Also like most people you are overpaying Johnsson. He is 24 years old and a career total of 22 goals. Hes a 3rd line player right now on any playoff worthy team</div></div>
You're right when you say he isn't ready but that you said he regressed shows you didn't actually watch any Marlies games. Lilijigren took a big step forward in terms of his defensive game he was given much tougher assignments and heavier defensive zone deployment this season and still posted similar (well actually better when you look at the post season) offensive numbers

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>I think you proved my point. You're no where near cap compliant even after getting rid of Zaitsev and Brown. Bigger pieces have to go. The RFA market is really unpredictable thanks to the Leafs. Nylander after two 20 goal 40 assists seasons gets 7m a year. Kapanen with similar number projected for this season more goals fewer assists, what is his value.?</div></div>
In a year where offense has spiked league wide and with nowhere near the track record or ceiling that Nylander had at the time of his negotiations? Considerably lower if he wants to go long term.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>If it's big money that has to be moved if Marleau remains a Leaf. I don't know why so many reluctant are trade the a big money contract like Nylander or Kadri. Picking around the edges with guys like Brown doesn't do it. And hoping Kapaen and Johnsson take below market value......that's a hope.</div></div>
This is completely backwards. The edges are exactly where you cut, not with your best players. If you can get by with moving just Brown (who is unlikely to see anything more than 4th line minutes) that's what you do. In what world is 3.75M for a guy who at most by season's end will have 84 games played and who is unlikely to hit 50 points below market value? Like I said go to arbitration with Johnsson and you'll probably keep his salary around $2M for a season. As for Kapanen 2.8M on a 1 or 2 year deal is pretty close if not then use one them to add on D.

This is unfinished. It wasn't meant to be a set roster but just to show how they could fit everyone in.
Give Johnsson a 2 year bridge or go to Arbitration with him to free up another $1.5-2M in cap space, like I said this is likely on the high end of what Marner would receive and on the low end of the expected cap ceiling. You can bet that Brown isn't going to be on the team next year cause they won't want to put 2.1M on the 4th line and they'll need to move money to hang on to Kapanen and Johnsson. its a 1 year squeeze because of the Marleau contract.

But they didn't give up 2 2nds... they gave up a 2nd and a 3rd. It only becomes 2 2nds if they make the cup final (which is very possible) or they re-sign Nyquist (which is unlikely given their cap constraints). It's a great move for SJ and just further proof that we the public generally over value the forward rental markets (or more so the winger market) outside of the elite rentals you generally don't see them garner a 1st round pick.

That, and the chances of Duchene staying in Nashville are astronomically higher than Panarin staying.</div></div>
If you truly believe they are near identical in value then there's no point in continuing this.

Doesn't mean they should overpay for a C when a superstar winger who plays very much like C (sort of like Kucherov) could be had for the same price.

Meh... I don't think Ottawa should accept the Dzingle trade. Ritchie is a dime a dozen type of 4th liner that you can find for relatively cheap every year so it's really just a 2nd round pick for Dzingle which I think is too light a return.
Asking for the wrong young players/prospects from Boston. You should be asking for Donato and Studnicka and forgetting about the filler 2nd and 3rd round picks there.
Any trade involving Winnipeg "prospects" for higher end rentals should start with Sami Niku coming from Winnipeg's end.

No they shouldn't be, Panarin is a top 10 NHL forward (and in some people's opinion top 5). Duchene is not in the top 32. Stone is far more comparable in value to Panarin (though still a bit behind but still easily in the top 20).
As of right now neither Ottawa or Columbus are letting other teams talk with Panarin or Duchene and their reps so you can include a conditional pick incase of an extension but to say he's being traded with an extension in place is untrue.

Getting The Leafs Out Of Cap Hell
Just wanted to let you know that the buyout can't happen. The buyout window is from 48 hours after the end of the playoffs until June 30th. Outside of that window the Canucks would have to have an arbitration case awarded to a player that would put them over the cap ceiling and would be allowed to another buyout immediately following the arb hearing since Marleau buyout makes no difference in cap hit because it's 35+ contract (his cap hit would remain the same) Marleau would be ineligible.
So to sum up
Any trade involving Marleau with the intent of a buyout would have to be made prior to June 30th and would mean that any team looking to do this would have to be ok with paying him his bonus money.
