I would agree with this, except Toronto got a player who had chemistry the last time he was there and got him for UNDER league minimum. Luke Schenn cost more and they paid a 4th, so that's not a bad deal.

Vancouver Canucks signed Elias Pettersson (8 Years / $11,600,000 AAV)
The Canucks have just over $27 million to sign the rest of their NHL UFA / RFAs.
Those 10 players cost $28.45 million this year. Some will get raises (Hronek); others will get pay cuts (Myers); some will be lost to free agency (Lindholm).
However, for the first time in years, the Canucks are not going to be in cap hell starting the off season.

(CGY/DAL/NJD) - Tanev for Grushnikov, 2024 2nd (DAL), 2026 4th (DAL), 2026 3rd (DAL) for Brady
Wow. Dallas easily wins this one. Craig Conroy needs to be fired.
Dallas gets Tanev for barely more than $1 million. They give up a 2nd, 3rd, and a 4th. Artem Grushnikov isn't doing well enough in the AHL to suggest he will be an impact player in the NHL. Meanwhile, Cole Brady will likely become a free agent in August.
Jersey got a 4th for $1.125 million in cap space. That's not bad. I would be happy with that.

He only has 3 points in 16 games, but his on-ice goal differential is 7.2 above expected. That's excellent. Every team would love such a stellar defensive defenceman for just over $2 million.

Tarasenko's cap hit is $5 million.
Monahan's is $2 million.
That matters when it comes to trade value. Cap hit is the reason Calgary gave up a 1st round pick to get rid of him in the first place.

This came out on the 1st. Monahan is ranked the second biggest trade target.

In a vacuum, this is a fair deal. A 1st and a 3rd for the second best forward available (after Lindholm) would be good during most trade deadlines. However, Montreal was paid a 1st to take him and then signed him to a reasonable contract and then traded him away for another first and a third. Yeah, they WIN the overall transaction, even though Winnipeg are not the losers here. Calgary is certainly the loser here.

Having said that, Vancouver actually looks really good from a cap perspective next year to extend Petterson AND Hronek AND Lindholm along with their other RFA/key UFAs.</div></div>
Yep. The Canucks now have much more cap space and only need to sign a few key players. It's not longer a case of how many supporting players are they going to lose. They have close to $40 million to sign Petterson and Hronek, maybe Lindholm, but those will cost a lot and Lindholm will likely leave.
Myers will take a pay cut or leave. Same with Zadorov and likely Ian Cole.
Then you have 4 forwards, 2 defencemen, and a back-up goalie. Most deserve a raise, none of which will be paid more than $2 million. Some will be under $1 million.
They might be able to keep everyone.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>areax91</b></div><div>It's hard to say whether Kuzmenko will rebound to his freshman year. But even so, two defensive prospects, a 2024 1st and a 4th in itself is a massive overpay for Lindholm. Lindholm is a top 6 player, sure, but worth a 1st, a 4th, and Brzustewicz who projects to be an NHL-caliber offensive defenseman?! For a forward who should be a 2nd and a 3rd or maybe a 1st round alone? Holy overpay Batman, the Flames are making out this one like bandits.</div></div>
It's not two defensive prospects.
Joni Jurmo is struggling in Liiga and likely won't get signed to an ELC. He almost certainly will never make it past the AHL.
Hunter Brzustewicz is on pace for 100 points in the OHL this year. Only 10 other defencemen have done that. ... Only 4 of those played more than 100 games in the NHL. Scouting just dropped and he's projected to be a 3rd-pair defencemen, not a star NHL player.
The 3rd only happens if the Canucks make it to the Conference Finals, which means the Canucks had a relatively good playoffs and they will be happy with the trade. Otherwise it's a 4th. Either way, the odds of them becoming an impact player in the NHL are slim.
It will be a late first in a shallow draft.
Andrei Kuzmenko's cap hit next year was going to hurt the chances of the Canucks signing Pettersson to a long-term deal.
It's a lot of pieces, but nothing critical for the Canucks. If the Flames get lucky, then two of those pieces will hit. If not, then they likely lost this trade.

IMO, the answer is a resounding yes.
This is a home run for the Flames.
Calgary win the trade.</div></div>
As a Canucks fan, I would be dancing in the street if the trade was Lindholm was Kuzmenko + Raty + 2024 1st.
Kuzmenko is under performing by nearly $2 million this year and he's still being paid $5.5 million next year.
Räty is doing well in the AHL, given his age, but he's far from a sure thing to make it to the NHL right now.
A late 1st would be the only real piece of that trade.
Lindholm for Hunter and a 1st, plus moving out from Kuzmenko's contract is a fair deal. (The other two pieces are mostly meaningless.)

Andrei Kuzmenko wasn't living up to his contract and I doubt things were going to get better, so the Canucks losing him isn't a real loss.

Andrei Kuzmenko is being overpaid and wasn't fitting in with the team, so that's not a huge loss.
Hunter Brzustewicz is having a monster season in the OHL, so that's a loss.
The 1st will be early 20s at best, which is still something.
Joni Jurmo will very likely never sign an NHL contract. Not sure why they were even included.
4th round pick is usually nothing.
Two real assets for Elias Lindholm and $650,000 less this year and even more savings next year to give to Petey.
Fair trade.
