I see. Well, the way your post had started, I was not overly surprised it finished with yelling.
That said, can you point me towards your reference regarding the insurance v. Carey's contract? Or are signing bonuses not covered? I could not find a reference that makes this crystal clear.

Wow. Someone need to pour themselves some chamomile. Can't we just have a civilized discussion?
I might have underestimated the value of Jeannot to you (sorry, his numbers don't scream success). And frankly, we don't need him; I thought you needed the cap space. The main point of the swap (as indicated by the title of the trade) is that Price's larger LTIR would allow you to get a decently paid goalie (even if it were not Allen) •and* reactivate Vasilevskiy when he's ready.
BUT HEY, IF YOU JUST WANT TO SHOW THAT YOU CAN USE CAPSLOCK INSTEAD OF DISCUSSING, THAT'S YOUR RIGHT!

Habs 23-24 Cap Compliance
The rulebook reads as follows:
There may be a maximum of 23 players on each Club’s playing roster at any one time from the commencement of the NHL regular season through the trade deadline. Prior to the start of the season, each Club must submit to the NHL its “Opening Day Playing Roster” which shall be comprised of not more than 23 players. Each Club must have a roster of at least 20 players, composed of 18 skaters and two goaltenders. Players on Injured Reserve do not count in the 23-man limit.
Does this mean that the roster above is short 1 skater (since I have 3 goalies)?

Habs 23-24 Cap Compliance
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>pinslack</b></div><div>do you know if roster size have to be 23/23 including Price when we put him on in season LTIR?
Anyhow, Armia and Pearson could be put on waivers to make things work. And even Allen maybe</div></div>
Minimum roster size is 20 players. Price does not counts when on the IR or the LTIR. There was an interesting discussion this morning in the The Athletic about perf bonuses: https://theathletic.com/4880610/2023/09/19/canadiens-trade-tanner-pearson-jeff-petry/
In a nutshell, penciling Slaf to Laval is not a very good idea, because when he'd be called back, his potential bonuses (the 3.5M in parentheses above) would count against the cap. When the player starts the season in the NHL, bonuses can be carried forward to the next year if needed; if he starts in the AHL, they can't. Guhle, Harris, and Barron's bonuses are less problematic in terms of LTIR buffer.
So I guess, yeah, some sizeable salary must be waived. But Hughes wants to establish a reputation of being fair with his player. He won't waive Allen on the first year of a contract that Hughes signed himself.

Oh! Another iteration at the Guhle for Bouchard trade. Just now, you decided that you don't like the Oilers anymore ;P
The Habs are indeed being overpaid in this iteration :) And the Canes are in win-now mode; the Oilers late first is worth nothing to them, so they are definitely being ripped.

Canucks - Sharks - Habs Centres
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>IjustNEEDaTROYgamble</b></div><div>Beauvillier is a francophone from Quebec and is the youngest player in the trade and only has 1 year left on his contract while both habs players have 2 clearing a combined $8,000,000 in cap space for next season</div></div>
The 8M number means nothing. It's 3M, accounting for Garland's 4.95M. So, Habs send out a C and a D, both having clear roles on the team when seasons starts, to get two wingers they don't need and 3M cap room next summer. But wait, Dvo is a 3rd center who's very decent at the faceoff circle. If the Habs really need 3M next summer, they can trade him at the deadline with 32.6% cap retention. And then they would still have Savard at a team-friendly 3.5M with little term on his contract... This plan just fits much better with where the team stands at this point. Again, this was not a bad trade suggestion, I am just saying I'd be very surprised (and negatively so) if Hughes did this at this juncture.

3 way deal
There's just too much nonsense thrown around about Petry. Yes, he is not the top-pairing RD he once was, but he still got value and a contender would pay much more than a 5th to have him at 2.35M. Hughes would not touch this trade on worst day.

Hmm... Not every day that I have to think long and hard about a trade posted here ;) I'll let SJ's fans assess their side of the deal, but the value is not that bad for Montreal. Dvorak is more useful than people give him credit for, but his contract is not optimal to say the least. But in the end, Savard could probably fetch a better return around a trade deadline, and he is a French Canadian that is happy to bring a veteran presence on a D corp that needs it badly. Hughes is working hard to give more ice time to the upcoming crop of forward, so I don't think he'd take two small wingers for a center and a D. Nice try though ;)

Despite all the nonsense that can be read on some comment sections, Petry still has value, especially at 4.69M. I don't think Ceci has any. So the 2nd rounder does not offset for the fact that we virtually gaining no cap room here.
And I would be surprised if any other Canadian team than Montreal were not on Petry's trade list.

I can easily live with that. We can dream big but we're not getting a kings ransom for Monahan if we get anything at all. We get another 1st for essentially next to nothing, MTL would be stupid to decline.</div></div>
You don't trade a guy you just signed as a UFA before he even stepped foot on the ice. That's terrible optics for future UFAs. At the trade deadline, for a contender, Monahan will be happy to pack. For now, he wanted to stay put. And he will.

As a Habs and Oilers Fan I approve
I don't think the Habs should do this trade, especially not with cap retention (or sending picks away). I think both Guhle and Bouchard have a great future ahead of them, and yes we'd swap a LD for a (Québécois) RD, but the latter is 2 years older, and Guhle was already producing at Bouchard's pace before his injury last year. So we loose 2 good years before having to deal with a potential UFA.

EK to PIT Petry to Detroit
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>glarson17</b></div><div>You have an Jose retaining $18 mil here, they are actually retaining a 1/3 of that</div></div>
Interesting point but (i) most of the savings are in the next two year on Petry's deal. But SJ won't be anywhere near competitive during those years and (ii) these savings are somewhat offset this year by taking two bad contracts. So, really, the only way this was a good trade for SJ is if there was a material fear that EK's contract would unmovable if he were to suffer the slightest injury. That's a very valid concern, but I hope we can agree the return was nonetheless quite underwhelming.

I'm not fully clear on Pickering's worth. Maybe one first if I am overestimating the prospect. Three... well let's see, but I'd be shocked. Karlsson is a great offensive D, but his contract, with four years left (!), is still quite the gamble for a 33-yo who managed a -26 plus-or-minus despite having 101 points. If he is indeed worth this deal + 3 first, Pittsburg should pass. Their rebuild is already going to be brutal given how much their prospect + picks pool is depleted; such a deal for Karlsson would just cement a decade of mediocrity after the core declines IMO.
