I don't think that it's underrated... it's just hard sometimes to tell when the defensive system stops and the goaltending begins in terms of contribution to team success

As far as who plays on D is concerned, Hanifin-Pietrangelo and McNabb-Theodore are locked in as the top 2 pairs and I could see any of Martinez, Hague, Whitecloud, and Hutton utilized for the third pair.
Forward lines are a mess after the first line. Stephenson probably draws second line with whoever they want between him and Hertl playing center. Third line being Mantha-Karlsson-Amadio and fourth being Carrier-Roy-Kolesar. This all of course assumes full health

Buffalo are only couple pieces away from being a threat
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Canucks33</b></div><div>Is a new coach not the first thing Buffalo should be looking for?</div></div>
Honestly, I think Granato is a good coach, but I think the issue is the assistants and the roster. There are too many friends of the coach and GM on the staff and as result, there’s a lack of experience behind the bench.
The team rallied back into the playoff race behind their coach, they certainly haven’t quit on him, and I think he’s done what he can we what he was given. The star players on this team that are well paid have just not been executing, it’s a down year for several guys from a shooting standpoint, and now although we added to the D and solidified it, we now are in dire need of a third line center,
But the bigger issue is the GM. Granato has to coach the team that he was given, and the biggest mistake of the offseason was Adams doing to little to nothing to add to they roster when it needed help, especially when Jack Quinn went down.
Not to mention, the owner won’t do it. The biggest problem of all is the owner.
If they fire Don Granato, they’ll end up with Seth Appert as coach. Thats the Terry Pegula way, because he doesn’t want to pay multiple coaches to not coach.

I got a lot of personal bias here, but Colton Sissons totally deserves to be on a list like this. He’s been the Preds most trusted defensive C for years and a face off ace. I don’t remember exactly what Laviolette said during the Stanley cup run in 2017, but it was to this effect: “I got a guy I can always trust to take those defensive zone draws in late game situations. It’s Colton Sissons.” He’s always just been a solid presence. There’s a reason all Lavi, Hynes, and Bruno have loved him.
But this is a great list, but I think there’s something to be said for adding PP specialists to this list. The ability to consistently help your team cash out on the PP can’t be understated

I'd say 1st for Monahan is an overpayment as well. He's worth a 2nd at the absolute max. The ony part that's possibly the right value is Kovacevic for a 3rd.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Big_Rock_Brock</b></div><div>basing it off the report Kuzmenko is being shopped, you free up the cap for next year and get 2 young pieces who are NHL ready. They aint superstars but you get cap space and nhlers</div></div>
Teams are calling. He's not being shopped. Plus the team isn't looking to next year. They already have Myers, and other pieces, coming off the books so cap is fine.
My problem with Walhlstrom is he isn't going to makeup where Kuz is lacking, despite his size, and lose production offensively in top of it.
Bolduc and Walhlstrom just aren't exciting and do nothing for the team now.
Bolduc has zero chance of playing in Van despite being potentially ready with Hughes, Cole, Z and Soucy all ahead on the left. Along with other prospects coming up.
This might be a better package elsewhere. Value isn't necessarily bad but not good for Van for what the pieces are.

Next Up Buch
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Canucks33</b></div><div>Taking on the Garland contract is a fair point and requires some value attached to it besides STL hypothetically liking him as a player. But also consider that
a) Buch has a M-NTC (could angle his way to 2-4 particular teams)
b) Most teams that would be interested in Buch do not have cap space (this was listed as a major reason why we got Zadorov for cheap despite CGY not wanting to move him to us)
c) Other interested teams may not have prospects as good as Lekkerimaki or a contract they can easily move to make cap space.
The thing with Willander and Bruscewitz is that they are RHD, which is a premium asset and the kind that never gets moved. Every team in the league that offered a valuable piece to NYR in the last 2-3 years has asked for Schneider (including us with Miller probably) and it hasn't happened, young RHD just don't get moved. Consider further that RHD is an area of need for VAN and we have barely had any in the system at all over the last number of years, let alone prospects as good as those guys look right now. I don't think they can be compared to the Makmahdullin or Ohkotiuk (especially cause SJS clearly went for quantity over quality in that specific deal). I understand Buch is a premier asset and you have to ask high, but in reality VAN isn't including one of those guys let alone both.
I think Garland + Lekkerimaki + 1st 2024 for Buch is at least a solid framework for a deal with the understanding that the market will dictate if anything else needs to be added.</div></div>
While I mostly agree with you. RHD wasn’t the focal point but however is the focal point of your prospect group. We are just so stocked at forward prospects that it shouldn’t be a priority. Kyrou and Thomas are signed for 8. Schenn for 4-5. Neighbors looks great so far. Then we have Dvorsky, Snuggerud, Bolduc, Stenberg and Dean who are likely to become NHLers.
It’s a good fit but a bad fit if premiums are being thrown on.

I understand that there's no reason to move Buch and you'd be happy to keep him. But what are the odds that a) Buch wants to re-sign in STL and b) STL wants to commit big money and term to a 30 year old winger?</div></div>
Not sure. But in all reality that’s a very similar return that I asked for that Timo Meier got as an expiring RFA with a 10m QO. You’re asking for an 1st liner at half of a normal 1st liners cap hit all while having us take on additional year on the Garland contract which is an ok contract but certainly does nothing to help us reach our goals.
Hell what you proposed is much worse than Horvat just netted you guys as an expiring UFA.
Baseline for my thinking was
Willander > Mukmahdullin
Woo/Brusc = Ohkotiuk
Johnsson was a one year cap dump not 3
And there’s no Zetterlund

I think Buch would be happy to come back to St. Louis but I agree I'm not sure the Blues want to go long term with him as he doesn't really fit our window for contention.
I think realistically if the trade is with Vancouver, the Blues will want Lekkerimaki or Willander coming back. Now if either of those 2 are in the package I don't think it's going to be a TON else like listed above but still if the Blues decide to trade Buch there will be a bidding war for him and the Blues will likely get a ton. So a teams top prospects have to be on the table in a serious discussion.
