $8.5 MIL contract...and then buyout Murray for a cap hit of only $667,000 next season. That would save $4 MIL in cap savings!!
The following seasons would be tough to keep Nylander, Meier, Marner, Matthews and still have room to sign McDavid when he becomes a UFA.

I think the closest comparison in the league is Oleksiak. .25 ppg compared to Muzzins almost ,5 ppg but throws 50% more hits and is 6'7" 255 lbs compared to Muzzin's 6'3" 217 lbs.
Oleksiak is 30 years old and takes 4.6% of the cap compared to Muzzin's 4.9% when he was traded for. The question is would you offer Seattle the same package offered LA for Muzzin?

adding physicality
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>RipNasty</b></div><div>The thing about a Muzzin type defenceman is Muzzin was actually good both ways and also was physical. Schenn and Gudas are both physical but suck at everything else in hockey. Neither are good skaters, both have no offence to add and both of them, despite a cap friendly reputation to the contrary, aren't overly good at defending.</div></div>
The defense is the toughest position to correct in my opinion.
Muzzin is a physical 6'3" 217 lbs LHD that averaged approximately 2 hits a game and had an offensive upside of approximately 0.5 ppg. He was just about to turn 30 when the Leafs acquired him and his 5.8% Cap hit at the time would be equivalent to approximately $4.9 MIL with an additional year left. Not sure who replaces him in the league currently (LHD or RHD) . There is certainly no Leaf that can replace that role. I feel we need to find some way to replace Muzzin but....what current dman in the league born around 1992 that is 6'3"+ 217+ lbs who plays physical and scores at a 0,5 ppg pace while being signed for around $5.0 MIL this year and next?
And who do we move to get that fiction dman?
- Rielly has struggled on and off for a few years (not sure what the advanced stats say) but now has a NMC for 8 years at $7.5 MIL. He's not going anywhere.
- Giordano took a MASSIVE pay cut to play in TO and has been playing great. He's not going anywhere.
- Brodie is owed $7.5 MIL in real money next season and has an NTC. He's not going anywhere.
- Benn is a 6'2" LD that can play both sides on a league minimum contract. He's not going anywhere.
- Dubas just acquired 6'2" RD Timmins who is still under team control as an RFA. He's not going anywhere.
- Sandin and Liljegren are young with decent talent. They might be traded but being the youngest players in the top 6 by a country mile. I think they're not going anywhere.
That leaves UFA Holl on a rental contract to move but he might not get back his current value to the Leafs so I am not sure if he should be moved or not.

Schenn plays with intelligence typically within his limitations and rarely hurts his team with his actions where Gudas usually plays in a way that hurts his team but sometimes works.
I was going to suggest that Schenn would be a better player for that style of play and the Leafs style of play

I actually will take a Hyman over anybody not named McDavid in the Oilers room. The only other person I would take in that room again not named McDavid is Neuge.</div></div>
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>RipNasty</b></div><div>Hyman gets the vast majority of his points due to McDavid. As he ages and moves lower in the lineup, he'll be a 30 point winger making 5.5 million.</div></div>
I agree with a lot that you post but I think you are mistaken here. He will be 35 when his contract season is done...and about to turn 36 that June admittedly...but his relentless puck retrieval, skating and physical engagement has NOTHING to do with McDavid. Like Timmins pointed out he is already at 20 goals, is at over a ppg, has over a hit a game for HALF the contract of Tavares. Hyman was still trending up as a Leaf and was rumoured to be willing to take $5 MIL a season with the Leafs. Hyman and Bunting on the top 2 lines would have been great with the Core 4.
Very few UFA players have I wished that Dubas kept. Hyman is one of them though.

Suggestions Megathread
Wondering if there is a way (or could be a way) to take an ACGM and have it copied to the next year.
For instance I made a Leafs ACGM with some traded players that had term and was wondering if the same roster would be able to be loaded for next season without having to start with a fresh team and going back to re-create all the trades I had made. Even having the rental players that you have traded for that became UFAs listed with your new team as UFAs might be nice when re-creating the next season's team.
I hope that I am not just lazy... :)
