Possible view of the leafs looking into the next season
Hawks easily decline. Timmons is waiver wire material and Jarnkrok is of no use to Chicago. Crevier is a big body RHD who is getting heavy minutes in the AHL and looked like a 3rd liner in the call up this year which they will need on the RHD once Murphy is gone and Rinzel is called up in two years.

Why a NMC makes a move difficult
HUGE overpay for 1 year of Marner for a rebuilding team to give up which is why the Hawks say no. The ONLY reason Chicago considers Marner is if the price they pay now, is a fair amount less than what they receive at the TDL with 50% retained. A 1st and Murphy and Chicago would need to get back at least (2) 1sts at the TDL for it to make sense. Otherwise, Chicago waits until Marner is a free agent to consider and gives up nothing.

He had a down year and I wouldn't be surprised if he had a jump in points next season at all. He gets a 2nd minimum in return based solely on the impact and presence that he brings to teams with decent numbers too (for his contract it's definitely below what he should be putting up, but the points he does get plus his impact/presence gives you at least a 2nd round pick)</div></div>
:laugh wrong, not a chance any team wants to deal with a $11M cap hit for 65 points or even 80 points (the season before this one)....he's not worth it! Cap hits matter and nobody is giving the Leafs a 2nd round pick...way better ways to spend $11M worth of cap space and get 65points....same reason the Leafs would move him in a heartbeat for even a 5th round pick if they could.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Michaeli13</b></div><div>That's where you are wrong. People would 100% give up assets for JT. Now the price I set may be a tad high but he would draw in at least a 2nd to a team that is doing well with the cap. He's only got 1 year left and he provides a significant amount of experience to a team that desperately needs a star veteran for their youth.
It's not about "bailing us out" the Leafs could easily keep him and his contract and be perfectly fine. While I do believe that Chicago could resign him due to their good market and upcoming team it would be unfair to assume a trade with the assumption that he resigns in free agency or before. The trade is based on his value and what he brings...</div></div>
No, that's where YOU are wrong. JT is not worth $11m.....that's plain and simple full stop period. 25 goals and 65 points does not justify a $11M cap hit, nor do many teams have $11M to spend against the cap. Nobody is giving the Leafs a 2nd round pick for 65 points at a $11M cap hit. Nobody is paying for that

LMAO, nobody is giving up anything for JT at $11M...not happening. Nobody is going to bail the Leafs out of cap problems for free either.
You seem to be one of these fans who think the Leafs will get value because the acquiring team "can" sign him longer term...that's not how it works. The Leafs can trade JT for only what they own of him and that's 1 year and $11M which means he's not worth anything.

It's not $5M LMAO. Seth Jones at $4.5M would be one of the best contracts in the league and every team would want him. Not to mention, on the Leafs he would automatically be the #1 or #2 D guy on the team...Reilly? Nice way to loose the game in overtime Mr. Cluth Reilly. You are lost buddy
Judging by the Leafs roster the last 8 years, the core 4 are all overpaid and yet Marner will get them by the balls again when he negotiates his new agreement. Which is why the Hawks shouldn't want anything to do with him other than to retain half next winter and you use him as trade since the Hawks have cap flexibility.

Forget Tanev if the hawks are looking at RHD and paying $6M to $7M and go after Matt Roy on a short term deal. Move Murphy for Marner + a late 1st instead; maybe throw in Raddysh rights or one of the LHD prospects.

Not a Leafs Fan but this is what will happen
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>SNipeSHowInc</b></div><div>They’d sooner use that first round pick to gain an asset than to get rid of one. They aren’t in massive cap trouble so no need to get rid of tavares for 1 year. If he wasn’t a 70 point player I’d say maybe get rid of him, but he is a 70 point player</div></div>
The problem is having cap space to sign at least one big name defensive guy such as Matt Roy, and a bigger name goalie to play with Woll. That's going to take upwards of $10M in cap flexibility which the Leafs currently do not have while still filling in the rest of the top 9 roles up front.

He's still good and can help the youngsters develop into NHLers. If you could talk to him and extend him to a reasonable deal though...big hypothetical because he's never won a cup, but if those hypotheticals occurred...wouldn't he be worth it?</div></div>
That's a different discussion than the Hawks paying assets for him or not being paid to take on his $11M cap hit from Toronto. Regarding extending him, Leafs don't own that value and therefore they wouldn't get any value for a possible extension.
I know you know this but worth mentioning.
Honestly, no I would only be interested in him in the hopes the Hawks can retain half and flip him at the deadline for value. Wait until next summer when he's a UFA if the Hawks want to consider giving him a leadership offer/role.

1 goal in 5 games though, for a goal scorer and the team arguably was better when he wasn't on the ice but Marner was pathetic no doubt
