Hard pass on Kuznetsov for a 1st(+). Give the 3C job to Marat (or anyone else really) as that’s a much better option than a one-way player who’s a questionable lockeroom addition.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>WJC_Enthusiast</b></div><div>Oh I know, I know there was no good option there but what they should've done was a 2-3 year retool starting in the 2021 offseason, and ending in the 2024 offseason, and then it would've been time for them to compete again.</div></div>
That’s essentially what’s happening anyways. They have basically all their picks, a top ranked prospect pool, young players graduating to the team and playoffs are still within reach after major injuries and a horrendous start
A retool/rebuild (ownership isn’t interested in the latter) changes nothing when it comes to the teams long term outlook and cap situation. Guerin has built a consistent playoff team with an emphasis on having a great culture in the room. That’s harder to do when you’re swapping pieces out for younger inexperienced players
TLDR:
- ownership has no interest in a rebuild
- a retool only lowers the team’s average age and likely doesn’t build the culture management wants, nor does it change how successful the team has been the past few years
- swapping out older players for younger players isn’t as important when you have a top ranked prospect pool that will be graduating multiple pieces in the same timeframe that you would I’ve envisioned
Basically, retool or rebuild while ideal, wasn’t fully on the table nor was is necessary to build a team with a strong longterm outlook

I didn’t say they’d be a losing team the second they started to cool off. I’m just willing to accept the possibility of their cool down and other teams’ bouncebacks potentially knocking them out of playoff positioning come seasons end.
Even during this run for Vancouver, they’ve given up the 4th most high danger chances against per game. No playoff team of the past 5 years has given up as many HDCF per game as Vancouver has so far this year. They need to improve defensively if they can’t keep killing the league in shooting percentage, which you simply can not realistically expect.

If petterson wants out
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Juiceman</b></div><div>Have you ever thought about the fact that the Canucks winning against them is a reason they are below 0.500? Canucks have played half their games against teams who were considered cup contenders at the start of the year. I don’t expect them to continue to be at the top of the league, but let’s not pretend the Canucks are simply getting lucky</div></div>
I get your point but it only slightly weakens mine. Take the Canucks games out all of those teams records, the Canucks wins still mainly come from losing teams. The goal differential even more so. And that’s not their fault, you play the games listed on the schedule. But I’m not going to act as if I believe the Canucks are going to continue shooting at a 15.5% clip and saving 93.6% of pucks.
Basically, I’m not going to expect their goal differential and record to stay at the top of the league when every metric and my eyes are telling me, it’s not sustainable. Talented team on an absolute heater, but once their top guys start to slow down and become human again, I’m worried that the makeup of the team could potentially lead to them being a streaky team. Which in a worst case scenario after a start like this, leads them to missing playoffs.
Am I predicting they miss playoffs right now? Absolutely not. To me they had a good shot at playoffs before the season and now they’re in prime position to make playoffs as a team that has finally had a good start, which is something they’ve missed greatly the past two seasons with how they’ve been able to make up ground towards the end of the year
TLDR:
Great start, unsustainable numbers. They need to improve defensively and challenge goalies with more volume (more volume ≠ more shots for the sake of taking more shots) so they can keep the scoring up and the goals against down. T
With how crazy their start has been, there’s a word in which that comedown to normal level is so drastic, that they fall out of playoff positioning by seasons end, thus triggering a Petey trade demand

The trade itself is bad. The idea that Petey may end up wanting out is still very possible as Petey still seems to be waiting to make a decision. He already has all the leverage he needs to get his bag.
Vancouver over preforming so far and still has a 1–2-1 record against teams with a .500 point’s percentage/teams in the top 20 in the standings right now

If Vancouver does end up missing playoffs again and Petey says “screw it, trade me” it will take a hell of a lot more than that to get it done.
Eichel was arguably traded for more than this and Buffalo didn’t have the leverage that Vancouver would

Possible TDL moves
It’s a steep price for Novak but if Rossi doesn’t take the necessary steps and Guerin wants some added offensive juice for cheap, contract wise, I can see a world where something along these lines is possible. Especially if Leipold is becoming inpatient with the lack of playoff success but I’m sure he understands the limitations of how successful the team can be under the Parise/Suter buyouts. (Thanks Chuck)
Most likely tho, it’ll be the same old lower end acquisitions were used to as Guerin has been a fairly careful and calculated GM. His biggest TDL move that brought in a player for MN was the Fleury trade and I think part of the reason he was willing to pay a conditional 2nd was because he knew he’d be getting at least one more in the offseason from letting Filip Johansson go and trading Jack McBain

Hyman was one of the last names taken off the list, I counted Nuge as more of a center, they all have issues defensively and Kane needs to play and produce more than he did last year. They also suffer from the McDavid/Drai tax as almost anyone can produce on their wings and PP. they all would be at least in the conversation for top 40 if not top 35 so it’s not like they weren’t thought of

Top 30 Wingers
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Ledge_And_Dairy</b></div><div>I'm sorry but did you just call Tkachuk the 6th best skater in the league? Tkachuk is probably my favourite player in the league but he is closer to the 6th worst skater in the league than he is 6th best. His "great 2-way play" comes from his work along the boards between the hash marks and the blue line. I am not calling him bad defensively but he is not skating around the defensive zone stealing pucks from the opponent (unless you count for when he goes and body checks someone down low removing both him and the victim from the play). He is an expert at making breakout passes when his center and defensemen retrieve the puck down low, along with very good spatial awareness and gap control in the neutral zone. If we are talking about overall 2-way game Stone is by far the best, followed by Marchand and Marner. due to their abilities interrupt shooting lanes and intercept passes. I would even put Matt Boldy above Tkachuk in that manner. Matthew Tkachuk's very defensively aware but he is extremely hindered by his well below average foot speed so he can never be a bonafide PKer.
As for Tkachuk's production a lot of it comes from having top notch hand-eye coordination. He's probably the best net front deflector in the league next to Pavelski and Stone. He's a good playmaker with great vision too but he is not the guy who can quarterback a powerplay like Kaprizov, Kucherov, Marner, Panarin, Gaudreau, Pastrnak, Marchand, etc. He's ok at that job on the half wall but he is by far best in the net front/bumper spot.
IMO he should absolutely be in a top tier but certainly not in a tier of his own. Obviously Tkachuk has intangibles but it's not that different from what we saw in prime Perry.</div></div>
Skater as in Forward/Defenceman, not actual skating ability. I also didn’t claim he was an elite two-way player nor better than Stone in that regard. And while we’re talking about Stone, he would be a few spots higher if health wasn’t an issue. He has one of the best defensive sticks in hockey. I would agree with all the names you put above Matty Tkachuk in that regard.
I would put him in his own tier for the reasons I listed as well as the fact that he’s really the only winger that is pretty much a consensus top 10 player right now. Everyone in the second tier will be put just outside of the top 10 or lower in most lists.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Canucks33</b></div><div>I don't think M. Tkachuk deserves to be a tier ahead of Kucherov. They should both be at the the top.
Keller and B. Tkachuk are the first two that I would promote from the third tier. Marchand would be at the bottom of tier 2.
If Kuzmenko shows that last year was not a one off then he get's on the list. He'd be one of the most creative players in tier 3.</div></div>
I wouldn’t put Kuch in the same tier as Tkachuk. I think Tkucher is in a tier of his own when it comes to wingers right now and the 6th best skater in the league. He’s a great two-way guy and easily capable of 40+ and 110+ and his impact goes further than than just numbers or defence. He didn’t even need to get on the scoresheet to be the biggest reason why Florida clutched up in games 6&7. No one else is doing that right now. As for Kuch, I think this years Kuch is what we can expect in a full season from here on out. Very elite player, obviously, but 30-110+ with not too much of a two-way impact isn’t enough to put him in tier one imo. And that’s a big reason why he’s placed 6th here. The guys above him just bring that extra juice when it comes to goals and/or two way game. Marner’s about the same level goalscorer, a bit behind as a playmaker but miles ahead in the two-way game. The rest of the guys in front of him are better goalscorers most definitely capable of 100+ point seasons and outside of Pasta, better two way guys as well. Robo is also a better goalscorer capable of 100+ points.
And as for Brady, Keller and Kuz moving up a tier, I would like to hold off until I see more of what they did this past season. Neither Brady or Keller are bonafide 90+ scorers or anything to write home about in the two way game and Kuzmenko while basically dropping 40 and being a decent two-way impact, scored a lot of those goals on tips. I want to see if he can repeat that and prove that it is just part of his game. High tip numbers are historically very hard to replicate year-year

Mitts had a good year, but I wouldn’t pay that price. To me, Mitts tops out as a really good offensive 2C. If Stramel can figure out his own offensive game, he might top out as a 2C as well. Adding Lambos -the team’s best LHD prospect which they’ll need relatively soon- is too much of an add when we’ve learned that Kaprizov can basically make anyone productive
I think MN should be targeting a star in a couple years before they pay a price like this Mitts. Maybe Mitts stays healthy and hits 70 this year and he’s worth it but I have my doubts
