He wants opportunity to better his career, I don’t see linemates if Carter and puustinen being ideal for his performance. Kapanen should also be resigned. Maybe play rackell on the LW with malkin and having puljujarvi one the RW. Probably the only circumstance he is traded for</div></div>
Rackell-Malkin-Puljujarvi is interesting, though I question the fit a bit since Malkin doesn't shoot much at 5v5 and needs some shooters around him (by that measure, Zucker isn't exactly helping much either). Puljujarvi can really drive play though, which is why I thought he could help Carter.
Regardless, I think this is a good spot for him. Hextall and Burke want size and he's got it. I see a lot of Nichushkin there.
Not sure what to do with Kapanen though. He was horrible last year and likely will cost little to sign.

Petry is far more "two-way" than Matheson, who drives offense but needs to be sheltered defensively. Petry has good defensive metrics.

Tkachuk moves
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>OldHabsFan61</b></div><div>What makes you think the Pens want to move Dumolin? Has your front office shown any signs at all they’re willing to move away from their core guys? He’s been Letang’s partner for how many years now? You think he wants him gone?
Pinto has a real possibility of becoming a second line centre. He’s still on his entry level deal. Ottawa doesn’t need Marino that badly. All Ottawa has to do is dump Zaitsev and move up JBD. The idea of trading Tkachuk is a worthy one for Calgary to explore, but that’s just not a good offer.</div></div>
It's been reported that they are trying to move a LD (but the preference is Pettersson, though they are listening on Dumoulin). It's also been reported for like a year that they would be willing to move Marino. So yeah, don't act like moving Dumoulin is some crazy thing especially with the fact that he's declining and only has a year left.
I would also point out the return Mark Stone got when he was traded to Vegas. You guys always overvalue prospects and overestimate what it takes to get these guys. Look at the Debrincat trade. Didn't even get a prospect, just one first.

Yeah, I've never heard of Ken Holland overpaying and acquiring aging former Stanley cup-winning top pairing defensemen before. Completely unfathomable and unrealistic!
I could never father a team with a need for a young defensive RHD trading a middle six prospect for one! Unbelievable.
And we have never seen a team trade a star RFA that doesn't want to sign with the team!

Well, it depends on if he actually wants to re-sign there. He's an RFA and the previous negotiation wasn't easy.

Edmonton was stupid enough to pay to take Duncan Keith's contract. Brian Dumoulin is exactly the kind of player Ken Holland loves. If you don't think he would make that kind of move, you don't know Holland.

Aston-Reese being traded certainly did not help the PK or the team's ability to defend at 5v5. Relying on old man Carter for that role is also not ideal.
Carolina might want McGinn back but they were also the team that let him go instead of trying to match the deal he got. Maybe they would want him with salary retention?

He absolutely was better to start last season but it was almost all shooting % stuff. His finishing kinda died out in the second half and he had the worst play driving numbers among the wingers on the team. The PK was also statistically worse (allowed more high danger shots) when he was on it.
Maybe he has higher perceived value around the league and someone actually wants him. But I personally would pay to have that cap space freed up.

Analytically, he was pretty bad last year. He also had the turnover and penalty in game 7 OT that lost them the series. I just want him gone lol.

Clearing cap space in the offseason
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>edeangel84</b></div><div>His shooting percentage is higher than Zucker, Kapanen, Blueger, Boyle, and even ERod. Why would we get rid of him when he doesn’t even make that much? Zucker is clearly a waste of cap. Kapanen is the next best option to move on from.</div></div>
....why are you citing shooting percentage?
McGinn is a decent finisher shooting above his career average this season. That's what he brings to the fourth line. He also doesn't drive play like a guy like Rodrigues does. When Rodrigues is on the ice, the Penguins generate a lot more scoring chances and allow fewer. The Penguins get significanatly fewer chances to score when McGinn is on the ice.
Look at their isolated impacts.
<img class="for_img" src="https://i.imgur.com/UeHYVIU.png" alt="UeHYVIU.png">
McGinn isn't as great as you think he is.
Zucker is also paid too much, yes. And I explained why he's unlikely to move in the post. He makes so much money that you probably have to attach a pick to him like Vegas tried to with Dadonov.

fringe third maybe? On no team except maybe Arizona is he a top-six player. He just doesn't have that kind of skillset. He's never been that and his stats and underlying numbers do not support that.
How can you watch him play and say he's a second liner? lol
On the Penguins he's a solid fourth liner.

Not to be a fourth liner, no. No fourth-line winger in the league is worth that.
You can like a player and realize he's not worth his cap hit.

No other forward does what he does, which is offer enough skill to play up and down a lineup while also bringing toughness to this team that it lacks from our other forwards.</div></div>
He makes too much money for what he is and O'Connor can do most of those things while offering more speed and skill. If you want to add toughness, do it for league min in free agency. They are getting that toughness from Brian Boyle for a fraction of McGinn's cost.

I kind of think that about him too. Why not give him more opportunity there (other than when a d is in the penalty box)?
But the reality is that Rutherford kinda made a mess out of the situation by getting three LD making $4+ million.

Both are true! He’s been good on the second pairing for most of the season. But he doesn’t play Pk or PP so he’s the guy that came out of the lineup when Friedman was getting more of a look.
Now he’s in the third pairing with Matheson promoted to the top four.
Here’s why

Being a good player and getting less opportunity now is reason for a team to trade him and another team to want him.

Because that’s what rentals go for. You almost never get good value for the player you give up. It’s always a late first, prospect taken in the first round, and roster players or whatever.
Pettersson has actually been good this year and could use a bigger role. Kapanen is a classic reclamation project t.
