A Red Wings Story
Sexy.
But I don't think Detroit needs a D and a pick.
Organizationally, they lack C depth, for any serious replacement for him at 1C level.
So, I wouldn't see him moving out, unless there is something else going on to get that 1C, like flipping that 1st pick.
Because as you so sexily said, that 1st pick would be 32nd OA.
Detroit finally rid themselves of the bad contracts and are on the upswing, losing Larkin without an immediate replacement would be a step backwards.

What fans think is usually nonsensical.
Arizona in a rebuild would stockpile as many picks as possible, you never know when that 6th round pick turns into something, so, in reality no GM would trade that for two goons who can't skate, when they can sign Chiasson and Eakin if they want two goons who can't skate and that "hey you never know 6th rounder"

Severson is so good, the NHL will let him play for 2 teams simultaneously.

I think the value is there for both teams, and both address glaring weaknesses 2C for Colorado and RD and a controlled forward for Vancouver
But I can't see Colorado doing it, simply because Horvats raise would price him out of Colorado, and hes a UFA so they have no control.

Not a cap dump, but definitely not Dan Boyle either.
I think he gets a late 1st and B-Level prospect.
Another thing to factor, how many offensive D will be available at the TDL, Gostisbhere, Klingberg, Shattenkirk, and maybe Dumba (depending where the Wild are)
Ghost is almost a true comp as a rental as Severson, would you trade any of that above for Ghost? probably not.
Remember, Severson's projected WAR % is 59.... 62% EV defence, he's not some stud.

Thread:
Damon Severson Trade Comps
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>NHLfan10506</b></div><div>These are comps. Not asking prices. (It says it there in the title). They are intended to give a range of prices that could mimic a market. In other words, these are not the answer to “what do we need to pay” but are more an answer to “what could other teams be paying”. Comps. Like when you buy a house.
So for instance, if you are the GM of a team in need of a player like Severson, and you want to know what a competitive bid would look like, you’d want your AGM to assemble a list of comps. It doesn’t mean all those teams are bidding. And since players aren’t really sold via auction, there is no market information about bid vs ask prices. So your AGM makes up a list like this. And if it’s accurate, you’d have a rough idea of what type of offers Tom Fitzgerald is receiving from your competition. Some good, some bad.
Does that make sense?</div></div>
These are not comps, like buying a house, you're comparing a basement condo on skid row to prime San Fran real estate.
Guhle and Matheson > Wishart and Carle
Zaitsev and Bernad-Docker > Moore and Vaakanainen
Your 1st rd picks are coming from teams that would be significantly worse than the respective picks in the comps, so not factoring in that automatic jump of 5-10 spots in the first round is an oversight.
Then there's the comparing of Severson, a one dimensional RD to Boyle, Campbell, Faulk, and Lindholm, all who bring so much more than offense from the right side.

Bunting signs for 8 years
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>dannibalcorpse</b></div><div>That last part is what sticks with me - I get that he loves the Leafs, but being 27, this is his one shot at a big long-term deal, and it would be silly for him to not try and maximize his earnings when this is his only shot at it.
Could I see him giving a hometown discount to the Leafs through the 8th year? Sure, I think the likelihood of him getting a big second deal is only slightly more likely at 34 than 35, so he probably weighs that into it. But I'd argue he could easily match the Zach Hyman deal in UFA (7x$5.5M) so Toronto has to get close to that total compensation over the 8 years - so it'd be 8x$4.75M for the Leafs instead.</div></div>
Exactly, if his market value is 7 x $5.5 at $38.5 total, he can hometown it over 8 years at $4.8 to help stretch the cap and help the team.
But as these other posts are saying, he'll leave $10M on the table because he likes Toronto.... that's hard to swallow... Imagine what his wife would say, the security of his kids future... leafs bias needs to be put aside when we're talking real life.

The whole nature of an ACGM is a hypothetical, I can hypothetically find some teams, and you can hypothetically disagree, so no point beating a dead horse.
The other part is, I don't care what a fan base thinks, it's what a GM thinks that matters.
Historically GM's have made some very questionable moves, in the desperation to take the next step in the playoffs, or to save their own jobs.
Washington traded a 1st round pick in 2013 for a 31 year old Erat, who had 21 points in 36 games, Drouin had 20 in 34 last year.... not saying Drouin is worth a 1st, but GM's do stupid things come TDL time.

Stop bringing up Hoffman, I've never even suggested it, nor has the OP.
You're the one bringing him up, stay on topic dude.
Drouin had 1 playoff run with Montreal (they've only made the playoffs twice since he's been with the team), 7 points in 10 games, probably says more for how bad Montreal has been, and how Price covered that up.
Again, as I've referred to, his mental game is a risk, the question is, will a team take that risk, I think so, because right now in the west you have Colorado-Edmonton-Calgary running the show, the remaining 5 playoff teams can use all the help they can get.
The east is running with Tampa, Carolina and Florida....
So, would a Minnesota be willing to take that chance? the Rangers? Pittsburgh?.... I don't know, but I think those teams will be buyers, and sellers markets almost always incite an over payment or people taking risks to try to put themselves over the top, some work out, some don't.

Engvall odd man out
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MatthewsFan</b></div><div>Do yourself a favor and at least look at things before you type.
BOS currently has waived Mike Rielly (3,000,000), Nick Foligno (3,800,000) and Chris Wagner (1,350,000) in the minors (thats a little over 8mil in salary just sitting in the minors lol) I can only imagine what you'd be saying if Kyle Dubas had that much salary buried in the minors.
They just signed Stralman for 1 year a 1mil. So now once Marchard and McAvoy are healthy will still need to waive another player and have a 22 man roster.
And yes, TBL is taking advantage of having Seabrook on LTIR.
It is absolutely less than ideal to have 21 man roster (which the Leafs can have starting Thursday) and a roster decision will have to be made once Liljgren is healthy, but again, this is not just a Leafs issue. lol</div></div>
who cares what Boston waived, I don't care about billionaires money being spent.
Boston: They have a 20 man roster, at 400k under the cap... which includes Marchand and McAvoy.... so when they are back, they have a 22 man roster WITH buried penalties.
Tampa : They have a 20 man roster, right at the cap after LTIR Seabrook, with Cole potentially getting his contract annulled, and Cirelli and Bogosian on IR.... so, when they are back, (assuming Cole too), they have a 22 or 23 man roster below the cap
Toronto: They have a 20 man roster, are $2.1M over the cap, LTIR Lil & Benn bring them under the cap (just barely).... if either of them come back, Toronto has to shed cap hits and move a roster player (Engvall or Kerfoot most likely, giving them room a player and an ELC)....
The fact that you can't see this simple fact that your homerism is showing.
To reiterate Toronto is the only team that cannot ice a 21, 22, or 23 man roster without having to shed a roster player to make room.
No other team has to move someone to play a 21-22-23 man roster.
So, again, for your viewing pleasure, and hopefully you can understand it this time, Yes, it is solely a leafs issue to be this terrible at cap management, Yes they are the only team that has this predicament.

But sure, this is just a Leaf issue lol</div></div>
it is just a leafs issue... Boston and Tampa have both had longer playoff runs than the leafs, so, while they're up against the ceiling, it works.
Toronto, not so much.
Tampa currently has $3M of Cole still on their books, he may have his contract annulled freeing up room, to which, they'll likely call up a player or two (Myers and a forward)
The point is, a 20 man roster isn't ideal.... 2 guys get the flu and you're running an 18 man roster.... one goalie gets sick, and you're running without a backup.
And again, Boston has McAvoy on LTIR, so they can easily call up 1-2 people to fill in, there's no rush for them though, and Marchand coming back when he does puts them up to 21
Toronto doesn't have anyone on IR that is counting against the cap (Cirelli and Marchand), and eventually filling the roster spot.
So, yeah, it's a Leafs issue... as they will be the only team with a 20 man roster for the full season because of horrible cap management.

Goaltending is awful, and Defense is inexperienced.
The former, well, they need to shop the goalie market next offseason if Primeau demonstrates he can't take any legitimate step forward. With only Andersen and Jarry being worthwhile options, they would have to see a trade option.
The latter, it will be good for Guhle, Harris, and Xhekaj to get a chance to play against NHL caliber players, in order to know how to train in the offseason.
Forward core isn't awful, they're 3 lines deep, a bunch of 20 goal scorers, just depends if Slaf can find his scoring touch ala Caufield and Dach living up to his draft expectations.

by your logic Kane and Toews showed they can help a team to tank too, therefore they're really bad right now.
losing your best goalie and your best defenseman, then getting the most man games lost in the NHL made for a perfect storm of garbage last season, so gauging a players capability based on that is ridiculous, and even at that, Dadonov wasn't with Montreal.... and Drouin still put up 20 points in 34 games, a 50 point pace on said dumpster fire team.
Dadonov up until last season, was still a 45 point depth forward, with playmaking ability, and at $2.5M with salary retention is likely a better contract or option than most teams have at that same salary.
Same applies to Drouin (though risk with mental issues are present).
I never mentioned Hoffman, he was a disaster before being signed, demonstrated in Florida that he was one dimensional and needed a team to carry him.
The question isn't "are they first line players" or "are they worth $5M"... the question is "can they make a team better respective to fitting them under a tight cap".... and with salary retention, on Dadonov and Drouin, the answer is most likely a yes, you're almost acting like they're 12 point guys through a regular season, and again, at $2.5M what would you expect, Foegele? Namestnikov? Engvall? Dickinson? arguably all worse at similar cap hits.
Edit: Jfresh war% for Dadonov last season was 77%, with his defence being at a career high.

Monahan cost, because Calgary had to clear his cap to sign Kadri, so, they had to pay to get rid of him, otherwise they would be penalized.
Montreal doesn't need to get rid of these two to be cap compliant, so, there is no reason to sweeten the deal
While I don't think they have 3rd pick values at the moment, with salary retention to help a team out by giving them a roster player that would be likely contributing above their respective $2.5M cap hits, they're likely getting a 5th or 6th now, and if they play well, maybe more at the TDL

Arizona has one of the worst defence in the league and easily the worst goal-tending. I don't think adding a top 6/9 winger is going to push them light years ahead of either team.
On top of that, the NHL has gone out of there way to say if teams are intentionally tanking, they will be fined and stripped of their picks. I don't think Arizona would want to lose out on ANOTHER first round pick. However I do understand your side, Arizona could simply just say no, we don't want him and that's the end of that</div></div>
All a matter of time, if Chicago offloads Toews and Kane they have scraps left, and don't underestimate the tandem of Mrazek and Stalock, Chicago is pretty awful.

I'm not going to pretend to know all the in's and out's of Harris's game, but when most of the trade posts here have him on the outs, or as a #6/#7D man on a team that's going to be a bottom-feeder for the year, there isn't a ton of confidence inspired in the player.
Could I see something like this for a Spence? Maybe... but you went straight for a player who impacted a 1st power play and who you yourself have placed directly on your top pairing. You're going to need to give more than you want for a player like that.
Was I a bit sarcastic? Sure. But, in all seriousness (no snark, no snideness), the response to Montreal if they came calling for Durzi would absolutely be Guhle. He much more fits what the Kings have directly stated they want -- a LD with size that can skate and move the puck. Harris does not check all of those boxes. Guhle does. That would be LA's viewpoint on a call about Durzi.</div></div>
As much as I agree with you that Durzi will have many suitors especially for LA's need of a LD, I can't see Montreal moving Guhle, kid is future captain material in Montreal and basically just outplayed all defenseman to earn a spot with the big club.
