Vancouver Canucks signed Pius Suter (2 Years / $1,600,000 AAV)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Leafsfan98</b></div><div>*offensively*</div></div>
Both really. 4 goals and 4 assists in 45 games is not worth $2.4 million. Hell, it's barely worth minimum wage and an NHL spot. ... And the Leafs will be paying him that for the next three seasons.
With so much money going to the big four, the Leafs can't afford to miss on ANY depth player. Missing this badly for this long is devastating.

Toronto Maple Leafs signed David Kämpf (4 Years / $2,400,000 AAV)
This signing has turned into a disaster. He's on his worst points per game pace of his career and he's been bad defensively as well. Some nights, he looks like he should be in the AHL.

You were close on the Matthews one, but were well off on Nylander.
The Leafs have less than $22 million cap space and need to sign AT LEAST 8 players, but really need 11. I can't see how they are going to do that.

On the other hand, San Jose is a weaker team and maybe Studnicka will get a call up and do okay.
</div></div>
A month later and he wasn't able to stick around in San Jose. This is a Canucks win, but I feel bad for Studnicka. He worked really hard this off season and it looked like he would turn his career around and become a steady NHLer.

We may have found out last week why Toronto didn't make the trade. They wanted him and Tanev, but needed Calgary to retain salary and Calgary was unwilling to do that. Their Big 4 are being paid way too much to upgrade anywhere else. And next year it will be even worse.

Signing your 3rd round pick mere months after drafting them is unusual. They had two years to sign him to an ELC. That said, he's doing really well in the WHL this season, so the Canucks seemed to have made the right decision.

Vancouver Canucks signed Pius Suter (2 Years / $1,600,000 AAV)
Suter has been weirdly good at scoring goals (12 goals and only 4 assists) and he's been great defensively for being a 3rd / 4th liner. Easy win for the Canucks. You could pay him twice as much and it would still be an okay deal.
On the other hand, David Kampf has been defensively unplayable at times.

Vancouver Canucks signed Nils Höglander (2 Years / $1,100,000 AAV)
He could score 40 points this season and has been amazing defensively. This is one of the best contracts on the team right now and we get him for another year and he's still an RFA after that.

Vancouver Canucks signed Ian Cole (1 Year / $3,000,000 AAV)
We are more than halfway through the season and this turned out to be a solid signing. He's not much of a factor offensively, but he's been better than expected defensively and with the number of injuries the Canucks have had on defence, he's played an important part.

That's a statement I'm sure he would love to take back
Soucy's been injured a lot, but he's playing at a $5 million pace.
Holl's been playing at a $1 million pace.
I'm happy with this signing, even with the injuries.

Philadelphia Flyers signed Owen Tippett (8 Years / $6,200,000 AAV)
It would have been an overpayment last season, but not by a huge margin. $5 million would have been about right.
However, his defence has improved A LOT going from an on-ice goal differential of 20 below expected to about 6 or 7 below expected for the same games played.
If he continues to improve, then this will be an absolutely bargain in a few years and even at the end, when he's likely playing worse, it will still be really good.

It might not be for nothing. Last year, the Vancouver Canucks send Wyatt Kalynuk to the New York Rangers for 'future considerations'. At the same time, the ABBOTSFORD Canucks got Zach Giuttari from the Hartford Wolf Pack, again for 'future considerations'.
This might be the case here. Or maybe Buffalo just want to free up a contract slot to take on retained salary during the trade deadline.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>jpsnow13</b></div><div>Some Buffalo fans are outrageous... Voting for a future considerations win, seriously?</div></div>
It could be an NHL / AHL trade. The Canucks did one last year where the Rangers got a player on an NHL contract and Vancouver got a player on an AHL contract. However, since that player didn't have a NHL contract, it was two trades, both for 'future considerations'.

Does this take into account expected cap increase? The NHL's hockey related revenue was over $6 billion last year and expected to be $6.2 billion this season. The salary cap should be close to $100 million, except according to the CBA it can't grow by more than 5% per year. It's going to grow at the max every year for the next four years, just to catch up to where it should be now. If the cap does hit $100 million before this contract ends, then its value will rise with inflation.
