one would assume that none of these contracts were signed in a vaccum, that the status of the player on signing varies and often for players signing as free agents, they are paid with a significant focus on past performance rather than expected production. a good majority of players you've listed are in this category since their production and over play as dramatically fallen off since they've signed their respective contracts, but tavares in a bad year was almost point per game. he's clearly a cut above the rest of these guys.

My rebuttal to that is the bigger they are, the harder they fall. Say Tavares was the highest paid player and produced like the 50th best player based solely on PPG. That difference is over 5m. The difference between the 50th highest paid player and 100th is 1.5m. From a standpoint of being overpaid, Tavares is one of the largest wastes of money in the league with him being overpaid 3.75m. Every single player you mentioned before Tavares is objectively not as good of a hockey player and are on objectively overpaid contracts. None of them are costing their team damn near 4 million to keep them around. I am also accounting for the fact that Tavares has 3 more years of that which costs the team assuming he continues to play like that 11 million. To compare I’ll use kotkaniemi. KK will continue to improve as he will be playing in an elevated role with another year of development so I don’t see his cap hit to be as bad as it is on paper. On paper though, KK is the 135th highest paid forward and the 198th most effective forward. The 198th highest paid forward makes 2m less however. Now on paper it’s a 16 million dollar mishap but the fact that they pay it over the course of a much longer period of time where he will still be improving makes it much better that it actually seems. Every forward that gets a raise over 4.82m continues to make it a better deal. Not many forwards are signed over 11m, 3 to be exact. I don’t see 42 players signing over 11 million dollar deals in the next 3 years. I do however see 63 forwards signing over 4.82 million dollar deals over the next 8 years. That’s 8 forwards getting a pay raise over 4.82 per offseason, and that is assuming KK plays like he did in his fourth line role. It all comes down to the bigger they are, the harder they fall. Even tho Tavares slips from 4 to 45, he loses his team 3.75m a year despite the fact he is near PPG. That’s why I view his contract as so bad, because it will cost the leafs millions and they are already struggling to build a team around their core 4.

Your point? That’s one source. Many have the canes higher than that and many have the leafs lower than that. Average leafs position I have seen is late teens early 20s and the average canes position is between 6-10. That has nothing to do with my argument tho. The leafs simply do not have the top end talent leafs fans make the out to having. If Amirov was healthy I say they have a true top end guy but he isn’t so because of that the leafs have a bunch of good prospects but not great. Top 6 potential or top 4 potential but never top line or top 2

He is paid 8 mil for the next 3 years. Sure it’s not all by one team but being paid 8 mil till you’re 40 is kinda not good

Mikheyev is a fun player to watch but ineffective in the playoffs when it counts......unless you love the 2 open net goals he scored.......Massive over-payment by the Canucks.

Spezza is a great hockey player but not suited to play on a 4th line energy line and needed to retire as he too was relatively ineffective in the playoffs.........Simmonds best days are behind him and he is going to be an extra this year.

So.....yes regardless what you think......The Leafs bottom 6 is going to be much better than last year.</div></div>

Leafs didn’t let him walk. They offered him a contract and the hurricanes offered him the same contract and he signed in carolina. Culture problem in Toronto? Anyways no the leafs bottom 6 is not better. Assuming kerfoot is good as gone then you have massive holes that other teams will exploit like they did last year

It costs the leafs 145k for every Tavares point. It costs the caps 105k for every Ovi point. Tavares is the 4th highest paid forward in the league and the 45th ranked forward in PPG. Only one player above him is on an ELC. Tavares is good player don’t get me wrong but he heavily underperforms what he is being paid. If Tavares was paid like the 45th highest paid forward he would be paid 7.25m or 3.75m less than what he is currently being paid. Jonathan toews is the only other one who I would suggest for this team who is paid over 10m and is a forward. That’s literally only one other player who is paid over 10m who is worse than Tavares. Leafs never should have signed that contract. Could actually be contenders without him.
