<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Juice</b></div><div>Well...that's an opinion...not exactly cold hard truth...but I can play along too..

The best you will get for Pesce is Kapanen and a 3rd

The reality is that the Leafs' current team defence is top 10 in the league. It's certainly an area we can improve...but we'll be making the playoffs for a 3rd straight year with this group. Does Pesce help round out the d-core and give us a better shot to advance a round or 2? Sure...certainly possible.

But the canes have a new owner who will be itching for some playoff action of his own....it's abundantly clear the most glaring need is scoring as you sit 23rd in the league...yet are just 3 points out of a wildcard spot.

I just posted this in another thread...but Pesce isn't an elite RHD man....he's more in the 3rd rung of RH d-men.

Elite: The top pairing guys that play 20min, shut down the opposition top lines and put up 60+ pts (karlsson, burns, doughty)

Tier 2: Is a mix between 50+ pt guys that are puck movers and 40+ pt guys that are shut-down d-men

Tier 3: is a similar mix between 40+ pt puck movers and straight up shut-down dmen that don't generate much offence...that's where Pesce falls, IMO

That's not to be meant as a criticism of him....he's one of the best defensive d-men in the league, IMO....but someone that only puts up 20pts a year shouldn't command as big a haul as the guys in the tiers above.

Kapanen is no elite top line winger himself and probably sits in a 3rd tier amongst his peers too...

so for me...I see two similar guys providing similar levels of play to a team that is very deep at the same position. Leafs add a bit to make up for winger vs d-man discrepancy...but not a whole lot, IMO</div></div>

Based on your argument I’d have to choose Pesce, over Kap and a pick, because it doesn’t move the needle enough for us. As you’ve stated he is an elite shutdown guy and for us and that is far more valuable the a 40-pt scorer. This may not be the same for other teams but for us he’s second to Slavin. Now Faulk would be a better fit but you’re not as motivated to make that trade for Kap and that’s why there hasn’t been one to this point. Both sides have to see value in the deal. This is something that may have to be revisited in the offseason because I’m not convinced that Willy won’t get moved to relieve pressure. If so, there more be more flexibility to make something happen. #WeCanandWeWill
