My best Guess

Dude just stop, we get it. You're a Hab hater. The PLD shenanigans on here from Hab fans must have bothered you on some personal level or something. You kept calling Monahan a "4th line center on the Jets" for months, then got eerily quiet once WPG gave MTL their 1st rd pick for him, which looks to be a bargain at this point.
Barron most certainly has top 4 written all over him. He already has that skill offensively, and just needs to continue improving on his defensive game. Saying both COL and MTL gave up on him is just wrong, even Sakic said he didn't want to trade Barron when he acquired Lehkonen and continued by saying (I'm paraphrasing) you have to give quality to get quality. Habs simply have better prospects with higher all-around potential that makes Barron expendable.
As for this trade, MTL would be the ones refusing, they have too many bottom 6 forwards already, adding Kupari does nothing for them, and although MTLs 2nd is a nice asset, MTL have zero need to be adding more draft picks, unless they plan to flip it. but at that point, MTL could just use Barron to include in a package deal for what they are looking for.

Call me crazy but I'd rather see him and Reinbacher in Laval next year. If they trade one of Harris or Struble then I think they're planning for Hutson in the NHL but otherwise I would give him another year

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Caniac2000</b></div><div>Necas would be a significant upgrade to what is already on the wings in Montreal, I don't think that's questionable. But there isn't a fit here. The 2 guys Carolina would have major interest in are Suzuki and Caufield, and even then Caufield on his own is a downgrade from Necas.</div></div>
I love that we are arguing the same points on two different posts ahaha.
Again - I strongly disagree on Caufield (23yo) being a downgrade as he has better projected points (64 pts/82g v.s 58pts/82g) than Necas (25yo) while playing on a TERRIBLE team and coming back from major shoulder surgery. Also, Slaf, at 19, is projected 12 pts behind Necas... even after the terrible start where he got 10 pts in 34 games. So I would dial it back a little bit on that front.

Necas
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Caniac2000</b></div><div>The 5th overall pick makes this a little more interesting... ultimately, I still think the Canes pass because this is a draft ripe with defensemen and the Canes don't like taking D men in round one. Wrong year. It's more likely that the Canes would move Necas for another top 6 forward, so probably Caufield. Either that, or there would need to be very uncomfortable conversations around Slafkovsky</div></div>
I doubt KH will trade a chance for Catton/Lindstrom/Demidov for Necas... Habs are rebuilding and not in a win-now mode.
Necas would be fun to acquire for the habs, but the Canes are not a good trading partners because the only thing the habs are willing to trade are overpaid vets, LHD and future... which is of no interest for the Canes.
We can't trade for Necas by sending one of our top 6 guys... then it's only a latteral move that serves no purpose.

Hurricanes Trade Necas
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Caniac2000</b></div><div>Except the position of need would be scoring wingers. Montreal don't have anybody on the wing as good as Necas, Caufield included. There isn't a one-for-one trade here. Maybe there's a world where Carolina may listen to Necas, 1st, Morrow + for Suzuki and something like Justin Barron, but there's no world where a one-for-one trade makes sense here for me. It would need to be Caufield + or a larger deal for a bigger piece. That doesn't just apply to Montreal, by the way. If this was Vancouver, Necas + for something like EP40 which the Canes tried before the deadline.</div></div>
And MTL's need are top 6 wingers... conclusion : Canes and habs are not great trading partners right now. And that's okay.
We have a surplus of Dmans and picks. We have a GREAT need for top 6 talent... and it is absolutely dumb to trade a top 6 players for another. Its a laterral move at best.
Altough considering you have to resign more than half your Dcore next season... I'm sure one of our Dman could be of interest.
<strong>BTW </strong>- Caufield (23yo) has better projected points (64 pts/82g v.s 58pts/82g) as Necas (25yo) while playing on a TERRIBLE team and coming back from major shoulder surgery. Yeah you're probably right. It would make more sense to trade Savard at some point and extend Kovacevic. One way or another there's going to be a bit of a logjam at RHD though, but that's a good problem to have.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>tkecanuck341</b></div><div>There's so much factually wrong with this, it's insane. I can't tell if you're being purposefully disingenuous or not. There are zero examples here of a team giving up a 1st round pick for a sub $4M cap hit.
1. Chicago gave up Teuvo Teräväinen, not Panarin. They also got back a 2nd and a 3rd round pick in the trade.
2. Clarkson was given up by Columbus along with a 1st + 2nd as part of the expansion draft so that Vegas would pick William Karlsson instead of one of their other quality young players. It's disingenuous to suggest that the picks were solely for the dump.
3. Detroit gave up the 20th overall pick (along with a 2nd and Joe Vitale), but they got the 16th overall pick back in the same draft. Again, you're either ignorant of the details or being disingenuous.
4. Grabovski - Like Columbus, this was part of the expansion draft and not just a cap dump.
5. Ladd - Winnipeg got a 1st round pick BACK for Ladd when they traded him to Chicago. They didn't pay a 1st. The Islanders later signed him as a UFA and traded his contract as a cap dump for a 2nd and a 3rd.
6. Marleau - Had a $6.25M cap hit on a 35+ contract with a NMC. There was no AHL cap relief waiting for him. Significantly more than Petersen's.
7. Monahan - Had a $6.375M cap hit. They could have buried him, but still his cap hit would have been in excess of $5M.
Funny you bring up Andrew Ladd, because his dump from the Islanders to Arizona is probably the most relevant here, and it only cost them a 2nd and a 3rd round pick. That's a reasonable comparable to dump Petersen's contract.</div></div>
Wait Wait Wait ..... Your argument is the Expansion Teams VGK didnt actively offer to take Capdumps for pay?
There's nothing Disingenuous about that eh buddy ?
Yet you still didnt list examples proving your statement which was what you were required to do to prove your point.
Your stance is to argue Conjecture rather then prove your point.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>tkecanuck341</b></div><div>Since when does a sub $4M cap hit cost a 1st round pick to dump?</div></div>
Straight up capdumps with no cap coming back ?
-Bickell CHI gave up Panarin on a ELC
-Clarkson TML gave up a 1st and a 2nd round pick
-Datsyuk DET gave up a top 20 pick dump his cap
-Grabovski NYI gave up a 1st and 2nd round pick with Bischoff on ELC
-Ladd WPG paid a 1st and 2nd round pick with Dano on ELC
-Marleau TML gave up a 1st round pick to dump his cap
-Monahan CGY gave up a 1st round pick to dump his cap
The alternative is giving away players like VGK did with Reigning Vezina winner at the time MAF or with Pacioretty to CAR.
TBL downgraded from Mcdonugh to Myers to as they had not picks to pay to move him out at the time but needed cap cleared.
I can sight more Examples of this happening then Cal Peterson 2 year 5m contracts being taken on for a 1st round pick alone .
Those are just the one's i remembered and looked up the details on here to prove a point.
Given time i can find more im sure
But there's a reason why teams eat Shi* on bad contracts rather then move them out 9/10
MTL did it with Alzner cause the cost to dump him was too much

Canes get Marner
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Cabbie91</b></div><div>Can I ask why?</div></div>
sure. Canes are built on depth and we are looking to add to the core of this team over the long run than subtracting from the core to add.
The one thing that canes have been seeking for 2 seasons is a power forward. Marner doesnt fit that. We would have traded a young roster forward by all accounts for Tkachuk or Meier but we would have had both for less AAV for 8 years.
Marner's control dies in 2 years. Not only does he hurt the depth with trading to roster players, his cap hit and contract length with do that as well.
Marner is a fantastic talent but we would get longer control and for cheaper with Necas at this point. Lilj would be a nice piece. Im not sure he is worth all of those pieces when Marner walks in 2 years.

Look, I would highly consider it.
Extra cap space, better on defence, 70 point player in Necas AND a first in the deepest draft in years?
For
100 point, 11 million winger, possible top 4 defence man in Lilly
Hard to argue.

That's just my opinion though, and obviously I don't know the team dynamics all that well.</div></div>
See <a href="/users/Cabbie91" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">@Cabbie91</a>'s construction at https://www.capfriendly.com/armchair-gm/team/4155797 and imagine our team without Adam Henrique on it. I think that you'll find it instructive. And if Rico wants to re-up for a couple of seasons after his contract expires, I think that we might like to keep him on.

That doesn't warrant a 1st round pick in the best draft in a decade and a top defensive prospect.</div></div>
Yes it does. And that isn't his cap hit. His cap hit is $5M for next season and the season after, with an actual salary owed of $11M over those two seasons, and thats without even considering his cap hit and salary for the rest of the current season. That is a cap dump worthy of AT LEAST a 1st round pick, if not more.
