No. Because it's Pearson and $5.25 million in extra cap room.

Vancouver Canucks signed Vasily Podkolzin (2 Years / $1,000,000 AAV)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>mv21227</b></div><div>Obviously hasn’t been what you’d hope out of a 10OA pick, but he’s been pretty solid defensively and physically since being called up this year. This is my thought as well.
Worst case: He's overpaid by $225,000 for a shutdown 4th liner.
Most likely case: He's back to scoring 10+ goals and is a physical presence on the 3rd line earning well more than his paycheck.
Best case: Hoglander like breakout.

Who is voting no? He's still an RFA at the end of this contract and it is a 100% buriable contract. He's solid defensively and got better in that regard as the season went along. He's snake bit when it comes to scoring, but if he can to bounce back to his rookie season then this contract will be worth it.

He's also a locker room cancer who makes others on the team worse. So no, he would not make Montreal better. Especially not at $8.5 million a season. It's one of the worst contracts in the league, so no team is better off with him.

Vegas Golden Knights signed Noah Hanifin (8 Years / $7,350,000 AAV)
In a vacuum, this is a good signing. HOWEVER, Vegas has almost no cap space left for next year and they need to sign at least two more players. Something is going to have to give. Either they buyout someone, pay to give away a contract, or they are left with a 20-man roster and every injury leaves them shorthanded.

First 100-point season in his career and his on-ice goal differential is just shy of 30 ABOVE expected. I wonder how many people still think this is a bad deal?

He's played 191 games and scored 20 points and he's actually below that average this season. Yes, his on-ice goal differential is 5.3 above expected this year, but this is the first year is it above expected.
This is the kind of player you can grab at league min during free agency.
Maybe he going to have a break out season next year, but he could also be player who is a healthy scratch many nights.

He's been an offensive black whole his entire career and this is the first season he's been okay defensively. I would not have paid more than $1.15 million, because that's the maximum buriable amount. That said, the contract is fine.

Confirmed: (PHI / WPG) 2016 1st round pick (22)/2016 2nd round pick (36) - for 2016 1st round pick (18)/2016 3rd round pick (79)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>KSIxSKULLS</b></div><div>Trade value wise, in terms of those draft picks. All the picks busted, but the pick value was good for Philly</div></div>
According to Zipf's law, Philly's combined picks were worth a 13.65 overall pick, while what Winnipeg got was worth 14.65. Close, but Philly did a little better. Only Logan Stanley has a chance of playing another NHL game, but even then, he's likely going to sign for league min 1-year contract hoping to prove he can play and stay healthy.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Andy_Dick</b></div><div>It’s weird that you think they lost anything ...</div></div>
I'm not saying they lost, not even close. After all, Mike Hoffman was a cap dump and Rem Pitlick is a slightly overpaid injury call-up. They gave up nothing they wanted to keep and got back assets. I'm just saying they didn't win by as much as people first thought they did. They turned three of those assets into a 3rd, a 4th, and an AHLer. THIS trade was a win, but everything since then has been a miss.
On the other hand, it is very likely Kyle Dubas will be forced to blow up the Penguins next year and that 2024 pick will turn into a very high 2025 pick. The plurality of people picked Pittsburgh as the winner here and I think a lot of them are regretting that vote, especially if they have to pay assets to get rid of Erik Karlsson.

I wonder if most people still think Pittsburgh won this trade.
Erik Karlsson is not living up to that contract, not even close. Plus, that 1st rounder will be a LOT better than expected, so much so that it might not happen this year. It's top ten protected and they are 9th worst right now. If it is not top-ten protected next year and the team doesn't do something major, then this could be a disaster.
Meanwhile, San Jose took on three bad contracts and two of them have actually done well enough this year to earn their paychecks. If they hit on that 1st, then they've easily won.
Montreal traded away all three players they got, so it is really hard to tell how well they did in the trade. For example, Casey DeSmith is playing awesome this year, but they don't have him. They have the very under-performing Pearson and a 3rd in 2025. That's bad, but can you deduct points on this trade?

On the one hand, I agree they likely won't play in the NHL.
On the other hand, you need AHL defencemen as well and the Canucks have plenty of empty contract spaces for next year.
It's a 100% buriable contract that didn't cost a single asset to sign.

Who is voting no on this? He's on a 20-goal, 40-point pace this year and his on-ice goal differential is 5.8 ABOVE expected, and this is with limited ice time. Now that he's proven himself, that ice time, and the production, will go up. You would spend nearly $3 million on a player like this and the Leafs have him for half that for two years.

Normally I would be fine with this, but Boston only has one more contract space and since this player isn't going to make the NHL this year, it seems like a waste.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Andy_Dick</b></div><div>You’re talking like Hertl is ancient. 30 ain’t old.</div></div>
Peak for NHL forwards is 28-29. By 32, they tend to have a serious drop off. Furthermore, he's not that good right now. He's a 60-point centre who isn't good defensively.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Andy_Dick</b></div><div>Your reasoning is basically give nothing up ever for anyone because they can age out.</div></div>
No, my reasoning is this:
1.) He's not living up to his contract now. He's not even living up to the reduced contract Vegas has to pay.
2.) He's 30 already, which is past the peak for an NHL forward and this already bad contract has six more years on it.
3.) You don't give up a 1st and a solid prospect for a bad contract, not even with two 3rds coming back.
